I would not call his penalty a casual panenka: he knew how good Buffon was and he shoot for a risky shot that was far more powerful than a usual panenka. He knew what he was doing but he took an extremly risky shot to avoid Buffon. Trezeguet tried the exact same thing in the shootouts and it ended up costing France the game. That's how fear inducing Buffon was as a keeper.

@@M..n..M Zidane's penalty was absolutely a panenka. The idea that Zidane deliberately hit it on the bar is completely inaccurate. What Zidane was going for was something that looked more like Benzema's panenka vs Man City: a high chip down the middle of the goal. Benzema's panenka itself actually goes rather close to the crossbar; but due to adrenaline probably, Zizou unintentionally puts a bit more into it, such that it actually does end up hitting the bar. But if you look at the way the ball is hit, it is definitely a chip. Meanwhile , trezeguet just tried to whack the ball into the top left corner but hit the crossbar. But the fact that both shots hit the bar doesnt mean they are the same in style.

During the 1998 World Cup final, France played so well I thought the match was rigged. The WC was in France, so I thought for sure the match was fixed in-country for their National team to win. Back then, France wasn't particularly well known as a football powerhouse yet so I really tried to ignore how well France was playing against Brazil and knew little at the time about Zidane. I wasn't a big fan of Juventus so I never followed his club career. When Zidane went to Madrid (As a fan of Barca) I got to see his exploits. He blew my f*ckin hair back. This dude was a one man army. He could Defend, play Mid, Strike and Head. His passing was sublime. To top it all off, this dude could dribble like nobody else. He nut megged big names and carried the ball like it was part of his foot and pulled goals out of Nowhere. Truly a once in a generation player. In 2006, even though I was rooting for Italy, I felt the pain of his perceived stained legacy when he retired right after. Even when I booed France, I felt a bit saddened for Zidane and didn't blame him for his heatbutt on Materazzi. I knew he had to have said something vile to provoke an attack on the biggest world stage in the planet. I never forgot what he gave football and what he contributed. For me, although many would disagree, he singlehandedly put French football on the map. From Algerian Parents, despite all the prejudice and racism he endured being born and raised in South France and what he gave, they should build a f*ckin statue of him in Marseille. If his parents never immigrated to France, they would have remained an uninspiring national team.

The best player at this World Cup was actually Andrea Pirlo. He had 1 goal, 3 assists, the most chances created in the entire tournament (and from a deep-lying position), and 3 official MOTM awards (including the Final and semi-final). Pirlo was awarded the official FIFA Bronze Ball in 2006. Sofascore, however has Pirlo as the best rated performer in 2006. They have him good for 4 MOTM performances, including the Final and semi-final. But it's not just statistics, Pirlo had tournament defining moments and performances. Just like Zidane vs Brazil can't be adequately appreciated by quantitative stats, neither can Pirlo's performances vs Germany of France. He sought the ball constantly, orchestrating everything, and came up big when it mattered. His assist for Grosso in 119' minute against the hosts, Germany, in a stadium in which they'd never lost, to win the semi-final of the WC, was a moment of true inspiration. Three perfect corner-kick deliveries, one assisting Materazzi, another seeing Toni hit the crossbar, allowed Italy back into the Final in direct response to France taking the lead. Pirlo was Italy's calmest performer on the night, and stepped up to score the first penalty in the shootout. Legend.

Two of them were from penalties. Not exactly great goal scoring form. In that same span Italy managed 6 goals and none of them were from penalties. Zidane was a great player. I think it was *not* inevitable that Zidane would physically hurt Materazzi and be sent off. If Zidane made it until the second half of extra time without doing that, then he easily *could* have made it another 15 minutes. It was a combination of bad luck and split-second decisions by both men that made their notorious clash take place. But choices and bad luck are both things that conceivably *could* have gone differently. Anyway, my point is: “the inevitable clash” you mention at 3:57 was probably not so *inevitable* after all.

Zidane headbutts matterazi for family. He is a true gentle man. Fifa world cup isnt something that is important to him. It is family

Thuram didn’t wear 8 for France; maybe getting him mixed up with Marcel Desailly? Thuram was No15 I think

sooooo, Zidane won't manage France at least until Euro 2024, where will he go now ?

Zidane was always heavily overrated, during his entire career I never got what people saw in him. He was quite unimpressive and only stood out because France's team was mostly built on defense, not on technical skills. But compared to the rest of football, he was rather unremarkable, there were far more gifted and fascinating players around at that time.

Would have been nice to actually go into what was said, and how the officials missed the call, but saw it on replay in the stadium and showed the red anyway. Was never a fan of France, but after that shameful display from Zidane, they earned themseleves a lifelong opposition from me. Along with Suarez's WC bite and my dislike of Uraguay to this day.

Zizou will always be my goat. He was not the flashiest, not the fastest but damn his elegance. No crazy dribbles but the perfect first touch, one, two flawless steps and he was past his opponent. Still the epitome of football to me.

Materazzi said something about Zidanes sister

I had a few thought yesterday whilst watching the match about two other finals. Firstly, how France yesterday seemed to turn up in a daze and play very similarly to the Brazil side in the 1998 final for the first 80 minutes. Secondly, my thoughts inevitably turned to the other recent final which was their last appearance for their country - the 2006 Zidane final. I thought it fitting that Messi lifted the World Cup, a symbolism of winning everything possible. I also thought Zidanes departure in that final was quite Zidane like - he did have a nasty side which did appear now and again.

2006 wasnt the most recent time they appeared in the final.. they won it in Russia.

Italians were destined to win after their historic win agains Germany. As for Zidane, he let his nation down and this shameful incident would tarnish his legacy forever.
@LadyPrincessDiana2 жыл бұрын
Nope. You won't find many French people who resent him for that. He is still widely loved here (hence the recent popular outrage sparked by the president of the FFF towards Zidane), and we almost unanimously want him as the next coach of the French team. Why? Because his headbutt, while a mistake, was a reaction to Materazzi’s disnourable behaviour towards Zizou who had done him no harm. So his legacy is very much alive, and there is no shame on Zidane’s name in his own country.

“Italy’s win was overshadowed” , “Italy were presumed a prop” No. Perhaps some people thought this but 60 million Italians didn’t, as well as many others around the world. Please consider other’s opinions. This video is pointless.

I don't know how many of you actually heard about this, but the referee (Argentinian Elizondo) said that the 4th referee told him through his earpiece something along the lines of "Draw a red card, do it, believe me, it was brutal". Elizondo took in consideration that people wouldn't understand the red card since he wasn't looking when Zidane headbutted Matterazzi. So he went next to the (also Argentinian) linesman who would've seen this, told him "Hey, you're doing great" to make it look like that linesman told him about the headbutt (and not to place publicly the guilt of the linesman for not paying attention to that particular play) and he drew the red card that sent Zidane to the showers. By the way... SOMOS CAMPEONES PAPAAAAA. VAMOS ARGENTINA!!! 🇦🇷 🏆 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

If you were going to headbutt him and definitely get sent off, you might as well do it properly.....who has ever headbutted someone in the chest.....would barely of knocked the wind out of an asthmatic mouse.
