For real! I've always had the most affectionate cats my whole life because I treat them with RESPECT! It's so frustrating.
@VictorianGentleman3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, my house has several cats, because we just kept ending up with strays, and they are all super sweet. Some of them started out pretty wild, but we gave them their space, provided for them, and just let them come to us when they were ready, and they all ended up being friendly sweethearts. None have ever been aggressive. I rarely get scratched by my cats, and when it does happen it was either an accident or my fault. Some are more sensitive than others, but you've just got to spend time with them and learn their individual boundaries. It's really not hard, but so often people don't do any research to actually figure out cat behavior, (which again, isn't difficult, none of this is a secret), and just assume they're bad because they don't act like dogs, (or because they don't understand any animal behavior at all.)

They assume and call all cats selfish, evil, mean, like every single word that demonizes them. It’s funny when I find videos and hear that people who’ve hated cats, finally own one by chance, and begin to actually love them. It’s all just stereotypical “cat bad” and “dog good”. It’s usually the owner who is responsible for how they handle their pets.

Bro I have to stay in a place where cats aren't allowed and I went back to see my cat Charlie today (he is being cared for by my Grandma) and he was literally the most affectionate cat today. I picked him up and sat him next to me on the couch and he immediately got comfy and laid down on my leg. If I was typing with two hands and not petting him he'd rub against my hand and demand my attention. He missed me so much. Cats have boundaries and their boundaries can be different varying person to person. Charlie's bio mother, Luna, is shy. Strangers can't pet her at all. I can only pet her if she's sitting or lying down somewhere. My Mom though, is her human. She follows her everywhere and lets her pet her almost anytime. Luna was feralborn and Charlie was born under my bed, so he is a bit friendlier than her. But he is still shy around strangers. I formed my bond with him by sitting next to him on the couch every now and then and watching youtube with him, petting him. Cats aren't assholes, they just take time to get to know. Dogs are all over you from the moment they see you, but just because cats aren't doesn't make them jerks.

Exactly. They need to think about how people who have experienced s*xual abuse ALSO can only learn to trust again when their boundaries are respected, because the whole core of abuse is that their boundaries were NOT respected. Sundowners syndrome does /not/ mean they "get aggressive at night". Sundowners syndrome is another term for CCD, or canine cognitive dysfunction. I like to call it doggy dementia. The aggression is from fear and confusion, the dog forgets where they are or who the people/pets around them are- just like when humans get dementia. She's not "helping" the dog at all, she's picking on an elderly dog who doesn't have the cognitive ability to self sooth or understand what's happening to them. I had to put my dog down last year because of his own decline from CCD. He seemed so afraid at night, he'd pace and look for me as soon as the lights went out and I went for bed, and when I went to comfort him it was like he was still searching for me. It goes in order of oldest to youngest, with mom/dad of the pack being leader as a simple family relationship. Its all crap. @@AnneDalton82 if you are in a dogs life since they are young (younger then it’s recommended to rehome them don’t try) and have a pack like setting you can become one of the “tops” tops of the pack. I am not even for sure yet if she realized I was the one with food till she was about 6 months old because my other dog would come out with me and distract her. Then when she finally payed enough attention to me after that she stared at me like her entire world flipped. But I do know I am not that far up in the pack because I’ve watched her multiple times straight up ignore me to instead investigate what her mom is doing or run around with my a lot better behaved dog who isn’t pack raised. As far as I can tell it’s a lot harder to train a pack puppy past basic manners then it is one not raised in that setting. Training is best if positive reinforcement, aka, do trick get a treat/praise, same with praising good behavior, not rewarding bad behavior. That's the essence of easy starting dog training. Pavlovian responses. Nothing that much deeper about it, except dogs have a hard time differentiating scolding and agreeing (if they're barking and you yell at them you're only teaching something they have a reason to be barking at something because you got upset as an excellent example). But it has nothing to do with any social standing with your animal. Dogs have some very human characteristics, but we need to stop humanizing them to this excess degree. It's just weird.

