One of the things I loved about Frollo is that while a lot of the other villains are motivated by obtaining power (Scar, Ursula, Jafar, etc) Frollo already has power. Instead we’re shown how he abuses it. While Scar is still a great villain, once he becomes king he just kinda lays around and complains. The things Frollo does are far more interesting and and honestly terrifying.

Hard agree with this. Frollo is a villain who technicly "already won". Hes in a position of power, he cleary loves his job, doesnt care if the 'guilty' die, and cleary does whatever he wants while within reason. Hes also cleary human, hes a messed up twisted human who fears the Judgement of God while believing hes Humble and Just (even thou we see plenty of evidence of otherwise, like when he gos to teach Quasi his lessons.) Him lusting after Esmeralda and wanting her, isnt the biggest or most grand goal, but when you consider that hes been a Judge for a long while... you start to wonder if Esmeralda was the only one he lusted after, and was simply the first that was denied to him for a long time.

I kinda have to assume that's just an amazing coincidence because that's only true on the newer prints of the movie starting with the 2014 DVD/Blu-ray and beyond. Still impressive it was that close to the halfway mark originally but I really have to assume it's just a coincidence. On the other hand Minority Report was able to pinpoint how long it was until the end credits start when they say how long until Anderton meets Crowe so it could have been intentional.

Unpopular opinion: I absolutely loved Bellwether before the twist. Her interactions with Judy sounded like she genuinely supported her dream as a cop. Even with Judy and Nick, a predator that Bellwether herself is supposed to have bigoted views towards, go to her for help, she treats BOTH of them friendly and her friendliness was also genuine. How the hell am I supposed to believe this character would be a psychopathic racist when her behavior previously didn't suggest that?
@joshuasgameplays9850Ай бұрын
I *wanna* say the idea was that she herself doesn't really mind predators, and she was just using the public's prejudice as a tool to gain power, but I kinda feel like I'm putting more thought into this than the writers ever did.
@motherplayerАй бұрын
I suppose it doesn't help when you position as the assistant mayor is nothing more than a glorified secretary, you possibly got the role to secure a minority vote (Which, when you consider Judy's position was also used by the mayor to prop himself up as being a result of his "Mammal Inclusion Initiative" act, doesn't sound out of place.) and worse of all, that shoddy coffee mug job, I could see some frustration, not for ALL predators, but some frustration. And yes, I agree. Her support of Judy was unquestionably honest.
@1forge2rulethemall88Ай бұрын
I think the reason for her previous actions and politeness is not meant to suggest a genuine lack of discriminatory motives, rather I think she is mean to be the proverbial "wolf if sheeps clothing" made more literal. Someone who has learned to act one way while secretly feeling and even acting another way when they feel they can let the mask down. Its not that unheard of, but it is not what we normally expect, most people veen villians are somewhat honest with their feelings and emotions, the two facedness of someone who acts friendly and sweet towards people while secretly hating them is uniquely deceptive. Think palpatine as he nearly weeps for democracy and the republic while in private literally cackling about infinite power. If we got more flashbacks from Bellwether in more movies or a tv series the producers likely would have given us more to show the double faced nature but without its like showing palpatine one moment talking about freedom and the next hurling jedi out of windows.
@DetectiveDorianАй бұрын
Personally, I tend to give the antagonists of a mystery story some slack, because the twist is supposed to be the *point.* I'm not saying Bellweather is great, but I understood what they were going for. I probably wouldn't put her super high in my own hypothetical ranking, either, though.

If anything, Hades is kinda the least messed-up god out of the major ones. He's probably a little grumpy about not getting to draw sticks first for his lot since he's the oldest, but he just kinda sticks to himself. Pretty chill and reasonable guy, too, as long as you don't try to mess with his turf. He's also a pretty good husband, and went through the standard traditions before taking Persephone as his bride.
@AtlasBlizzardАй бұрын
Exactly. He's probably the chillest god of them all, ruling over the kingdom of the dead fairly. The only 'bad' thing he did was kidnap Persephone to be his bride, but that was Zeus's doing. Her mother Demeter blamed Zeus, not Hades.
@LloydTheZephyrianАй бұрын
@@AtlasBlizzard Yeah, even then, Hades didn't really do anything all that wrong by ancient Greek standards. All you really had to do was ask the husband "hey, can I marry your daughter?", pass the vibe check, and go grab her to get hitched. If I remember right, Demeter would be the most in the wrong, as (according to my admittedly rusty memory on the topic, so feel free to correct me on this) the mother was never really involved in that choice. Of course, by today's standards, her frustration is understandable (even if her rage was a bit excessive), but it's unfair to judge the past by the present's standards.

