The first rated R movie I watched in theaters was Harold & Kumar, with my korean mother, who barely spoke english. I remember seeing the trailers for the movie back when I was in middle school and being super excited to see a korean actor on the big screen. When my friend and I got to the movie theater, we were heartbroken because we were under age. Frantically I ran out to the parking lot and begged my mother to watch with us. She was easily convinced after I told her the lead actor in the movie was a korean man. Thank you John Cho for the hilarious movie and the awkward conversations I later had to have with my mother about animal seamen. And thank you to Tigerbelly and the Slept King for this episode!

@@Bonsoirmonamie the US is comparable in terms of Asian proportion, the people who never saw an Asian person who actually grew up in the US probably just don't live in a major city, which seems to be a higher proportion because of all the habitable space. As far as I understand it more Canadians live in more concentrated areas. I myself grew up in a small town and only knew of three half Asian people until I was 18, that was it. That old sketch with Bobby and John was one of the hardest times I have laughed in my life. That was many years ago when I was a teenager when that aired. But that sketch has still remained in the top 3 hardest laughs and fond memories of that time.

Meanwhile Bobby has another podcast where the entire premise is pretty much him and his white friend keeping the Asian tropes going 😂

I really hope so. He just wrote a children book about LA riots and it would be amazing if this would inspire him to make it into a movie!

I used to give Asian actors some empathy when they take these really degrading roles because I think, what would any unemployed actor do just to get an in? But thank God we have people like John Cho who have enough self-respect in themselves and their background to actually be picky and not perpetuate stereotypes.
@GKTorn.2 жыл бұрын
But you still feel for the Asian actors that have to, and had to, take those stereotypical roles, right?
@hipnhappenin2 жыл бұрын
@@GKTorn. Well, like what John said, whatever position you feel you need to be in in life in order to turn down those roles is valid.

@@Scout555 yeah. The beginning where he said that racism was in the language of casting actors....really? So characters written as a certain race doesn't matter in story telling? I'm sure it is exactly the same in Korea for white actors.
@HO-yc3pv2 жыл бұрын
@@GameOgreDonkey Well United States is not a homogenous country like South Korea so the comparison itself is moot... There are almost no white person who identifies himself as a Korean whereas there are just so many Asians who identify as an American who speak fluent English.