Honestly, I know the reason why “all small dogs are assholes” It’s because so many small dogs are treated like accessories, and objects. The owners think their attacks are unthreatening and even cute. I’m not necessarily saying all small dogs are assholes, I’m just saying a lot of them are trained to be that way. It’s a reflection of their owners. It’s so sad. My mom never understood this concept, so she just hates cats and chihuahuas just because they don’t give immediate love and attention right away. Owner of small dogs here! You're on the right track, but the issue is bigger than just the owner. I don't violate my dogs' boundaries and definitely don't think aggression is cute. But the rest of the world does! I do my best to keep them feeling safe, but strangers have literally picked them up against their will without asking (someone even tried prying one of them out of my arms as I told them to stop, that was traumatic for both of us!), or if my dogs bark or growl, people will laugh and stomp or bark back at them. Little kids are allowed to run squealing after my dogs without the parents trying to stop them. The world treats small dogs very differently than big dogs (I've had both), and lots of small dogs develop fear issues from that. It really only takes one or two incidents for a dog become apprehensive, and then those signs of fear (growling, barking, snapping) can provoke more disrespectful responses from people that just add fuel to the fire. Society in general treats small dogs like toys, so please don't always assume it's only about the owner. That said, if you see the owner mistreating their own dog like in these tikoks, then that poor dog never stood a chance! 😥

People need to understand that chihuahuas and such, aren't choosing to be born as the tiny creatures they are. I used to hate chihuahuas and think they were all 'demon dogs', up until my grandparents adopted one out of nowhere. They've rescued Great Danes for years and while they were away they boarded their Great Dane, Olive. She became attached to a chihuahua who was abandoned there, Poppy, and they were inseparable. Poppy would curl up on top of her as they slept, and seeing them together looked like something from a newspaper comic. She is the sweetest little dog and they treat her like gold. Olive has sadly passed now, as Great Danes have a really short lifespan, but Poppy is still around and keeping their laps and hearts warm. She really changed the way I see small dogs now and I'm so grateful for that.

I was the same. Grew up having big dogs from puppies, then 2 roughly 2 year old chihuahuas needed a home that we were able to provide. 7 years on they are lovable goofs, the improvement in their behaviour and mood just from having a happy, secure home has shown to everyone in our family that small dogs aren’t a problem, it’s down to the owners. Our lives are enriched by having them in it, and I hope they feel the same in their own doggie way 💕

"Sundowning syndrome" is a part of alzheimer's and dementia, and it's status as a separate syndrome is somewhat controversial. Just like in humans, pets also experience cognitive dysfunction similar to dementia or alzheimer's and display periods of agitation in their waking hours, which can happen at any point, not just in the evening. BUT, the point is, that the elderly dog has cognitive dysfunction, and continuing to bother the dog during her periods of agitation will only lead to more aggression, not less.
@AnneDalton822 жыл бұрын
And even then, I feel like it's only an excuse she made up once she started getting flack for the way she was treating them. My chiuahuah gets more snappy at night because she's tired and an old lady of 12 years old, so I learned to... Not bother her at night?? Even if the sundowners is real, you never agitate purposefully a medical condition?? So I totally agree with you. I still feel it's a crock of crap though, another KZbinr covered why. Its just too convenient that she's been making videos of the dog for a while now and only mentioned a google-researched medical condition once people started getting upset about the treatment! Every new person that meets my chihuahua I always say she doesn't like 1. Hats, 2. Tall men, 3. Her feet and rear being touched/messed with 4. She's grumpy at nighttime and wants to go to sleep early Doesn't make sense to leave out the "sundowners" till it's suddenly convenient... Its sus af

To anyone who does think this is overreacting, I've worked at a zoo, a pet store, a shelter, and dog sitting. I've taken multiple classes on dog training and animal behavior. This IS abuse. If it was just one video or something, fine. Whatever. But pushing your dog's boundaries *constantly* even when they're asking you to back off in healthy ways (whale-eying or avoiding eye contact. Licking lips. Growling) is absolutely emotional abuse. And it can be important to push those boundaries in some instances -- if she's taken claim of the couch or attacks people for simply walking by -- but this is going into HER space and INSTIGATING. And then having the nerve to label her as crazy or demonic? That's some massive bs.

