Welcome back to the Channel and welcome back to Tiger Beach…
Today - let’s dive in to spend a few minutes with the tigers… and the other sharks who call this part of the beautiful Bahamas home.
Just below the surface we find a lot of friendly Caribbean reef sharks… if you see a shark in the Bahamas, chances are it will be one of these sharks.
They hang here waiting for some bait and it makes for a very scenic sharky dive.
Today we are heading for the edge of a reef about 40 feet below the surface…. We will position ourselves on the side of the reef to get some spectacular images of the Tiger Sharks.
Legendary diver Jim Abernethy is leading the dive.
There’s really nothing like being in the water with these animals… in fact all the other sharks down here kind of disappear when you’re working with Tiger Sharks…. The bait is set up on one side of the reef so we can get images of the shark over the reef… and the tigers look great.
And so do the other sharks… like this lemon shark.
People ask - how do we do this safely… we wear all black - use a buddy team to watch out for the sharks… and always point to where the biggest sharks are. We also have a long dive briefing… and understand the nature of each dive…
The small yellow fish are yellow tailed snappers… looking for scraps…
The other fish under the tigers are remoras… again looking for tidbits of food…
The tigers are big and lumbering… so we have time to react to anything they do.. and we keep our movements slow… but always keeping an eye out for tigers in front of us or below us… and of course… behind us.
Jim will redirect the tiger sharks as needed… remember - a tiger shark can’t really swim in reverse…
As incredible as every hour is underwater at tiger beach… it’s soon time to go…
Tiger Beach is and always will be a legendary interface between people and nature… and something everyone should see. It really does shatter your perception of what these animals are.
