For the Trope "Not who we thought you were", which has been fairly popular. I think the book "The Writing Retreat" does this well, as the question becomes "if i were to meet someone I looked up for, how would I react if I find out that they are not who I believed them to be". In the Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz this is with a group of women who adore the Feminist Horror Writer Roza Vallo, get to join her on an exclusive writing retreat at her estate. The book twists the "Not who I thought you were" very well. This trope is used in several ways within the novel with many characters as characters develop. Sometimes a character has an alternate identity, or perhaps never achieved what was claimed, and other things.

Love your videos!! Your recs are awesome. I totally agree with "it's all a dream" -no way! As a writer I've been told NEVER to do that! Missing child-YES!! "creepy child" yes! I think you're recs are spot on for my tastes. Psychological suspense--just fabulous.

I love this! I will say Charly Cox does police procedural thrillers soooo well. I’m so attached to the characters in her Alyssa Wyatt series. You get POVs from victims/perpetrators/detectives/townies it’s just so good. I’m finishing the 3rd book now!

@@haileyhughes it just feels fake to me - it’s like reading parts of a letter and waiting for a month before finishing the 3 page letter 🤣

Finally! Someone else who is over the cheating spouse trope!!! I'm sick of reading them in literally every thriller! Why can't we have a power couple who work together to get through whatever the thing is.

My fav tropes are toxic family dynamics, creepy children , obsession toxic friendships, rich people drama, “bitch Imma steal your life”, revenge, when the past comes back to haunt them, suburban women/mothers, and I love domestic settings

Fun video! I agree with most! But Speculative Twist, that's a "literally die" for me, lol. If you throw in a speculative twist with absolutely no foreshadowing that the story is operating in a possibly otherworldly realm, then you've lost me. It ranks right down there with All A Dream for cheap and lazy cop-out.

Have you read Phantom Limb by Lucinda Berry? I loved it, but I feel like it had that mental health trope in it. If you read it, I’d love to know your thoughts!