I read a comment saying “shes giving her positive words/reinforcement, how is she emotionally abusing maddi” dogs can’t understand english, they associate words with the emotion that happens when the word is said. So if shes saying “i love you” or “its okay maddi” while shes upset, those are no linger positive words the dog now associates them with being stressed and messed with.
@AnneDalton822 жыл бұрын
People tend to over-assume dog's understanding of language.. dogs can learn though time certain sounds have associations but will never know the "meaning" of the word like that. Its another case of people over-humanizing. You're absolutely correct, the dog probably hears "it's ok Maddi" and is about to freak out cause they assume they're going to be messed with! Also tone, that baby voice tone she uses probably also triggers the dog. "I love you" only works if you show love, while shes just blatantly stressing them.. like an abuser hitting you, then saying "I love you" to make it all right.. really messed up. "I love you" but let me mess and do whatever I want with you because you cannot have boundaries, even if you're growling and biting and clearly saying "No" and "Stop" 😩😩 really gut wrenching. They shouldn't bother owning another dog really that dog needs a *new owner* like, last week ugh
@arzuriakuroi53232 жыл бұрын
Exactly, i one time explained that to a child who run after a dog to pet it exactly, and couldnt understand how running after the dog screaming is not positive for it, even if the screaming contains a "u are so cute i wanna pet u". So to explain it better i told the dog friendly and positive how i will take it to the butcher and make it my lunch, and will make gloves out of its fur for christmas, and the dog actually came to me wanting to be petted. XD And yeah dogs can understand a few words, so they understand if u say sit/come/stay etc, but they cant understand our full languange and sentences etc.

One thing I notice is that there’s a myth that every animal from an animal shelter was abused or neglected. People have brought pets in to the shelter I volunteer at for a bunch of different reasons, like expensive vet bills or because they’re escaping an abusive relationship themselves and can’t take their pets with them, but the general population doesn’t usually see that
@arzuriakuroi53232 жыл бұрын
I just want to throw in that while the cat/dog what ever wasnt neglected/abused purposfully/from our view, it could be that way for the animal. My cat was from the shelter too, and the owners before said that he was really affectionate and stuff (the couple divorced and didnt had the time anymore to care for him, so i wouldnt call that abuse or something in that way) But the cat was so hurt by being given away, and loosing their home and family, that he really took a lot of time until he trusted us to not leave him also. Nowadays when my parents were on vacation, and i stayed home together with the cat, he would lay in the bags? U know the big bag like things u take for holidays, i dont know the word for it. When my parents came back. As he is saying "dont leave again" :) I think u get my point. All pets in shelters, either lost their home/family or never had (a good) one to begin with. Wich is why all my pets until know were from shelters :)
@juliee5932 жыл бұрын
Yes, people always assume adopted dogs are gonna be "difficult" but most of them are just normal. My first dog ever is from a shelter and honestly he's a blessing. Already potty trained, patient, well behaved, doesn't mind car rides, learns quick... I think it's much easier to take care of an adult dog who already has a life of its own rather than buying a puppy and educating them starting from zero. Even shelter dogs who were neglected aren't necessarily hard to handle: you can always teach them the things they were not used to like brushing and cleaning ears.

Not to mention what I assume is one of if not the most common example, "my dog/cat had puppies/kittens and I can't care for them all"

And sometimes the dog or cat was a stray and they have no idea where they’re from. Or someone’s dog or cat gave birth and they couldn’t care for the babies themselves so they brought them to the shelter, or the owner passed away and they wanted to find a new home for the animal. I volunteer at shelters and these are a few reasons I’ve seen, among others. There’s more reasons animals are brought to shelters than abuse. For instance, my dog Poppy was found as a stray and we know little about her history. My dog Bagel was raised as a hunting dog but wasn’t a very good one, so the breeders brought him to a shelter so he could have a family and he’s one of the sweetest dogs ever,

The cat of my bf's mother(she is very good with dogs though, but i think the difference is a dog wants to devote themself as a part of the pack, while cats dont) is pretty similar to that. My bf and i live so close to them that the cat visits us often, and sometimes stays whole days at our place. He was very aggressive in the beginning to, didnt wanted to be touched, and didnt really comunicate at all. He would just attack without warning, or seemed to enjoy getting touched and than attacks and stuff like that. After a few months being more at our place, he learned to better comunicate when he want what, and when he dont. He still does some weird stuff. For example if u pet him and he really enjoys it he will make a very short high scream noice. Or when u pet him, he rolls around xD but that got so much better already, in the beginning he rolled all the time, so u had to constantly follow him to pet him, now he rolls around u :) and when u accudantly touched his belly and stuff because he just rolled over he would instantly attack, and now he understands that it isnt on purpose, and as long as u dont move your hand to fast in that moment, he wont attack (most of the times). And he got so affectionate over time, sometimes at night he comes and licks my nose because he want to cuddle, if u had told me that 2 years ago i would told u to see a therapist xD

I do wonder how many of them are constantly freaked out by living in a land of giants that just grab them and paw them around as they please.

