The bark comes off because it is spring time and the trees are full of sap!

Tree cutting machinery has come a long way in the past 50 years, the coolest thing when I was a kid was when my step-dad got a new log skidder.

Nice work by the operator, machine and you. Toilet paper raw material but I noticed he stacked a little cherry separately. They really keep that machine clean for being two years old. GNI

I know now that i have a harvestor i wont go into the woods without it.. gets rid of alot of trees quick .. like this spring had a 270 acre woods to clear cut and startedj on it the beginning of march and finished it 2 weeks ago. And started the next 112 acre spot last week. Only downside is need more skidders to keep up with it. Lol..
@InTheWoodyard

How many men with chainsaws is this machine doing the work of? Certainly must be hardly any injury and death in the woods now .In less than a minute a tree is felled, cut in to accurate lengths,half the bark stripped off and sorted if need be.And the operator will be as warm as toast in the winter no doubt listening to his favourite music.
@InTheWoodyard

Yup, I am sure it can do the work of 5-10 men or more, like chain saw did to an axe.

Used harvesters can cost $300,000+ depending on how many bells and whistles the unit has. To justify the price, this equipment should be running full-time including maintenance. That is an investment far beyond most.

In the South we call them feller/buncher.
@InTheWoodyard
@InTheWoodyard 3 ай бұрын
Yup, I have heard ....feller, buncher, processor, log machine but the company calls it a harvester so....
@iffykidmn8170
@iffykidmn8170 3 ай бұрын
I always thought of a feller buncher as laying down full length trees being skidded out with a grapple skidder to a landing and being run through a processor, thinking different parts of the country using generic terms in the end.

What happens to all the "slash" laying on the ground when they are done harvesting trees? Do they pile it up and burn it or.......???? Again I am from the plains of SD, we have no trees here (very few) when we have that stuff laying on the ground we have to pile it, or try to use it for firewood or something. (sometimes just burn it, after it is piled)

I wonder why after the tree gets its first cut and it’s felled the operator cuts off the bottom 6”?
@InTheWoodyard

Mainly to restart the measurement sensor for the log cut and to clean up the end from a crooked cut, hinge or rot.

By producing other revnue streams i.e. contract logging from this very expensive equipment he able to subsidize his firewood raw material acquisition costs to the point of close to net zero. Allowing his company to then process these no net cost wood logs into the higest value "excepting pizza oven kindling" firewood. Income is maximized and costs for raw materials is/are largely non-existent. Lots of capital deployed to lower costs and increase margins while keeping his finished products costs less than his compatitors that may have no employees. Even his bean counters are happy, Smart. Ray Stormont PS This equipment looks to be fun to operate, it's like the military guys who train mightly for special ops in no small part because they get to blow things up!!

Most of the time to reset the measuring sensors for log length but also to cut off any splitting/hinge/rot/crooked cuts from the end.