Agreed, I love Disney's Hades as a character, it's just a shame that he contributes to the common impression that gods of the underworld are automatically evil and underworld = hell. Still, if I separate Disney Hades from Greek Hades, he's one of my favourite villains ever.
@shtj6761Ай бұрын
Best Hades depiction IMO is from, well, Hades (the game). In that game, he's not evil, just extremely grumpy. He's stuck with an endless amount of paperwork, his wife left him, and his rebellious son keeps going on a rampage through the underworld (that leaves him with more paperwork). Also he thinks all of his extended family are idiots.

Fun fact: When Hades gets angry, his hair fire gets colder
@abdulwasey3506Ай бұрын
Yes, because scientifically, the color blue has a smaller wavelength than red. It means that it takes more energy to create blue light as opposed to red light. However, we have a social association of the color blue with water, which can be cold and red with fire and lava, which are hot. So, yeah, it can cause some confusion.

to add to your whole Bambi MAN rant at 25:00, remember a while back how so many people were trying to pull mental gymnastics with the character of Death from puss in boots: the last wish. Going "oh, he's not a villain, he's just an antagonistic force/cosmic force" despite the fact he takes pleasure in the fear & suffering of the hero, is purposefully going beyond what he's allowed to do in order to kill puss, and is actively, physically fighting to try and murder puss. but Man, who is entirely an unseen presence with no character and only exists through the destructive acts they cause, & who could easily just be a metaphorical placeholder for the general ideas of death/tragedy occurring in life in general? Nope, 100% active villain no debate in any way, shape or form

I think the "force of nature" thing is mostly intended as a comparison to the other two evil factions, the irredeemable Jack Horner and the sympathetic Goldilocks and her bears. Death fits in neither of these categories, he can't be defeated or redeemed because death is inevitable. That being said, the whole reason he goes after Puss to take his last life early is because he felt scorned by him. That's Maleficent levels of pettiness, it's just that the guy who wants to kill the main character over a perceived slight in this movie also just so happens to be an unavoidable force of nature that everyone has to face eventually.
@sideways_chip_eater6420Ай бұрын
This could completely wrong but usually when I hear "force of nature" character it's something that cant be reasoned with and is *almost* unstoppable the best thing you can do is get out of the way, run and hide, or just wait for the inevitable, like a tornado or a hurricane, (Like the Martians from war of the worlds or Minus One Godzilla) Death went after Puss before his time was up literally cheating the laws of nature because he was personally offended by the comments of some random cat laughing about the fact he has 9 lives while he could've just waited for Puss to inevitably get himself killed and loose his final life.

I feel like the Death confusion is understandable, given th emessage of the film. That's not mental gymnastics imo, but i do think he's a villain.

52:11 if anyone is wondering it's because Prince John and the king who returns at the end, King Richard III the Lionheart, are actual historical figures. King Richard left England to go fight in the Third Crusade and his brother Prince John was left in charge in his absence. I won't get into their relationship or how the public views him cause that's a whole mess. But short version is that Robinhood was a preexisting folk hero long before the two of them lived. People loved Richard so much and hated John so much that later versions of the Robinhood tale graft Richard and John to the myth and have Robinhood resisting the evil Prince John and his corrupt henchmen until the true king is able to return home and restore peace and order. That's also why the king just kinda shows up at the end.
@officialmonarchmusicАй бұрын
That still didn’t need to happen. For instance, in the 1938 Robin Hood film, King Richard’s retaking of his kingdom is the subject of the whole climax. But they didn’t even necessarily need to do that. Just have it show up and throw open the castle doors dramatically around the time of the final battle, don’t have him return offscreen

*Fun fact related to Captain Hook and John Silver:* When the animators of Treasure Planet were trying to see if they could pull off making a 3D arm on a 2D character like Silver, they wanted to try it on some pre-existing footage of a character making some hand movements, they thought that the better way to do it was in Hook, since both him and Silver are pirates, so they picked up the scene that Schafrillas shows at 1:17:30 and made his arm 3D and robotic, once they liked the results, they continued with the idea. You can even find that test footage on KZbin!!
