Hey everyone! As a reminder, the goal of this video was to appreciate the friendship between Tifa and Aerith, not to debate about the love triangle. Remember that it’s ok to have your own interpretation whether it be neutral or one side or the other as long as you’re respectful about it. I want my comment sections and community to be as respectful as possible so people feel comfortable with having healthy discussions about a game that means a lot to us. The friendship of Aerith and Tifa is one of the best in JRPGs. They had a pretty good friendship in the OG but man is their sisterhood so well defined in the remake and rebirth.

Thank you so much for making this video, especially right now considering how the fandom is reacting to recent comments that were made by Rebirth's director. It bothers me so much how the fandom puts Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith in a love triangle, since its clear that the characters themselves do not view each other as romantic rivals, and in the case of Cloud, does not think of Tifa and Aerith as opposing romantic choices. While I also personally ship Cloud and Tifa together, I hate how shippers, as a consequence of their debates with each other, inadvertently reduce Tifa and Aerith's characters into just being love interests for Cloud, when they are so much more than that. It's amazing that a predominantly male dev team in Japan have created two incredible female characters who are so well written, and that so much attention was put into their strong friendship. So I think its great that you've created videos highlighting their wonderful friendship. Also, I really like the point you made about the yellow flower symbolizing the glue that keeps the three characters together.

As a woman, I’m such a fan of how they developed these characters. But also as a woman I hate how the fandom misunderstands these characters and reduces them to love interests/rivals when there’s so much in game evidence that that’s not the case at all. Fantastic video! 💯 The friendship between Tifa and Aerith is so iconic and extremely well made. It might be my favorite thing about the Final Fantasy VII Remakes and I consider it to be a major improvement over the original PS1 game. The character dynamics, emotional moments, and humor between Tifa and Aerith was incredible and a major highlight of these games. I appreciate you for making these analysis videos and giving these fantastic FF7 Remake games the credit that they deserve.

I actually started replaying the OG yesterday to grab footage and it is really night and day with how much their relationship was fleshed out in these retrilogy games. I’m glad you liked my videos about them. I definitely wanted to give their dynamic and friendship more attention especially with how much toxicity there is in the fandom considering them. When we know that there’s nothing but love and respect between Tifa and Aerith. But yeah, I will definitely make more videos about Remake and Rebirth as there is definitely so much to talk about ☺️

What so many fans and critics (thinking back to an old NpR reviewer who talked about Aerith’s role) forget is that Aerith impacted everyone she came into contact with especially Tifa. Aerith is a very open, stubborn and even insensitive at times. Because she is very clear about what she wants but is also so kind, it makes sense Tifa, who is very motherly, empathic but also willing to throw down,, would be drawn to her and vice versa. Aerith may actually be a role model for Tifa in terms of being more open a k t what she wants. Tifa Afterall locks her heart in (get it?) it’s how Tifa is able to handle the stress of the world. Aerith has similar trauma yet choose not to try to always act happy/helpful or to act in ways that she can’t comprehend. Tifa even says rebirth that she hates having a need to please and we do have to consider why Tifa is desperate to keep cloud along even when he poses a risk to everyone. Is she subconsciously trying to keep alive her childhood as everything goes to hell? For Aerith, tifa is I think her only true girl friend. The girl had no one really growing up. Aerith wants to be normal, to have a happy childhood. She never quite got that even when she found a new mom (seriously ff7 has a powerful feminist story about women helping each other and a wide range of female characters both good and bad). Tifa, who is deeply compassionate and friendly, allows aerith a chance to be normal and to have someone who worth can rely on for supports. Aerith dosnt want to be a hero, she hates the burden her heritage has placed, she didn’t want to die, but she loves her friends (cloud, aerith, yuffie, Barrett…) for the fact that they FIGHT FOR HER. In the end, when aerith died in OG,, tifa runs away crying and stoking aerith’s fsce. How can we say truly this was a love triangle between two girls and a man? I mean yes it was but that ignores what aerith and tifa meant to each other. That friendship, the promise of hanging out, gossiping, beating bad guys with chairs, even to laugh at inside jokes…is gone. The two will never get a chance to resolve their feelings for cloud with each other. To tifa, it’s another reminder of the people she loves dying and she wasn’t strong enough to save her. Tifa and the gang never forgot aerith, but I have no doubt Tifa WOULD GIVE NEARLY ANYTHING to say goodbye to Aerith.

