Hi, thanks for the nice informative video. One question I have to ask is, after the first harvest the nutrient liquid was about half finished right? So at that point do you refill it to the original level or can we just keep the jars with that left amount of liquid and continue for the 2nd harvest? and so on? Awaiting for your kind reply! Cheers!

I am as novice as a novice can be when it comes to gardening and have been watching dozens of similar videos. You pretty much covered everything I need to know in a very clear and concise manner, and left no stone uncovered or left any gaps in the process like many other videos do. The only minor thing not mentioned is whether you had to refill the liquid after your first growth cycle. Thanks for helping me decide to go with “grow big” as opposed to Masterblend. I wasn’t looking forward to measuring the 3 separate portions.
@TikkiOOO Жыл бұрын
Thanks Chainsaw cruz. If the container is big enough you don't have to refill. But if your container is small, or if you live in a very dry environment then you will need to refill. There is no rule, it depends on your growing environment and container size. If your water evaporated or it was in a small container, then toss out the remaining liquid and give the plant a fresh drink of hydroponic nutrients midway through the growing cycle. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!

Great video Tikki! I just started Kratky Hydro for lettuce! I do 5 things different that will save you time and money: 1.) skip the hydronton pebbles 2.) poke 5 holes in your rock wool cube with 1-2 seeds in each 3.) no need to remove seedlings and transplant 4.) stick rock wool with seeds in netcup in solution directly under CFL bulb (hood lamp) - about 5-10 inches. 5.) leave on 24 hr light cycle you will have lettuce in about 2 weeks! : ) Good luck! and I hope this helps you save money and time! (I use romaine lettuce, so you can leave multiple plants in one rock wool versus buttercrunch where there is only room for one) nonetheless - you dont have to buy expensive LED or grow light bulbs....cfl only costs about $3-4 dollars. i use master blend as well! Hope this helps your harvest and your wallet!

Zin Min, thanks for the tips! I leave the seedlings in the rockwool, I don't transplant. But I have the lights on for 16 hours a day, not 24. I wonder if that makes a big difference in growing time? In nature the plants have daylight and then night time, so it makes sense to have the lights off for a period of time. I will experiment with your way and see what happens, thanks again!

@@TikkiOOO sorry - i meant "transplant" the extras out and leave the single in. i thought they would prefer a break too! but, i saw an experiment on jeb gardner and he did it with basil...so i figured i would try with lettuce. i think he did lettuce too! lol this way really is as mhpgardner says, "set it and forget it" - i only do leg work in the hole punch, cutting neck for powerade bottle, aluminum foil, and mixing solution. after i put the seeds in - i sit it under the hood clamp with cfl 6 inches or so (the closer the better because the seeds should be short and fat - not so leggy in the beginning) - you can slowly adjust afterwards an inch or 2. i only touch them to admire the white roots! lol : )best to you tikki! you look like you are having as much fun as i am!

The reasoning behind why your plants grow faster in the larger containers comes down to two things, first that there is more oxygen in a larger volume of hydroclay, second is more space for root development. Impressive video for beginners, I had previous hydroponic knowledge so I went directly to aquaponic DWC. That being said, I end up with a lot of extra net cups & germinated seedlings and they just so happen to be next to my cache of mason jars. Thanks!

The larger jars have more oxygen at the root zone which is why I suppose they grew better. If these net posts were planted over a large reservoir with an aerator pumping oxygen to the roots instead of individual glass jars they would do even better.

Hi Tikki, great video and job well done. I'll be doing my butter crunch lettuce. 1st I'll start 3 seedling with rockwool and get the best one stronger moving to the next step then. Every week for 4 weeks doing this picking only one each week. By the time your 1st has fully growned the last one is just ending the 1 week cycle. So this way you have a full lettce head at the end of the 4th week. What cant be eaten can be given away to family ,friends etc... You leave a 1 1/2 inch above the flush base or 2 inches when harvesting. This way it grows from the remaining harvest cut. This last a good few times and you keep adding you solutions to it as it needs it. Keeping you light always at 12" away.

@TikkiOOO6 жыл бұрын
Tom H.....Good Question, is the slower growth due to the smaller resevoir, or the distance from the lights, I see an experiment here....two groups of plants, one set of smaller jars vs. larger jars, but placed at the same distance from the light. If the plants in the smaller jars still grow slower even when they are the same distance from the light, maybe we would have an answer....If anyone wants to do this experiment and let us know the results, please do.
@UberHummus6 жыл бұрын
I thought about this part of the video as well; I suspect that the amount of “air space” for the plants is significantly greater in the wide mouth jars. That slightly larger diameter could be a big deal for the plants, and perhaps they feel they have more space to grow? Especially as the water level depletes, the overall volume of space that frees up for the roots grows more for a wider jar. But, who knows; I’m just a math nerd, not a hydroponics expert
@UberHummus6 жыл бұрын
I did have a tutoring client whose parent constructed a large solid wood grow box for lettuce, lined it with food safe lining, and hoisted about 20 lettuce plants similar to this method. @@josegustavocastandiello2013 thanks jose, you are correct. I've got sprouts, microgreens and baby lettuce growing from every container I can find so we have fresh salad while we are staying inside, they call it "self isolating". Life is not normal right now, but growing vegetables keeps us healthy and happy. I just don't have enough glass mason jars....so.....it is what it is for now....stay safe jose!

Nice knowing about big & small jars and the sizes of the plants. Thanks. No clay pebbles? Smash clay pots to agreeable size.

Great presentation. I'm doing same this week with indoor Parsley, Lettuce, 2 Tomato plants, and maybe Basil again. Too many jars is a turn off for me. I'm using one large storage bin that holds 12 net cups. Like you, I'm doing without moving water; using 2 40 watt CFL lights. Enjoyed your show. Thanks, very informative and beautiful produce. ciao.

Wow, very ambitious. Good luck with the growing! Sometimes its better to grow in separate containers so that if one gets contaminated, you still have the others. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!

Very nice video. I've never done the cut and come again harvesting of my kratky or soil grown lettuce, but I'm going to try that with some plants I started last week. I usually harvest a few bottom leaves from each plant every couple of days and keep the plants producing for 2-3 months or more. Cut and come again might be easier in the long run if I plant regularly.

I’m wondering if you are still growing lettuce indoors? I found this video so understandable and I appreciate your guidance and information. I’m 71 years old and just now starting to enjoy a garden. I do have some of the fertilizer you mentioned earlier in the video that takes three ingredients. In order to save me some money can you give me that recipe? Thank you again
