Haha! I am from Michigan and wondered if you've ever visited. It's so beautiful, and honestly, when you are sitting on the beach of Lake Michigan it has a similar gravitas as the ocean. "No salt, no sharks, no worries," as Michiganders like to say. But that is just my very biased opinion;)

In defence of Lake Michigan, the Great Lakes are just unsalted oceans. They’re so big you can’t see the other side and they’re sandy bottomed. They even have small tides! They’re not like a backwater pond that people call lakes in the rest of the world 😂

Just commenting as someone who lives in Chicago, but is from the east coast and has been to many ocean beaches: Lake Michigan beaches are absolutely still beaches!! Lake Michigan isn't just any ordinary lake, it's a great lake, meaning it is so massive that you don't see land on the other side. Are there less waves and salt and more vegetation? Yes. But in the summer, the beach fulfill any criteria you want from a beach adventure. Don't judge the Great Lakes until you've spent time here

Alexis Hall, who wrote A Lady for a Duke has also written my absolutely favorite romance novel of all time, "Glitterland", which was recently published again after being out of print for some time, I believe. It deals with mental health beautifully too.

But as a Michigander who grew up on Lake Superior I was SO CONFUSED about your lake opinion because I've been to the ocean too and thought the beaches have similar vibes. Since you liked "A Lady for a Duke" so much you reeeally should check out the other novels from Alexis Hall. I loved "Boyfriend Material" and "Rosaline Palmer takes the cake" as well as their sequels. I haven't read The Charm Offensive (but am totally going to!) but the way you describe this book it seems kinda similar to the more modern romance novels from Alexis Hall. The romance is well thought out. The characters have chemistry and he delves into mental health and the books manage to be emotional and cute/funny at the same time. Had to cry a lot during reading these but also laughed the whole time. I actually feel like A Lady for A Duke is one of his weaker books and the modern setting suits him more, but it may very well be just my personal taste and despite that I also enjoyed ALfaD. I adored every single one of Alexis Halls books so far.

What If it's Us by Becky Albertalli is so sweet! I listened to the audiobooks and the narrators are actors. In fact, one of the characters has a celebrity crush on one of the real narrator's partner! (could be ex at this point? I'm not sure) and has played the iconic character on Broadway that the book character loves. The narration was just too good I had to look up who these people were! There is a second in the series that I loved as well.

Haha as an aussie, I felt the same way about beach read! It was a little disappointing, especially with the cover being so sunny but it was close enough. Glad you enjoyed the book. I gave it 4 stars but I'm not really a purely romance reader

Bridgerton WISHES it could be as cool as this book, and the rest of the series looks very promising!! the second one was also lovely, but the first remains my favourite so far AND I AM EXCITED for the third!!

It interesting I adore the shit out of romance in books. But I always never really gravitated to actual romance books. I think a part of me is also concerned about a book relying on the romance if that makes sense. Pleaseeee read Bergman brothers series by Chloe Leise!! It has representation on chronic pain, autism and also has queer characters and I think it's well done. And the family is just so wholesome and supportive and all the tropes (grumpyxsunshine, marriage in crisis, marriage of convience, age gap etc) are also sooo well written. It's definitely my favorite series in the romance genre and I think you'll enjoy it too!

some more romance books you might like! : Henry Hamlet's Heart by Wilde if you miss the early 2000s. Heart of Stone by Evans if you want a historical vampire story that just has so much tension and yearning. You might want to try literally anything by K.J. Charles! Personally my favorite, that I find under-appreciated, is Band Sinister it's one of the only books I've re-read multiple times. Since you liked the Charm Offensive, definitely check out Never Ever Getting Back Together by Gonzales! For manga, I'm really liking My Love Mix-Up! It starts out sort of like this very shakespearen comedy set-up, but it's super cute. And if you ever find yourself in a wine-mom mood, try the Bromance Book Club by Adams! I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this series/the first one (these r all HEA/HFN btw:) )
