That also counts for #24.. some people assume 24 is a 1" but its actually 24/16ths = 1 1/2" diameter.

That is so funny - my dad had a surveyor survey his property - at the corners was drive crime steel pump rods - decades later after I had inherited the property and was going to sell it - I called the same surveyor to survey the property again - when he finished his preliminary investigation he proudly said that whoever had surveyed the property had done it wrong and that the corner stake was in the wrong place. I asked him what his policy was if he made a mistake that was discovered in the future - he said he would resurvey for free... So I told him thank you and he could redo his original survey since he had done this same property about 27 years earlier. I told him I witnessed him and my dad driving that pump rod in with a sledgehammer... he immediately said he needed to recheck his calculations ... turned out he reconfirmed that the corner stake was actually correct lol... thieves are everywhere...

Been stick welding (off and on. mostly for myself) for over 50 years and MIG for at least half that long. TIG has long been on my 'someday' list. So this video, two real world guys getting into it is PERFECT for me. I just subscribed ..... THANKS!

I'm no welder, but it all made sense and was easy for me to follow. I say learn TIG, on videos and show how hard it can be and that it does take time and practice to learn! I myself would never be a good TIG welder, I'd kill the tungsten tips more than not, simply no patience for that type of work. yeah I ac stick and mig now and then and it looks great (LOL/not) I don't do anything structural nor life dependent :))

Give it a go Throttle, it is frustrating & stressful but stone the bloody crows mate, although I can't TIG for sh*t, I love practicing. I can also stick &MIG, but TIG has me hooked. At 64 it is kinda late to learn, a new skill, but "never too old" they say (yeah, right). I originally learned this stuff back in the 70s doing my (electrical) apprenticeship, I sucked then and basically, compared to a true welder, I suck today, lol. And you think you have problems? Well, with mild steel (base metal), I can use SS sticks (318 & 316) and Lo H (7016 & 7018), but can I used MS rods? Not a bloody hope, lmao! Absolutely terrible!! But the SS and Lo H welds turn out pretty darned good. I've had true welders crying, losing sleep and ringing me at 2am telling me they couldn't sleep after seeing what I'd done the previous day. Anyway, get to it, enjoy yourself, and have a Merry Christmas. Cheers from downunder.

The BEST Tig video! Kudos to Randy for the instruction. I mean this man covered everything without going crazy technical. The 1 amp per .001 guideline is perfect for a beginner. I've been welding with torch, stick and mig for years and needed to learn tig. I bought a 2000 dollar machine because when I started mig welding 35 years ago, I screwed myself trying to learn on a crappy machine. I have watched many videos about tig but this one is the Best! Great work guys and Thank You!

I see I still have a good deal to learn about gas mixes, pressures, and amperage levels. I really liked this video. While I knew a lot of the stuff here, I feel like the way you asked the welder questions was the same way I would have asked. One thing I asked my friend when he was teaching me is, "what am I going to do today to screw up." I could tell he had to think about it for a moment to answer me. He said that an easy mistake is to lean your elbow on the table and shock yourself.

What helped me when I was learning was just running beads on a piece of flat plate over and over again, not trying to weld two pieces together. Your torch is at a better angle to see what you're doing while you're still trying to get your left hand and right hand to work together. And you use a lot less steel if you put 20-30 beads on one piece, instead of 2-4 beads on two pieces. Welding Tips and Tricks is great for info.

here are a couple more pointers for Tig. your angle should be as close to vertical as you can while maintaining the ability to see the end of the electrode, it'll keep the gas on the weld area longer. 15-30 degrees is ideal, 45 is way too shallow (zero is straight up). if you're doing a fillet, split that direction in half. the best way to eliminate contamination is to keep your filler in the gas envelope without touching the tungsten or the part (unless you're doing laywire, which is really only to compensate for poor fitup). Stainless steel is a tattle-tale with how much heat you're putting in it. if you get to flat gray, you've overheated it. with your inverter machine, starting with aluminum, start with 70% penetration (30% cleaning) and go from there. same 1A per thousandth. also, the tungsten that's the most versatile for inverters is 2% lanthanated (blue) a number 9 torch with either 1mm or 1.6mm tungsten, you can go up to 110A. for up to 140A, 2.4mm (3/32") is a good start (number 17 torch) (60% duty cycle) for up to 170A , you need to go up to 3.2mm (1/8"). if you need to consistently go higher than that, you'll need a water cooled torch (number 20), then you can go up to 240A with the 3.2mm and if you need to go still higher, you'll need to use 4.2mm tungsten (number 18 torch) (both water cooled torches can do their rated max at 100% duty cycle.

TIG reminds me of brazing with acetylene I did years ago making jewelry. All I do in ARC stick welding on the farm though because it's easy and doesnt have to look nice.

I've been a tig welder for a military contractor for over 16 years mostly aluminum the Miller dynasty 350 watercooler is a very good machine I use a thumb switch instead of a foot pedal Lincoln has a hand switch too but it isn't as user friendly as the Miller

Great video! In case it helps: The cup number is the dimension of the diameter in 16ths of an inch. A 7 is 7/16". Stickout of the tungsten is the same dimension as the diameter of the cup, as a starting point. I have the same TIG 200 and it's a great machine.

I enjoy how to even if I already know.,,, I figure never too old to learn something new or more on what you think that you have covered as when you stop learning, breathing usually follows. Hence there is a message there somewhere

I first learned to weld with oxy acetylene way back in shop class. I don't know if they still teach it much, but the technique translates very well to tig welding. You really have to concentrate on the puddle size and shape with the torch and feed in the filler as needed to maintain the puddle. Concentrate on going slow and steady, gently working back and forth as needed. It all comes down to a constant puddle.

i did a lot of ark welding in high school, even did a reginal competition. mad it to state, good times but when i got the opportunity to do tig i was watching another person do it and they grounded themselves out and got shocked. I said " NOPE! im out." and never did it. lol still to this day i wish i tried it out.
