"The Legend Of The Haunted Tree" tells a story from the Salzburg Flachgau region. At the highest point of the Hochfeld, near Straßwalchen, stands an old, weathered tree. It extends its ghostly branches toward the sky like branches crying out for help. A stately farm used to stand on this spot, surrounded by lush meadows and fertile fields. But the rich farmer was a terrible miser, you never saw him smile, and any poor person who came by and asked for alms was chased away by his two big, black dogs. One day there was a knock on the gate and a hollow-cheeked woman stood outside, holding a pale, emaciated little boy by her hand. She begged for work or, for God's sake, a piece of bread. But the goldman, as he was called, heartlessly evicted her from the farm. As the woman staggered past his pear tree, the boy stooped to grab a pear to satisfy his hunger. But the goldman saw this through his window and angrily stormed toward the woman and child with his two black dogs. But suddenly the dogs began to howl and could not move forward, and the farmer's blood turned cold with horror. The woman and child now stood upright before him, lightning bolts shooting from their shining eyes. "I am the fairy of Koglerberg," the woman said. "Once I wanted to hold out my hand to save you, but you pushed her away and now you must pay. Your proud farm, it is no more, you will forever stand in the place of your pear tree and the coldness of your heart will forever permeate this ground!" The fairy disappeared, but the farmer stood in this spot ever since, a bare, crippled tree, stretching out its barren hands to the windy sky.
