Urbex: ABANDONED House of PLENTY

As someone who is cleaning out their father's estate, I think I kind of understand why people sometimes abandon houses like this. It's a lot of work and very overwhelming to sort then sell and donate everything. Then clean, repair, and sell the house too. All while living your own life. It's also sad and sentimental because many of the objects have memories attached. Folding then donating my father's clothing was one of the saddest things I've ever had to do, because I remember him wearing most of them. A house is a home because of the memories within its walls. When a person dies, those memories still remain in those who were left behind. When we remember the person or tell stories about them to others, that helps them linger on just a little bit longer. Urban Explorers like TikiTrex help us keep these memories alive too, so that an abandoned house can still be a home to someone.

How well you worded your post. I had a jacket of my dad's that I kept wrapped in dry cleaning plastic wrap. Sometimes, I'd take it out, try it on, and go through the pockets-- he kept business cards with random numbers on them and various notes to himself. I'd sniff the collar and catch the faded scent of him mixed with his aftershave. I'd visit that jacket like it was him from time to time until one day, when I went into the closet and it was gone. My mother had gotten rid of it. I should have moved it to my closet, but I just thought it would be safe where it was... not so.

That was a great one!Too bad they don't rehabilitate able bodied and skilled homeless and allow them to live in the house rent free for a year in exchange for services in addition to a small salary. It would be a win,win for all involved. They could turn that into a shelter to rehabilitate and help them update their license and focus on helping them.After the year is up,the owner or the bank could sell the refurbished house.So many vacant buildings and so many homeless.It's a shame and a disgrace.Thanks for your great videos.

I often wonder what happened that everything had to be left behind with clothes still hanging in the closets seems to be maybe a death but who knows. There's evidence that there were kids there just makes you wonder where are these people are now. I love your explorations you take your time and talk your way through not like others that go through so fast it makes you dizzy swinging cameras back and forth you have no idea where your at or what your looking at. When I eventually sold it and bought my next house I spent about two years grieving for the first; I was really homesick. I've only recently got over this. So I'm sure the people who leave these abandoned houses must think of them but are perhaps not in a position to return.

muskndusk No offense but the very fact that completely owning your own house, successfully selling it to completely own another house and potentially even selling that to completely own a third house is even an option for you means that you really don't have that many problems to worry about. Many people can't ever even own 1 house. I would love the problem of being homesick yet still completely own a home.

The exercise item was called a "Bull Worker." It seems they are making them again! They were popular in the late 70's and early 80's. The other workout equipment looked of that era as well. But then, so did much of the rest of the contents. Thanks for the video!

Another excellent video! Just be aware that they used a LOT of asbestos in those old places. With the paint peeling and the wind blowing freely, the dust can be dangerous. Thanks for sharing. :-)

I have to say I was absolutely amazed at not only the amount of items left behind, but also the fact that there were so many high dollar items still there after 7 years. While so many of us here on your channel agree that pilfering these items is wrong, there are many more who don't have that same level of moral conscience, and one would expect that the house would've been emptied of it's more expensive contents by now. I frankly find that remarkable! Be that as it may, I am glad that you were able to find your way safely out! I know I've said it before, but I thoroughly enjoy each and every one of your videos. From all the items left and the way they were with all the boxes, bags etc., it kind of seems to me that since the person/persons who were maybe upset over loss or whatever and seeing so many things, just gave up and left. It's pretty amazing how a lot of of the stuff on the ground floor of that house was still entacked, because with all that junk just lying around abandoned you would think that a house like this would be a prime target for vandals and yet there are hardly any signs of vandals being their at all, so yeah it's amazing that this house wasn't completely ransacked despite being a mess. I was even surprised that there was a Franklin stove in that house, because Franklin stoves were lousy mainly because thanks to the placement of the pipes the Franklin stove was unable to properly ventilate out the smoke and it's because of that those stoves more often than not produced more smoke than actual heat so yeah the Franklin stove was not very popular because Ben Franklin did not give them much thought when he first invented them.

It's interesting to know that even with minimal maintenance, if people still lived in it, it wouldn't have deteriorated so much. Halfway through the tour, I'm really liking this house. Wish I could have it. :) 12:00: Preservation, perhaps. Knowing me, if I did acquire that house, I'd listen through every cassette, CD and watch every video I could get my hands on lol. That would fully satiate my curiosity about such things. End: You're welcome, Pam! I greatly enjoyed it. ;) It just pains me to see the roof giving way. If only somebody would renovate it ASAP. It obviously needs a new roof and may require new flooring and/or joists where the elements have been going in the most. See ya on your next adventure! ^_^

Peter Jolliffe, The residents must have been hoarders who were forced to leave abruptly for some reason, Maybe they didn't pay their property taxes or mortgage and thus the state or the bank foreclosed on the property. There may have been a police raid on the house possibly because the owner partook in anti-government activities. We don't really know

Wow! My first thought was, "what if there had been a fire? who could get out?" The combination of Franklin Stove and SO much stuff is scary! I would rather see my stuff become items in a garage sale than have it get thrown away. My grandparents had an attic full of neat old stuff and my uncle (without telling any of us) hired some guys to clear everything out and haul it to the dump. Antique furniture, old toys, handbuilt miniatures from the 1940's including a functioning swimming pool and a classroom with tiered levels and small desks, etc.

Depressing vid, in that sooo much of the stuff is/was resell-able, but now destined to go waste in a landfill. At 11:52 ..I think putting a teddy bear (fabric-based object) into a plastic bag was to either protect it from or kill bedbugs, fleas or some kind of insect on the bear. Anyway, good vid, Tiki.

This was fun. I was thinking the mixed family thing as well. The strange thing to me was that they left items that were obviously valuable to them. A leather jacket, and the newspaper and teddybear sealed in plastic seemed to be collectables of some kind. Also, the was random stuff was in random rooms in the house was weird. I wish you would have looked to see what was under that sheet in the downstairs room near the door and read the writing on the door with the padlock upstairs. It looks like the last one or two people who lived there were overwhelmed and left then maybe others came in and went through the contents of this house stuffed with belongings. I wonder what was there before the house was abandoned! At an Abandoned UK video I quoted Kathleen Norris's "Dakota" and her comment about people leaving houses and furniture, dishes, handmade quilts and family photos behind fits here. The passage ends with, "The truth was so painful it literally had to be abandoned".

***** Kids and grand kids use them for storage of junk they don't want to clutter up their places with. Just gets tossed inside any old way. One of them comes back looking for something and ends up tearing it apart looking for whatever. Animals get inside, freak out and smash it up. Then vandals come along going through everything looking for loot.

I can't help but wonder what shape the house was in when they left. It looks likes it's far worse than it should be for being left in 2008. Perhaps repairs were too expensive and the house couldn't sell without them? Anyway, clearing out a house is difficult especially if you are just planning on hauling stuff to the dump (and pay the dumping fee). Probably easier and cheaper to take what you want and leave the rest behind if your strapped for cash?

my dad found an abandon house here in Missouri . he found 2 deer rifles so he gave one to me and kept the other. right now him and a few of his pals are restoring it and that will be a house that we will be moving into after we are done with this house that we are currently living in (BY THE WAY the gun that he gave me is a .270 Winchester bolt and the one he kept was a 30-30 Winchester lever action)
