Thomas Vinterberg and Mads Mikkelsen in conversation with TIFF in advance of ANOTHER ROUND's premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. Vinterberg and Mikkelsen reunite for ANOTHER ROUND, a sobering comedy about aging, alcoholism, and friendship between men.
The 45th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 10 to 19, 2020. For more, visit tiff.net.
In their first collaboration since 2012’s Oscar-nominated The Hunt, Thomas Vinterberg reunites with actor Mads Mikkelsen for ANOTHER ROUND, a film that ranks among each man’s best, most memorable work. Once the brightest teacher at his high school, Martin (Mikkelsen) has fallen into a seemingly permanent funk. He’s barely present in his classes - the students and their parents even attempt an intervention - and his marriage is slowly dissolving. At a birthday celebration, his three closest colleagues (all men), cajole teetotaller Martin into boozing along with them. They get progressively drunker and the shit-disturber of the group, Nikolaj (Magnus Millang), tells them about an obscure philosopher who argued humans aren’t born with enough alcohol in their blood. As an “experiment,” he proposes they all drink constantly throughout the day to maintain the “proper” blood-alcohol level of 0.05%.
Initially the boozing seems enormously beneficial. A reinvigorated Martin begins to engage with his students and shocks his long-suffering wife, Trine (Maria Bonnevie), with his new-found zest. But as the gang pushes their experiment further, issues that have been simmering for years come to the fore and the men are faced with a choice: reckon with their behaviour or continue on the same course.
Directed with insight and energy by Vinterberg, and driven by a great ensemble cast (Bonnevie, Millang, Lars Ranthe, and Thomas Bo Larsen) with the incomparable Mikkelsen at its centre, ANOTHER ROUND is a boisterous and sobering comedy about how men deal (and don’t deal) with aging - though underlying it all is a shared, unnerving suspicion they may never have actually grown up in the first place.

Fortunately it had a good run in theatres in Denmark, before the 2. wave closed everything down. 100.000 tickets in the opening weekend (Sep 24..28, 2020) and more in the 2. weekend. Weirdly, IMDB lists a December premiere with details behind a paywall.

Vinterberg is so right about this film being best viewed at the end of a pandemic. I saw it days after receiving my vaccine. I am so grateful, so fortunate. The world lost so much in the last year. But this movie, especially the ending, gave me hope for the future and reminded me how important it is to live life fully. The pandemic had the same effect.

My favorite way to describe Danish drinking culture is to tell how graduating our version of high school is celebrated. You see, what we do is load up the graduating class in the back of old military trucks along with several cases of beer and then drive them around for the day while the kids drink as much as they can to reach certain milestones or achievements which if they reach they get to cut different shapes into their graduating caps.

Any moment now, I was thinking, he will ask Mads "what are you drinking"... :-) On the other hand, I understand that this might hit some cultures, but I hate that the focus of the interview was only on drinking, where actually the movie is all on opening up and be your self, live your life.

Good interview. Just saw the film and liked it. But, I wonder if the message that Mr. Vinterberg wanted to convey was obstructed a bit by the troubles that the characters found themselves in. They pulled back from total excess sure, except Tommy.... but then at the end I was doubting it was going to stick. I don't personally have a problem with drinking from time to time, but I can't handle very much. For Mads Mikkelsen's character, I would have loved to see him learning to be free and fully himself without so much alcohol - I know it's possible! It seemed at the end of the film that he was going for it again and it didn't feel like a celebration to me, and it wasn't clear that he was happy about the texts from his wife either.... maybe that was intentional, not sure. Makes for an interesting conversation. Much love from 🇨🇦.

@@raindrops5432 Well, all creative talents tend to use tragedies for healing. It's the Grotowski way. Using trauma not only for creativity but for healing as well. Many artists have used their personal to guide in their creativity.

@@livnelson9709 but you can't be re-awakened if you drink alcohol, i.e. develop yourself, you just regress if you drink alcohol. So the philosopher got it wrong and so did all the film makers involved, what a waste of time! LOL!!

@@jamesshielssoberlife.3701 i believe the idea is that a slightly higher blood alcohol level (0.05 is not pissed, it’s a small amount. You’re allowed to drive at .05 in a lot of places) reduces anxiety, complacency, depression, fear etc just enough to make you a little more enthusiastic, social, crearive etc. And its true. But its a slippery slope because it’s easy to drink too much and get to a silly point

@@jamesshielssoberlife.3701 it could be argued that there are certain aspects of the personality that need to be regressed for a person to thrive and develop yourself. My creativity is deveoped by a small amount of alcohol because it regresses my self-critical voice, my fear and self involvement.