They complement each other so well in their differing personalities, backgrounds, and roles in the story that they really were fated to become friends to help each other. I just love how much the developers got this female friendship right! It’s such a great example for women to look to in their friendships because women are constantly being pitted against each other and sometimes we do it to ourselves. It’s unsurprising that it’s been happening in the fandom for 27 years, but it was never intended to be that way. I’m glad that you and others in my comment section understand this friendship so well and how much these characters positively impacted each other. I made these videos because I was sick of seeing the toxicity of the fandom when it comes to this illusionary competition between Tifa and Aerith, so it really warms my heart that there are many who saw the friendship that I saw in these games and understood it. I just LOVE the friendship between Tifa and Aerith as it is portrayed in Remake and Rebirth. Sometimes it makes me feel like they share a deeper, more meaningful (platonic) bond with each other than with Cloud, to be honest. It's just so refreshing to see two heroines who are there for each other, strengthen their backs and pick each other up if needed although both are a valid romantic option for the male protagonist. In most pieces of media the two girls would be pitted against each other and they would actively try to outshine the other and/or try to put the other down. But Aerith and Tifa together are just wholesome! And I love it! (And because of that the harshness of some people's comments in the fandom pains me even more. Aerith and Tifa don't hate each other or see themselves as rivals regarding Cloud. But still some people try to validate their ship by talking trash about the other girl (which would deeply hurt their favourite girl if she was a true person and not just a videogame character).)

@@labrynna87 lol I was actually talking to someone about this last night! I felt like in Rebirth there were more meaningful scenes between Aerith and Tifa than Aerith and Cloud. But yeah, the points you made are exactly why I made these videos. I got sick of seeing the toxicity between the shippers. Oftentimes I ask myself if we played the same game because Tifa and Aerith never showed any sign of any bad blood and only showed the exact opposite. It’s a really good example to women out there and to people who write female characters to not let things like Cloud get between them. It’s so refreshing because as a woman most of what I see portrayed in media is competition between women and that makes me really sad but also angry. So, I hate seeing that in the fandom. It’s all to boost their ship, but ironically that is the exact antithesis of what both characters are about. Anyway, it makes me happy that there are people out there like you who feel this way about this too.

@@SNWSTORM Well, I have to admit that I had quite the rocky start with Aerith, though. ^^' When I first came into contact with the franchise I loathed her - but not because the love triangle (although it somewhat contributed to that). My first expierence with anything FF VII related was when my roommate back then and I watched Advent Children. You don't really get to know Aerith in this film and due to the bits of her you get to see I thought she would fall into a trope I truly hate: the Holy Maiden. I absolutley disgust this trope because I think it's hurtful to (young) women and one of the reasons why things like sl*t shaming is a thing because it contributes to the believe that women only have (some) worth if they are absolutely pure and willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. And therefore, I disliked Aerith very much. However, while watching that film another character caught my attention: Zack. When he appeared at the end of the film I had no idea who that guy was suppossed to be but somehow I wanted to know. Long story short: I searched the internet, found out about Crisis Core and started playing it shortly after. And I completely fell in love with Zack. To this day he's my favourite videogame hero/protagonist of all time. Of course I also met Aerith again while playing CC and was pleasantly surprised. I thought she was sweet and quite a different character I thought her to be. I started to like her. After that I was hooked on FF VII and played the OG and... oh boy... I have to say that I'm German and therefore I played the OG in German and the German localisation for this game is bad. I mean, really baaaaaaad! (I know the English localisation isn't good, too, but in comparision it's great.) And it did Aerith quite dirty, in my opinion, because - to me, at least - she didn't make the impression that she was playful and teasing Cloud most of the time. No, I had the feeling she was aggressivly flirting with him and that she was interested in him BECAUSE (not despite) he had a potential thing with Tifa. On top of that her few lines about Zack didn't make him look very good and as if she never really cared for him and I kind of took that personal... ^^' So I was back to despising Aerith... but for different reasons than before. The turnaround finally came with Remake. I think they portrayed her perfectly in the new games and finally managed to show her (to a world wide audience) as she was always meant to be: sweet, caring, funny, playful, emotionally strong and loveable from tip to toe. (I still like Tifa better but it's a close one now.)

