Actually, in 1976, Jo Ann York had published her book, The Perfect Diet: How I Feed my family on $16 a Week (and Have Meat, Fish or Poultry on the Table Every Night". She was on many TV Shows and her articles were in Family Circle magazine. She was a French teacher at High School, but had two children 4&7, and was staying home with them in a rented apartment. Her husband was a Tailor in Washington DC and they was saving for a down-payment on a house. He made $140 a week. Her book was full of ways to save money. Other early people were Mary Hunt (she had been $100,000 in debt.) Your Money or Your Life" by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez (no kids). Steve & Annette Economides have written a lot, but I don't remember how early they started.

That was interesting! I was a huge fan of TheTightwad Gazette. I alsosubscribed to the newsletter in the 90's and have copies of the books. That was my first real introduction to frugality and a real inspiration. I live in Maine also and not too far from where Amy lives, so have seen her around, but dont know her personally. I aattended a Tightwad Gazette class years back that was being given by her business manager. It was interesting and informative. Glad to hear that she and her family are well.

I bought all three of the Tightwad Gazette books back in the 90s and they truly set me on a different course. As for them "running their course," I would agree that reading those books, or watching a bunch of KZbin videos, will give you everything you need to live a frugal life. The keys are some basic habits and creativity. In one of Amy's books, she says, might not be word-perfect, "Frugality without creativity is deprivation." If you approach your financial challenges with creativity and a sense of fun, everything goes much easier. It was wonderful hearing about how she is doing. The thing it tells me is, it works! She is able to live a peaceful life now because she busted her buns back in the day writing those books and being frugal, so now she doesn't have to have a major online presence or anything. Hurrah!!

@@imaamericangirl1406 absolutely. From this book I learned that squishing the toilet paper roll saves money. When the roll inside stays nice and round, the toilet paper rolls off really fast, more used. When it has a bend in it, it still rolls off easy but more slowly. Try it :) with a big family, this has saved us mega money.

Good post. I've read all three of the Tightwad Gazette books. To be completely honest i have mixed feelings about them and Amy. I generally like her style of writing, although there's a cold detachment vibe i get from her. Not a more friendly light heartedness that would have been wonderful. A kind of "yea gang we are all in this together" feeling would have been a huge plus. Amy's advice was usually good. The readers contributions however was 95% uselessjunk that should have never been printed. Stuff like steaming off uncancelled stamps to reuse etc. Much of the advice was for families, which i understand. But for us singles it cut the usable advice to about half. Now, since much of the advice is so dated. I use the books mostly for motivation and make up my own saving skills. But a good amount of the info is still appropriate . So if a person is able to pick and choose, the books can help. I feel its a shame Mrs. Dacyczyn threw the towel in and just stopped. I think there was a lot more to the story of why she did so then she'll admit. And i talked to a man who subscribed from the start. And he told me the readers felt really let down by Amy. But more surprising is that after her kids grew up, she didn't start up again with her own website. The need for this advice is even greater now in 2018 and beyond.

I sure would love if she wrote another book. I would love that. Thank you so much for your wonderful comments.

Your right, i agree. A new updated book or even a website would be great. I'm really surprised she doesn't want to get back into the frugal pool. This advice is needed now more than ever.

I recently placed the Complete TW Gazette from 1998.in my bathroom for reading. Wow--there is not a page that can apply fully to our lives today! We are so different! Phone bills used to be outrageous. My sons phone bill was higher that his plane ticket to Europe when he spent a semester there. I even moved my home location closer to my family to enable toll free phone calls in 1972. Every page reveals how different we are now. Led lights, solar panels, photo processing costs, newspaper costs, even clothing prices down because of cheaper styles, fuel economy cars and so much more...