I never understood the whole “Chihuahuas are demons” thing at all. I know sometimes people spoil them and they can become possessive but honestly I don’t think they deserve the reputation they get at all. My old Auntie had a Chihuahua and she was about as evil as a baby unicorn sleeping on a rainbow, she was super friendly, super cuddly and all around just an amazing little animal to be around. Sometimes I feel like the entire demon stereotype is just a product of people constantly annoying them because “haha they are small, make a funny noise and can’t do that much damage” which is something they’d never do to a bigger dog. Just because they are small doesn’t mean they don’t deserve as much respect as their larger cousins. Small 👏 dogs 👏 are 👏 still 👏 dogs

I'm not a huge fan of chihuahuas but I get that the demon stigma is messed up cause it reminds me of the violent/aggressive stigma surrounding pitbulls. Dogs pick up what you do to them, simple as that. The thing with small dogs is that a lot of people do not take their dogs seriously enough. Instead of accepting their boundaries when they show even the slightest sign of discontent, something they likely would not do with a bigger dog. Now, from the dog's perspective, they have a human who is too dense to read your basic communication, so obviously, if showing teeth or growling is not enough, the only solution is to exaggerate the communication - in other words, snap at the human and bite. Honestly, watching her videos broke my heart because it is so painfully clear how uncomfortable that dog is, yet she keeps doing all the things that contribute to this discomfort. Imagine someone touching your face and just constantly ignoring your plea to stop that. That's basically the life of that chihuahua - and many other small dogs, unfortunately. 💔

She’s not done toy to be poked and squished until she makes a funny noise.

Something I haven’t seen ppl mention: If Maddie is a senior dog with health problems, it might be likely she’s in pain, meaning picking her up will cause more pain. For example, my cat who is usually fine being picked up once got a vaccination in her thigh, and didn’t want to be picked up for a few days because she was sore. So by doing this stuff you’re not only ignoring signs of emotional distress in your pet, you could also miss out on early recognition of a medical issue.

I think the reason why lots of people think the breed is just “demonic” is because of the idea that Chihuahuas were only bred for appearance, and so their behaviour was ignored, thus making the chance of having more aggressive dogs more likely. Honestly, she had Maddie for what, 10 years? And she’s basically trying to blame all of Maddie’s behavior on theoretical abuse that may or may not have happened? That is ridiculous! My dog (Max) a few years ago was an ex-dog fighter who was literally left half dead on the vets doorstep. After he got better, no one would adopt a scary dog like him, until my stepdad came for his dog’s check up and heard that Max was going to be put down because no one would adopt him. My stepdad adopted him and 3 years later, married my mom. I was 9 and we had a small Shih Tzu, but this “scary” formerly abused dog was so sweet and gentle. Honestly the only thing I would say made him different was that he was very upfront about his feelings and boundaries and would let you know when he was done with your shit. He never bit or snapped at anyone, and he had been a dog fighter for 5 years. It only took less three years of training and reassurance for him to become a great family dog. People really need to understand that animals DO have boundaries. They'll be nice if they are respected unless something has happened to that animal before (brain damage, abuse, etc.). Chihuahuas can beespecially aggressive not by nature but since they're so small, people treat them like toys more than they do an actual animal, so they annoy it, and push it for things it doesn't want to do and it gets aggressive. From a human perspective, if you had someone constantly pushing your buttons and annoying you and treating you like an object, you'd get angry and aggressive too.

When we first got my dog, she was very snappy, etc.. But instead of doing this, we learned what frustrates her and we don’t do it. She also has very subtle “leave me alone” signs, but after just 1-2 (we’ve had her for 4 now) years, my whole family sees them. We’ve built up trust in her too. When we first got her, she never would have let us get as close as she begs us to now. This is a clear example of an asshole tormenting their dog for money. It’s disgusting.