@@labrynna87 That is a very interesting entry to the series, but I’m glad you’re here! I watched Advent Children recently and can definitely see how that wasn’t the best place to start to get a first impression of Aerith 😅 I feel like they leaned heavily into a saintly Virgin Mary kind of archetype. And that sounds awful about the German localization in the OG. I never thought about how it would be in other languages. The retrilogy was definitely necessary in that case. But yeah, I totally agree. Aerith subverts these tropes. Her role in the plot is to help the planet against Sephiroth, but she doesn’t act like the pure healer archetype and shows how human she is. Zack is a really great character. I haven’t played CC yet (I will next), but I have watched playthroughs and his death scene gets me every time. He was created late in development for the OG though and that game was mainly Cloud’s story, but I’m glad that the devs decided to make a prequel game about Zack. And with Rebirth, I thought the stuff they are doing with him there is really interesting. I’m excited to see what they’ll do with him in part 3. I am lowkey hoping there’s a reunion scene with him and Aerith. They’re sweet. But yeah, I totally understand. For a bit I started to not like Aerith, but that was because of the shippers, but then I met Briana White. Talking with her made me realize that I needed to appreciate Aerith more. So, I started making these videos and while going through my footage (and replaying Rebirth) I liked Aerith again. She really is such a good character and I’m really happy with how she was developed more in the retrilogy. But yeah, Tifa is my favorite character overall, so I’m especially happy with how they improved their friendship.

@@SNWSTORM Oh yes, I'm also hoping for a reunion of Zack and Aerith! I know, a girl is no prize for a man to win, so it sounds a little wrong when I phrase it like this, but I feel like Zack would really deserve that reunion. ^^' He's been through so much and I just want him to have some sort of happy ending. But I have to admit that I'm trying to not let my hopes get too high because I think that the developers will never give us a definitive answer to the love triangle because a) it makes people talk about the games and b) they know perfectly well they would p*ss off half the fan base either way. Therefore, I assume they'll leave things ambiguous. (And Aerith getting her happily ever after with Zack wouldn't fit that.) Still, a girl can dream - so I hope for a happy reunion. Brianna White is just so adorable! I watched some of her videos reacting to scenes of Remake and explaining some behind the scenes stuff and it was just heartwarming to see her joy and excitement about being a part of this game. Although I didn't dislike Aerith's previous voice(s?), Brianna easily is my favorite one. She just brings so much to an already great character! (In general, I think the new English voice cast does a great job. I even warmed up to Zack's new voice although I still prefer Rick Gomez. To be fair, though, Rick Gomez could read telephone numbers to me and I would still love to listen because I like his voice that much. So, it's no fair competition here. ^^')

@ Oh my god! The voice cast is just outstanding! They really understand the characters so well and really brought that emotional depth. It was really fun talking to Briana as a fellow gamer and KZbinr. She really understands how monumental her role is to the gaming community and is super humbled to be able to voice her. Tbh, I was first exposed to Reunion as far as CC is concerned, so I didn’t know about Rick Gomez until I saw how much people disliked Caleb’s portrayal. I was confused until I heard Rick’s voice, and yeah, I get it more now 😂 but, I will say that I think Caleb really improved during Rebirth, so I think it’s cool that he really listened to the criticism. I just hope that people will back off a little bit on that, though, because it would be really hard to fill Rick’s shoes. Caleb is trying to make Zack his own and I think that’s respectable. But yeah, I agree with you a lot. I feel like the devs are setting things up to be a happy ending for all 4, but yes, it’s a toss up really because of the damn shippers. I still say it’s a toss up because they’ve made some things almost smack you in the face obvious, but still shippers thrive off of cognitive dissonance. There’s even a kiss and they still act like that. So, I think that either way it’s hopeless. It will never end, but that’s a them problem 🤷‍♀️ I will say that even though the toxic shippers are loud, I feel like there’s a very large chunk of the fanbase that is really sick of the ambiguity of the LTD and the wars. It’s been nearly 30 years after all. I hate arguments and confrontation, so I really want it to end. I think it’s been long enough to milk this and I would really like for there to be more discussions about the actual plot and themes of the story, but it is what it is. But yeah, I’m trying not to get my hopes up either 😅

Btw there is a animation in the OG that beautifully represents what depth of feeling Tifa had for Aerith (spoilers for comment readers) when Aerith dies if you had Tifa in your party (Like how I did as a fellow CloudxTifa shipper) Tifa’s animation when she leaves Aerith is to gently fix her hair then run crying from the screen hand over her mouth because she truly loved her friend there is not a lot of animations and dialogue like this but I’m glad the Remakes expanded upon why she did that.

