Two captive Amur tigers have been translocated from Anna Paulowna Sanctuary in the Netherlands, to a semi-wild enclosure in the Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve in Kazakhstan, in a historic step toward reintroducing wild tigers back to Kazakhstan.
This ambitious program led by the Government of Kazakhstan with support from WWF and UNDP has been years in the making. Community engagement, habitat and prey restoration and improving the protection of the reserve have been key areas of focus.
If the two tigers successfully breed their cubs will be the first wild tigers to set foot on Kazakhstan soil in over 70 years. Follow us for more updates on this historic conservation project.
