I like Mary's song because I believed that it was the story of a 90 something year old couple who lived next door to Taylor, and she turned the old woman's own words about how & when she met the love of her life, the children & memories they had, and that they were still together & in love. Like she did with the song Ronan basically,taking Ronan's mother's own words, but used them in the first person. If it is in fact just fictional, made up relationship, it kind of loses some of it's appeal, however the details are so specific, that it makes it sound like she is talking about real people who shared their life story with her. Are you sure the song it is purely fictional?

The thing about Red and State of Grace is that they work so well off of each other. State of Grace is the perfect opening song and it’s her best opening song period although I would also accept Mine and Fearless as contenders for that spot as well. And Red is like the perfect title track. Back to the point I was trying to make, red and state of Grace work so well together because they both introduce the theme of Red as an album in different ways, with different sounds but similar images that flow through out the album as a whole: traffic, autumn, driving etc. I just love those two songs so much. They are perfect songs to me.

Hey, friends! Happy New Year! ❤️ My ranking comes with an entire essay that I wrote, LOL. 🤷‍♀️ To the Content Creator, great list and very comprehensive! I love how we are all drawn to different songs. In college, I set a goal with a friend of mine for each of us to make a list of the “Ten Taylor Songs I’d Save If The Rest Had to Go Away Forever”. 😭 It’s a painful thought for sure and definitely proved to be so for me because I had to “part” with a lot of true favorites, but it was actually a lot of fun to do, in spite of the fact that I procrastinated for like 7 years after we set the goal. 😅 I’m a total Taylor nerd (unapologetically) and I actually started working on this a couple months ago. I’ve been listening to her full catalog a lot lately and on my daily commutes to work I’ve been making and editing my list (and editing again 😅). It’s gone through MANY iterations but I have finally reached a point where I no longer feel like I need to make any adjustments. The choice to put the original albums’ tracks rather than choosing “Taylor’s Versions” was deliberate. I’m very sentimental and I have memories associated with each of her albums, and her voice sounds different in those earlier albums that are especially close to my heart. For me, the fact that her voice sounds more youthful in those earlier albums/tracks is part of their charm, so that’s why I made this choice. I don’t know if you all can relate to this but sometimes I think her music complements her lyrics better than at other times. Like sometimes the good lyrics are a little bit lost to me because of how they are delivered musically via melody and other times the combination of melody and lyrics REALLY pack a punch. That was one of the guiding considerations for my list. I actually got carried away, so I even narrowed down my top 5! 😳. After I finished I decided to rank my top three albums. For background I am a 30-year-old woman (she/her pronouns), so that might account for why I lean in favor of the earlier albums. Themes that I tend to gravitate to when choosing favorites are upbeat, happy-go-lucky sweet love songs on one side of the coin (a la “Our Song” and “Hey Stephen”) and songs about the perils and anxieties associated with love on the other (a la “Treacherous”, “Haunted”, “Death By A Thousand Cuts”, “All Too Well”, and even “Cornelia Street”, which is sentimental while also being about the anxiety that comes with entering a new relationship and those familiar thoughts of “it feels great now, but if it doesn’t work out, I’ll be crushed.” Come to think of it, it also fits into the sweet lovey category. I think that pinpoints why I love that song. It’s like the intersection of my two fave themes! ☺️ Maybe I should have it ranked higher than Number 10. 🤔 😅 I do love a good track from a Taylor who’s been wronged, too (thinking of Picture To Burn and Should’ve Said No”), but ultimately it’s the sad and reflective tracks about lost love that do it for me best. I ❤️ Haunted original and Acoustic about the same. Can’t choose a favorite. And The All Too Well I prefer is the 2012 shorter version. I love talking all about the poet and artist that Taylor is and I think sharing opinions is really fun. Feel free to share as much or as little as you want! I know you don’t like her, and she’s not my favourite either (I’d say respectable bop), but thank you for sparing her life. 😘 In defence of epiphany, I think the song content is a lot more palatable if you consider that it was written at the very beginning of the pandemic. It hasn’t aged well because we’re so bored of hearing about covid. But Taylor was far from the only person making comparisons between soldiers on the front line and healthcare workers at the start of the pandemic, especially in reference to places that were overwhelmed like northern Italy and New York. Although the song is long, I personally find the production quite pretty- it’s appropriate to the subject matter, almost ethereal. Epiphany is not a skip for me, I almost always listen to it all the way through. As such, IMO, folklore is a (and Taylor’s only) skipless album.