Thanks for making this video. This is exactly how I feel. Aerith, Tifa, and Cloud all care for each other. I would ship the throuple if that were an option in the game. It's just as you said. These two women are kind, compassionate, caring, brave, and selfless. That is so much more important than which one you think Cloud likes better. I hate seeing female characters reduced to that. Remake and Rebirth are my new favorite games. I want to keep loving them, and not have that experience spoiled by terrible fans who resort to character assassination in order to support their ship. I want to have conversations with people to share the fun I've had with these games, not to engage in some toxic and pointless debate. The actors are right; people need to chill.

@@SNWSTORM when I first started playing, the Aerith shippers were so vocal that I seriously thought she was the one. But as I played on, it's become clear that he cares romantically for Tifa, and while he deeply cares for Aerith, her flirtation is more of an annoyance. I've left groups and blocked people because of their toxic posts. No, the developers aren't going to read your fanfiction and write the story the way you want. The actors are just doing their job. They are portraying their roles the way they were written; they are not going to take your side in some furious shipping debate. They have no say over what happens to their characters so leave them alone. I am looking forward to part 3, but am also bracing for the apocalyptic meltdown I suspect certain fans will have when things don't go their way. They are so sure of things I just don't see happening. So I'm going to do my best to ignore them and block them out when the time comes.

@ Oh it’s gonna be hilarious when part 3 comes out and Tifa will find the real Cloud in the lifestream and they’ll have seggs under the highwind in 4k. I’ll be there with the popcorn. But yeah, it’s the absolute delusion and hubris that they think they know better than the DEVELOPERS about Cloud and Aerith is astounding. Like go to fanfiction if you don’t like it. Keep your head canon and stop harassing the people who understand the story. But yeah, I’ve been removing comments and blocking people too because this is my channel and I don’t want that toxicity here. And it’s so bad. Like some of the things I’ve seen them make up is macabre. And dumb writing if the developers would write it that way. I think the way they wrote it since the OG to subvert certain romantic tropes to make the actual love story a subversion that’s a crucial part of the actual plot is absolutely brilliant. And the narrative that Cleriths create is absolute cliche and terrible writing. The developers have said since the very beginning that they weren’t going to change major things to the actual plot of the story. So, no, they’re not going to change what actually happens in the plot of the story to appease the most toxic people in the fandom. So, yeah, it’s really annoying. And I only expect it to get worse, but at least we can block.

@SNWSTORM From the Final Fantasy games that I have played so far, tragedy and loss seem to be central themes. I think part of what makes people connect with the original FF7 was coming to love a character, and then having to experience grief and loss along with the rest of the party. Having that emotional impact is a really important part of that game. If you completely undo that, it loses all its impact. It changes from something real that we all have to face, to wish fulfillment that's disconnected from reality. I haven't played the OG and I don't know what's going to happen in part 3, but I trust the developers who made one of the best-selling games of all time to tell the story the way they want. I hope it will all make sense.

