Tightening Up a Kick Drum with Multiband Compression
Here's a quick tip on how to use a multiband compressor to tighten up a kick drum. It's all about using it to take control of the sound before it goes into any other processing.
I'm using Waves C6 but you can use any multiband compressor.

Great tutorial,much thanks for making this available...Interesting approach,appreciate the explanation of the settings/goals re-each of the 3 frequency areas focused on;TBCH liked both the A/B kick sounds and would use them together(layered) w/the B version (w/the lows more prominent) up in the mix and the A w/more of the overall transient/attack at a lower level,adjusted for the given mix...

i like this practice but it gives me doubt always keeping in mind that spliting a kick in bands is not best thing to do..i would also be interested to know more about the difference in settings(attack/release) between those bands

Interesting vid. I got a question. Why is the release of the mid-band so slow? The compressor is still pretty closed when the next hit comes and presses it even further down. Is there a special reason behind this?

Quick question: Did you multiband compress the kick drum inside of a kick drum bus or did you compress the kick drum independently? I just want to know before I try to multiband compress my drum bus.

It looks like it was on the Kick bus

I would do this on the kick drum bus usually. Then you’re processing the kick as a whole instead of messing around with the individual mics.