They would have been the feminist and LGBT anthems she wanted (and expected) them to be. Hear me out. I admit that the arguments Taylor makes in The Man are only valid to a point. Where she loses me is the chorus, where she makes a confused case for how she’d be further along in her career were she a man. I don’t think this is something she can reasonably argue, given that, arguably, she would not have taken off the way she did were she a man. She made her start in the male dominated country genre, and managed to stand out because she was literally the only young woman. She continued to stand out with intense emotional vulnerability in her lyrics, which is palatable to audiences from a woman, because women are stereotypically emotional. Don’t get me wrong, I think if Taylor Swift were a man, I think he would still be a successful recording artist. I just don’t think he’d be as successful as her. However, a lot of the other arguments she makes in the man are cutting and very true. They remind me of the interviews where she called out the sexism of critique around writing breakup songs, when no one says the same of Bruno Mars or Ed Sheeran. We can infer from the Miss Americana doco that she wanted to put out a song like The Man for a long time, but didn’t feel comfortable doing so during the 1989 era, when she was only just getting comfortable with using the word ‘feminist’. I think the main reason The Man didn’t land was the timing. Had it been released in 2014/15 (pre #metoo; 2017), almost all the arguments she made would have been hot takes. It would have captured some of the shock value that ‘If I Were a Boy’ (2008) garnered. By the time Taylor released The Man in 2019, no one really cared about hearing about feminism from a rich white lady anymore, and we definitely didn’t care about double standards, which had been raked over to death by that point. It might not have done as well as Blank Space, a superior song, but The Man would have supported Blank Space for a more complete story of where Taylor was actually coming from. I feel similarly about YNTCD. There’s nothing especially wrong with the lyrics. The gayest thing about that song is the video clip. The main issue is timing. Were Taylor to have released a song and video like this in 2014 (before same sex marriage was legalised across the USA in 2015), I feel her advocacy would have been far more welcome to the LGBT community (and of course, subject to more criticism from conservatives). Again, I think she would have liked to make her stance on gay rights clearer earlier in her career, and I feel sad that she felt she had to wait as long as she did, to the point where her advocacy was not only somewhat unnecessary, but unwanted. Anyway, if anyone’s read this far, I’d love to hear your opinion on this. I’d say ‘follow me for more spicy takes’, but I think I’m all out 😄

I agree with you on everything! a lot of the songs I love most of the fandom hates and the songs I think are overrated are the fandom's favs. 100% about WANEGBT AND IKYWT! swifties give these songs shit b/c it's basic. but they're fun bops. I think we, the swifties and the radio overplayed them so much that they are sick of them. but if you'll listen to them once in a while, they're fun and cute. unlike ME!SS who I see swifties defend this song for being a "fun" song. no, it's not. ME! is a kidz bop song at best. and even as a kidz bop it's bad. We're thinking the same on almost everything! Lover is her worst album imo and I do forget I Forgot That You Existed' is existing. I never listened to it since the album release. so boring. The Archer, The Man, London Boy are so bad and boring. SYGB! THANK YOU! most swifties rank it as their least favorite song b/c it's too difficult to listen, which I understand, as someone who lost his mom to brain tumor exactly a year ago, I relate to this song so much, and the song is so powerful and I love it, it makes me think of my mom and I never skip it. SYGB and marjorie are so good.