I really fail to see whats cute or funny about dogs that are clearly in distress. If you did shit like that to a big German Shepherd youd do it once and then be sorry, cuz youd be getting stitches. I rescued my Chihuahua a few years ago from my aunt. He was abuse, under fed, and had a terrible phobia towards people getting close to him. I think I was 12 when I got him (I have videos with him) and he wouldn't even let anyone pet him. I slowly got close to him, showed him I meant no harm. Then later I found out he cried when I left for school. He was attached to me. I left for a week with my cousins so he could get use to my family. He did miss me but now he is close to everyone. Two years ago we found out he would cry often and found out he was over weight. He is now at a normal weight. But still not comfortable with strangers getting near him and will bark.

I will continue to say this: aggression in dogs is the fault of the owner, or what people have done to the dog, never the breed or dog itself. I had a chihuahua for about 10 years, and even though she had been through a lot, including becoming partially paralyzed, recovering from that, and many other things, the only issues we ever had with her were bathroom related and barking. She was genuinely so sweet, she just wasn’t very trusting of visitors, and would bark until way after they left. She never ever bit anybody. Chihuahuas are not evil but being babied, shook around, and even “spoiled” can result in them showing aggression.

This is actually wrong. Some dogs are just naturally reactive and in turn can show some signs of aggression which comes from reactive behaviour. It's near to impossible to train a very reactive dog, it can take years and nearly their whole lives to maintain and deal with just one bad behaviour. Learn your stuff before blaming all owners for their badly behaved dogs.

I'm not the biggest fan of small dogs but they still deserve respect and love.

A lot of small dogs are not well trained or socialized because they can't pull their owner on the leash, they can't reach tables and countertops, and if they are aggressive towards someone they can easily be picked up or put in another room. Not to mention people being super disrespectful or thinking that aggression is cute😤
@47ratsinahoodie3 жыл бұрын
@@livi6886 I definitely have a different idea of what a 'small' dog is compared to other people because I've had small dogs tug really hard on leashes (not enough to pull me if I'm paying attention obv but enough to surprise me). But yeah I definitely see what you mean, I was walking a pug and dachshund bonded pair (senior pups named Mr and Mrs, super adorable) and there was a time where Mr just wouldn't walk. He wasn't trying to sniff anything or walk elsewhere or lie down he just stood there. So I picked him up and walked Mrs back to the rescue. If I tried to do that with our German Shepherd Boomer, I'd probably throw my back out or piss him off. I noticed that small dogs are often treated like toys and bigger dogs are treated more like children and it's so messed up.

Look, even if the chihuahua WAS rescued then that makes it worse to keep making it so uncomfortable to the point where it's scared, stressed, and angry. Animals that have been in traumatic experiences needs to heal to feel safe and comfortable. This girl does anything to irritate her dog, no one could be that stupid to tell that the dog is very uncomfortable. There may be many reasons behind it but before she could ever give her dog affection she needs to build a healthy, trusting relationship. And even if the dog still doesn't want to be babied then accept it and enjoy the time you have. Dogs don't live forever or as long as we do.

Thank you for putting this topic out there because even I was guilty of doing this before, but not as bad. This really clarified the demon chihuahua situation and I would like to say that they are sweet when you give them space. Used to have four little dogs and one was just like this, abused and used from previous owner, no teeth and even no lower jaw, it was sad to see. Once you give them a chance and not rush them. They will come to you and lay on your lap and thank you for your patience while giving them a purpose. When I thought that teaching her to be nice was going to be in the right direction, but once I realized I was the problem I sat down and researched. Thank you again for clarifying about chihuahuas to others, because in the end they are like any sweet dog no matter the size.

The reason why most chihuahuas are aggressive and appear to be lil devils is because they're unintentionally trained to be aggressive. They're small dogs, they don't look intimidating at all when they're angry and most people associate them with squeaky toys. Humans finding their anger cute just destroyes their self-esteem since they recognize their threats are futile Chihuahuas are taught this way humans will just annoy and bother them, that's why most of them show aggression towards people Please stop treating your pets like toys, if you can't hadle the responsibility of taking care for another living creature just get a rock and draw eyes on it
