Football makes up roughly $900b for global sports betting, meaning that the match-fixing industry, which seeks to influence results and outcomes, is potentially worth billions in itself.
But what is match-fixing, where does it happen and who is involved?
And why is it so difficult to detect?
Alex Stewart explains. Henry Cooke illustrates.

A top former English referee was doing talks in my country to our local referee groups, and he told me about a match-fixing referee who he was assigned to assess. It was an Eastern European referee on some Europa Cup early qualifying round, and this assessor was called by UEFA beforehand, and told that the referee was suspected of being involved in fixing, and there were anomalous betting patterns, I think on one of the teams scoring 1 goal during the game. They wanted to catch him in the act, so they didn't pull him off the game, and this assessor had to act normal. The game was all going pretty simple, no weird decisions or anything, until the middle of the second half when he gave a penalty off a corner, gesturing there had been pushing in the box. Replays showed that there was absolutely nothing. So a penalty was given, but then it was missed, and for the rest of the game the assessor was expecting another weird call. But full time arrived, and nothing more out of the ordinary happened. The anomalous betting pattern wasn't fulfilled -- the fixers didn't win their bets. After the game the assessor had to carry on as normal and do the normal post-match assessor thing of talking to the referee, talking through various decisisons with him, giving feedback. Apparently the referee gave the weakest of "I saw a push" explanations for the penalty, and looked very uncomfortable, while being told by the assessor that it was a clear mistake based on video replays. Eventually the assessor had to ride with the referee to the airport, trying to act normal, and after they parted, the referee was arrested at the airport. It was interesting noting how the referee wasn't being asked to ensure the bet was fulfilled, just to swing the odds. I think the deal was, if the team hadn't scored a goal by a certain minute, the referee had to give them a penalty. He would have clearly waited around to try and hope it occurred naturally, but eventually he had to make one up. But after that, his job was done. It didn't matter what the outcome of the penalty was, they/he didn't want to draw attention to the fix by making multiple weird decisions

One story from a lower, regional Polish league in early 2000s. The home team made a deal they'll lose the game. There was one problem - a young Nigerian striker, new player. He had no clue and didn't speak Polish either. The whole game fans could hear his teammates shouting at each other "nie podawaj do czarnucha (don't pass to the negro)". They were afraid he will score, and they won't get their bonus.

I used to be a referee in Slovakian non-league and only once I was offered a 'bonus' for a win for the away team that was in a relegation battle. Luckily I was a lino at that game so I didn't have too much to decide apart from some tight offsides I wasn't sure about letting go in their favor. The team played so badly even we couldn't help them. So nothing came off it in the end. The interesting thing is that the player that contacted me was actually a referee himself who played on Sundays and refereed on Saturdays.

There's far too much money and exposure at the top end of the Game for match fixing to be rife. Man, I remember the Hoyzer scandal like it was yesterday. I was 10 at the time, and Hamburg was a team I didn't really care for all that much (I'm a Werder Bremen fan myself), but my old man's a Hamburg fan, and I vividly remember him ranting during and after the match about the utterly bizarre calls the referee made. And of course that became a pretty big deal because the World Cup was coming up and they didn't want a scandal like that just before a tournament here in Germany. Thankfully some reforms were done afterwards to prevent this from happening again, but still left a bad aftertaste. To this day, calling a referee a Hoyzer will immediately get you a yellow card in Germany because of that. There's been some other divisive stuff regarding this - another official for the game, Felix Zwayer, cooperated with Hoyzer according to Hoyzer's own testimony and supposedly accepted 300€ for this, but they never found conclusive proof for this despite Zwayer also doing some strange calls during that game. Guy is still working as a referee to this day.

a friend of my borther plays in the first slovenian league and he says that every match is fixed, some people go into the locker room and say everything that has to happen, sometimes it’s very precise like when that lady in the stands puts her hand up you need to shoot, assist or whatever needs to be done. I was there when he was explaining it and it was very sad, but what can you do

One of the main reasons of illegal betting is about how a lot of countries approach to betting markets. I'm from Turkey, not betting for about 3 years now but when I got used to betting few years back, I never felt the need of betting illegally in Ukraine where I was residing back then. Because there are multiple betting firms that operate freely and globally. Bookmaker offices are even comfy and they give you checks and cold cash at the spot. In Turkey however, the government gives the market to one firm, who then tries to exploit people with pathetic level of coefficients, narrow range of betting options, forcing people to pick at least three matches in one bet. All this forces people out of legal markets and everybody are using illegal ones.

Lyon 7-1 Dinamo Zagreb 2011 is one of the most obvious matches that comes to my mind. Just observe how the goals happen and consider the implications of the score line for both Ajax and Lyon. Also, another Champions League match between Liverpool and Debrecen 2009. The goalkeeper of Debrecen was supposed to let in at least 3 goals. Sadly for him, Liverpool only managed to score 1 goal.

I'm relatively certain that the Chinese and Russian OCGs have compromised my kids' U13 and U8 Soccer (football) leagues. I mean, last game that was so clearly a red card offense, in the box, but no penalty was awarded. It's just so shocking that the Russians would get to a 14 year-old ref, but it's also the only explanation.

@RealKingOfEngland
@RealKingOfEngland 3 жыл бұрын
@@duartedsmoreira its quite common knowledge tbh. Tennis only requires 1 person to be in on it / be bribed. It also offers lots of in-play markets with high odds. Cards in football is basically the same as above. Only requires one person and cards have high odds. Why would you try and bribe 2 whole football teams and management when you can just bribe 1 person? Ots easier, cheaper and harder to be found out.

@@bluemartini7768 My instincts tell me it was fixed, consciously I've got to remind myself he might just have had a really bad day but watching it, it felt off. Not just the Bellingham goal but also the penalty that wasn't and his manner towards it. He seemed more apologetic to the City players for not giving them a penalty they dived for than to the Dortmund players he was about to wrongly give a penalty against. And no yellow for simulation, there's contact with his knee and he act's like it's his head. Might just have been in way over his head or had a really bad day but I'm not there yet.

@@bluemartini7768 reffed one sided. Tried to give them a pen when clearly can didn’t do anything. Had be shown under a 200x zoom to change it looking for any detail to give it. Kept the yellow for can. Then with Jude the ref blew the whistle so VAR couldn’t give the goal it clearly was. And then also gave Jude a yellow. That’s not bad reffing from a very experienced consistent ref.

You guys should talk about how Moggi and Juve were controlling the Italian referees through Pairetto and Bergamo from the nineties up to ‘06. And don’t forget how Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina were also buying this privileges from Juve. You really should talk about it, from what I see no one outside of Italy knows how dirty Juve is when he comes to “winning is all it matters”...

It can be so easy. I love in-play, e.g. watching a game and knowing a player is a certainty to get booked. When it gets to 80mins plus the odds start to jump to anything between 12/1 and 50/1. A player could easily say to his mates “stick £100 on me getting booked after 83 mins” and all he has to do is pull someone back and they all cash-in
