In this episode, we'll be working on a condensed version of the Tiergarten in Berlin as well as a large cathedral. We also discuss some important aspects of the city and the direction of the series in a live-play at the end. Enjoy and Subscribe if you want to see more of 1929 Berlin recreated!
Berlin Noir is my detailed Cities: Skylines build based heavily on Berlin set in 1929. I hope to recreate the city set during this interesting time and demonstrate in the builds the wonderful culture of the late 1920s but also some of the social and political conflicts within the Weimar Republic.

Sorry everyone, it seems there were some audio issues towards the end during the live play. Not sure what happened there. Also, I'm sure people will comment this so I figured I'd mention it first: I experimented with using 20s jazz but it didn't turn out as i hoped (not to mention much louder than it seemed in the video editing software). I think I'll just stick to quiet classical music in the background for now on. Nonetheless, I hope you can look past these goofs and still enjoy the video.

My understanding of this time in history was that there were street markets just about everywhere. The average person did not own a car or cart so needed their day to day food stuffs within walking distance. There were small grocery stores popping up here and there, specifically during the 20s, as less-perishable foods became more abundant, but it was definitely and transitional period. Loving the series thus far though. Looking forward to the progress.

Oh, and to answer your question. I think you should be more inspired by history than forced into historical accuracy. Even with my comment above, do what you feel is best. I'd prefer you had creative freedom then making things as realistic as possible.

Not exactly truth, actually Berlin's traffic in 1929 was hugh, it was a nightmare, thats why they installed one of the first traffic lights on Potsdamerplatz, then considered the truly hearth of Europe, many people began to have car by the 20s and by the 30s it was a big part of the middle class population who was a owner, it is in this time Mercedes Benz and the Ford T-model popularized. Also not truth that distances were walked, Berlin (and most of Germany) had since the 1900s one of the best public transport systems in the world, composed by Trams, trains, hightrains and subways, buses, taxis, etc. You can check photos and videos about this up on youtube. Also about the markets, it was very strict the public space control on the German Empire, and even if in the Weimar Republic it relaxates a bit, it was never like a medieval market or something like that. Everything was very planned and organized in Berlin, many of it heredated from the prussian discipline passed on to the German Empire and then to the Weimar Republic.

I really like how you've started building a slightly different city, I think you should stick with this almost-recreation rather than doing a 100% recreation. It would also work better in terms of missing assets/pictures/images etc. Amazing work!

It's been a while since I've been this excited about a series. Great stuff! I think the game limitations would really get in the way of accurately recreating Berlin from this time period, so honestly I'd focus more on capturing the essence of the city instead of copying it completely.

Thats true. The Siegessäule was moved to the "großer Stern" in the late '30s and also had one story less (3 instead of then 4 of those stacked column parts)

I think you should build a berlin inspired city, so that important landmarks are as accurate as possible and the rest just has the vibes. You can unsubscribe to the renaissance buildings because Berlin wasn't really a big thing in 1600 and I'm 99,99% sure that there weren't any renaissance residential buildings left in 1929. And I think the same goes for the baroque residential buildings but maybe someone would like to comment on that.

Now on this you are very wrong, the Berlin of the beggining of the XX century was filled with thousands and thousands of "NEOs" (and this prefix is very important to understand why all of this buildings are here) all of them part of an important architectural movement called historicism, so yeah Berlin was full of Neo-Renaissance buildings, Neo-Baroque buildings, Neo-gothic, Neo-Classic, Neo-romanic, etc. All of them mostly been built between 1850 and 1920. Just as happened in any other large capital city of the time, but obviously Berlin has its particularity on this styles. You can check all of this on historical photos of the city, it was a very beautiful city, and most of it was destroyed on WWII. So I think it is a very good inspiredreconstruction of Berlin in 1929.

So glad you liked Babylon Berlin 👌 Let me share a thought with you. Have you considered adding a story to the videos? Like writing the actual Weimar Republic cronology at the ending cinematics? Something similar that Skibitth does with Arndorf, using a fictional mayor character. The city looks great already. Cheers from Barcelona!

Seeing this brings tears to my eyes. The near-total DELETION of so much of Germany during WW2 was just criminal, and so little was done to repair anything. Most cities were just literally erased and replaced. So much cultural heritage, gone forever.

First of all I want to compliment your build from the perspective of an German habitant, well done! I highly recommend you to go the more generic route, since Berlin is a huge city and a 1:1 recreation in a detailed way is nearly impossible because of the game‘s limitations. Also it can burn out your creativity very soon. Some technical advice from KZbinr to KZbinr: 1) There is a Mod that removes the grass stripes and the blobby rocks; also I recommend the Procedural Objects-Mod for saving on the Prop count. 2) Did you know that you lower Decals to make them fit in complicated shapes? >>> check out the Tutorial on my channel for this technique. 3) Your shadowing and lightening is very dark. Sometimes it‘s very hard to see things you mention in your commentary. Less SSAO would be better.

Hey, you mentioned, that you didn't find very much photos of Berlin of this time periode, so, didn't you saw my link, I posted in the comments on the last video? There you have a kind of "Google Earth" of the berlin of 1928, where you can see all the changes from above. For example the "Siegessäule" (Victory satue) originally wasn't placed in this roundabound but placed in front of the Reichstag. It was set in the roundabound by the Nazis for ther project Germania. Also Berlin is a pretty young city, so it doens't had somethingh like a classic old town. It's status as a capital it first gets for the kingdom of Prussia wich was founded 1701 and then Berlin began to rise. before it was a pretty small town.

Sorry if I didn't explain it well, but in the beginning i said that many viewers gave me resources to look at to help me out. I also mentioned the awesome link you gave me at 16:12 during the live play. I did say that it'll still be a little difficult to create a 1929 Berlin but that's mostly cause I've never built a European city before. It will be easier though thanks to the link you provided. So thanks again for that. And as far as the victory statue, i probably will move it to the Reichstag since i am building the Reichstag in the next episode.

However I'm not sure if comments get deleted if I share the links so I'll just write the titles of the videos: "Berlin 1900 in colour!!!!" and "Berlin und Potsdam 1890 in Farbe! [...]". As an amateur historian, I'd rather see it be as historically accurate as you can get it. Obviously there are some limits due to sources and the game engine, but as best you can, that's what I'd prefer.

The distance between your Victory Column and Brandenburg gate is too short. It should be ab 5ish miles. Additionally, the Victory Column during this period would’ve been located in front of the Reichstag, not in the roundabout. The Victory Column was moved to its current location by the Nazis and a fourth drum was added so that it would be more “monumental”.