I myself am a massive Tifa fan and I do prefer Cloud with Tifa HOWEVER I also love Aerith as a character and love the relationship between her and Tifa so much so that I’m one of those people who lowkey ships the two girls lol. Like you said in the video this whole shipping war set by the fandom will never end. After all, it has existed since 1997 but people like you making videos like these do help bring about unity among the ff7 community. I think it’s really cool how much the developers developed their friendship so that more people can enjoy their dynamic instead of being involved in this nearly 3 decade long shipping war. you’re welcome, also I do need to let you know beforehand so that there’s no confusion, I do have a video titled “Tifa Lockhart is overrated and here’s why” but that was an April Fools video that I created as a way of poking fun at the Tifa haters. There’s a pt 2 but it’s basically me uploading the same video from the year before. I’m not saying everyone has to like Tifa but I’ve heard some really dumb things said about Tifa over the years that makes me question if people even played the same game as me or paid enough attention to the character but again it’s just my cheeky way of poking fun at the hate toward Tifa by pretending to be a hater lol. But I swear it’s the only example of me being toxic in a video 😅…. Anyways the one Tifa video I’m most proud of making is a video discussing arguably the most controversial thing about the character of Tifa among the FF7 community and geeks alive titled “Is FFVII’s Tifa Lockhart a S3X Symbol & is that a bad thing?” Basically me giving my 2 cents on the matter. Also going over what I’ve observed towards the evolution of the character as well as observing the fandom. And yes I do bring up certain Tifa controversies that went viral. This is sort of a Tifa Lockhart retrospective video as I do go over and analyse both her OG and Remake designs/models but its mostly a discussion video of mine. @ Thank you for explaining that. I’m glad you addressed those things that people misunderstand about her because that drives me crazy. I will probably make a video about that in the future too. A lot of it does boil down to misogyny. Just because Tifa dresses the way that she does doesn’t mean that she’s a slut. I dress in a similar way and I don’t give people who hit on me the time of day. It’s a topic that actually makes me angry, so it’s really good that you addressed it with clickbait titled videos so those toxic people would watch and realize how much they clearly misunderstand her as a character.

@ well thank you and yeah it sucks how misunderstood Tifa is a character but like you said it just boils down to misogyny. One of the things I’ve pointed out in my videos how Tifa and Aerith compliment each other in terms of personality and physical appearances. Despite Tifa being the one who shows off more skin, she’s actually a bit more shy and closed off meanwhile with Aerith despite dressing more modest than Tifa, she is more brash, throws herself into situations with an open mind and isn’t afraid to tell Cloud like it is lol. And Aerith is the flirtatious one not Tifa lol. While Aerith the healer is the one who needs physical support, Tifa the kickass martial artist is the one who needs emotional support. I love both Tifa & Aerith for different reasons. Both characters have their own way of helping Cloud out. And I love that the developers of Remake went out of their way to really display the friendship between Tifa & Aerith which is why it always baffle me when fans try to put these 2 against each other in these shipping wars. But hey it is what it is. Also I do wanna say that I envy you for having the opportunity to meet both Briana White and Britt Baron in person at the same con! I truly adore them as they both do an excellent job voicing their respective characters and even in interviews you can tell they truly understand their characters probably better than most people do. I watch Briana White’s streams of her playing Remake and Rebirth and it’s intriguing hearing perspective certain things in the games. I would love for Britt to join her in one of streams despite the fact that Britt has stated multiple times that she’s not really a gamer, I think it would be fun as a one time thing lol. Also my love for Tifa has grown so much that Ive even cosplay her a couple of times. While Tifa is someone I have a massive crush on and wish to one day find a girl almost as amazing she is, I also greatly admire Tifa and want to be as badass and compassionate as her despite the fact that she’s a fictional character lol. I’ve also thought about cosplaying Aerith too but I haven’t decided yet 😅

@ It’s very interesting how the writers have subverted a lot of things in the game and definitely Tifa and Aerith are a great example of that because of the reasons you brought up. Britt and Briana are great! They’re really humble and sweet too. I hope that you’ll get to meet them someday. They really did an excellent job with communicating the nuances of their characters in such an emotional and impactful way. And I agree with you. Tifa makes me want to be a better person. The more I’ve learned about her, the more I’ve been inspired by her. Especially when I read her story in Traces of Two Pasts. It’s so moving. I’ve only cosplayed her beach outfit when I met Britt and she was very complementary of my cosplay. I want to cosplay her normal outfit, but money has been tight lately. But yeah, it’s really amazing that Square created not one but TWO strong female protagonists in this game who both have their own strengths that do absolutely complement each other. I regret not covering that aspect in these videos, but I’ll probably make more about this subject. It makes me sad that people fail to see this and pit them against each other, but it’s not surprising since women are constantly being pitted against each other. It’s the main reason why I made these videos, because I just can’t be silently watching it happen anymore. I haven’t watched much of Briana’s videos tbh, but I definitely want to. I did watch her play the OG with John Bentley and that was really fun. I would love to see Britt join in, but I think it’s doubtful too, but we can hope right?

Right, I’m also a CloTi. Thank goodness, we also know it’s totally in line with the actual story. BUT, I also appreciate very much Aerith’s role in the story, to the planet, to Cloud + the whole team, last but not least, her precious friendship with Tifa, so well fleshed out in Remake series.
