What I’m trying to say about the science contour - Makeup contour isn’t washed away by light/flash like the natural shadows of our bone structure. So to put contour in those areas will just look flat in pictures and certain lighting situations 👍🏼

Yes! This is one reason doing a nose contour in the traditional way you normally see, doesn’t work for my nose shape at all. I have a wider bridge that becomes part of the structure for my orbital bone. Putting a dark contour down each side of my nose flattens out the area under the eye and it’s unflattering. All faces are unique and not all techniques will flatter all faces. These directions feel the same as the kind you’d find on the back of eye shadows that told you where to put the crease color and lid color. I never understood why a dark crease color looked ghastly- until I understood that my deep set eyes already had a natural crease - and that really didn’t need any help! I now understand everyone has their own eye shape and placement of products is not going to be a One Size Fits All.

I love the science contour, I've been doing it for so long, depending on the situation. You really need to sculpt the face carefully though when using it, especially if you have shorter hair or your hair is up, because your side profile will look flatter in person. I love doing it in zoom. It can look emaciating so you really need to assess your facial structure before doing it.

Wigs too. Like makeup, they were popularized in Ancient Egypt and both genders wore them but men were more likely to simply because men often go bald prematurely. And pink used to be a "boys" color (because it's a lighter variation of red which is a powerful, "masculine" color.) Not to mention skirts and dress-like tunics were worn by men in most cultures. Men want to feel good about their appearance as much as women do, but society decided they should be ashamed of that. So makeup isn't misogynistic, it's misandrist. It's especially wild that men can't even wear concealer and foundation... How is it unmanly to want to cover zits 😭 self-confidence is not less important to men.

@@LunarEleven the thing about self-confidence is that we only teach girls that they should use makeup to feel more confident, not boys... Boys are fine the way they are, zits and all, but girls should always look flawless at all times 🤔 We should not disregard the fact that makeup is often used as a tool to oppress women. It's not just a neutral art form as long as there are companies profiting from inventing new insecurities for women every 3-4 business days and selling new makeup products to "fix" them. We need to push back against the system to reclaim makeup as a form of true self-expression, or at least pressure men to wear it too so we're not alone in it lmao.

omg the comment about grandkids is extra hilarious to me because not too long ago i found out one of my great grandpas that fought in the revolutionary war was what we call today a trans man. im not sure how he would've referred to himself but what i do know is that in his early 20s when he was still living as his assigned sex at birth (afab) he became very passionate that the colonies (as they were called back then) should have independence. so what did he do? took his 3 young children and fled in the middle of the night, hopped on a ship to the americas, and "pretended" to be a man to fight in the revolutionary war. he continued "pretending" to be a man until his death, and his three children were very adamant that nobody prepare his body for burial except them, for obvious reasons. im his great grandchild and ive gotta say im pretty damn proud of him and the amount of bravery it took to flee an unhappy marriage and wrangle his three young kids along the way while he himself was still barely an adult.

Im in a few feminist circles and the makeup hatred is very intense, but it's mostly directed at the beauty industry itself, because it's true that many of these brands benefit from people's insecurities. I've known women who couldn't leave the house without wearing makeup, it was their crutch and it's sad. I personally love the creativity of makeup, and I find the history of makeup fascinating, but I think it's important to acknowledge the unsavoury aspects of the makeup world, too.
@Beeleeteecee

I don’t leave the house without makeup but it shouldn’t make anyone sad. Because of my role at home and at work I am caring for others just about every second of my life, but not when I am doing my skincare and makeup. That is my time to focus on myself and I enjoy it. While I agree that brands benefit from people’s insecurities, it does not follow that people who wear makeup (even every day) are necessarily insecure. I feel like feminism should be about celebrating and supporting women doing whatever they want instead of assuming they are victims and don’t know what they really want or what is best for them. (Just a friendly reaction, because your ideas got me thinking. I’d never bring negative vibes here in Robert’s comments 💜!)

@@Beeleeteecee do you feel like you need makeup to be presentable? Do you dread anyone seeing your bare face? Do you hate looking at your bare skin? If not then I'm not really talking about you. Feminism doesn't celebrate every woman's choice, because not every choice we make is good. Is it feminist when a woman chooses to vote against allowing access to safe abortions ? No. Feminism has always been about liberating women from male oppression and patriarchy. It's important to support and uplift women but we should still criticize and examine some of the choices we make also. I'm not trying to bring negativity to Robert's page, I'm just hoping my comment reminds people to be a bit more critical when it comes to the beauty industry.
@alinashirinian2485
@alinashirinian2485 4 күн бұрын
@@wj1040 thank you so much for your comments. I feel like modern pop feminism really discourages women from critically examining their choices when it comes to makeup and beauty. That TikTok about how "well makeup was originally for men!!" is not the "gotcha" that creator thinks it is because things now are VERY different from how they were then. Makeup can be really fun and uplifting, but it can also be a tool to ruin women's self-confidence and reinforce unrealistic beauty standards. Like all these memes about how men think that photoshopped models with a full face of "no makeup" makeup are what women with no makeup on actually look like... these are not memes. This is the reality. The beauty industry is NOT our friend. It makes trillions off of damaging women are girls psychologically and physically. We should never forget that. And for many women makeup isn't even a choice! I don't know what it's like in the West, but here in Russia it's not uncommon for OFFICE jobs to have makeup as a dress code requirements for female employees. I still enjoy makeup as a hobby, but I have no illusions about it being "empowering" and "feminist". It is not, and it is okay. Not everything a woman does needs to be a girl power move.

THANK YOU for your little rant at the end (and book recommendation!) The 'science of contour' ignores that we are not just skin covering a skull and that we do not all have the same skull or desired outcome. That 'masculine contour' is often used for aging or 'sick and dying' on screen & stage. My cheekbones are most prominent on the sides, and I contour to make them look less prominent face-on. It is rarely performed in West, but there is even surgery people undergo to have cheekbones shaved down. So, even when people desire a look that overlaps with eurocentric beauty standards, it is not always achieved with eurocentric techniques. Sweeping generalisations about the best way to have a good-looking skull are uncomfortably close to phrenology.

It was opposite for me. Not being able to go out casually made me sit down and devour makeup videos, and I spent days playing with makeup to try to figure out once and for all if it was hopeless to try dramatic eye looks(verdict: yes, but only to those looks that require non-hooded eyes and lots of space between crease and brow. Robert has shown a few cute ones I can adapt for hooded eyes a bit.). The other plus was going through my crate full of liquid foundations that didn't match me(and determining that liquid foundation in general isn't suitable), and just use them before they went off and the money totally wasted. I now have a cushion foundation box that is for play with one foundation that is too light, but is in the right colour and undertone so I can get the overall application process down for my skin on the chance there is a liquid foundation that will like me.

This is a conversation my dad once had with a coworker. Basically this guy wasn't so happy about his looks. To which my dad responded with: "Well women have makeup" as in: "Most women wear makeup to look that way, men don't use that." and that lead us to a bigger discussion. In which I said it should be normalized for men to wear makeup. And he said others shouldn't criticize others for what they wear and do. Because it doesn't affect them. But that overall men don't have a culture for makeup and usually don't and won't wear makeup. I on the other hand was proud to see one of the brands I love and support created a makeup line specifically for men. Plain black packaging, men or something below the brand name. And they had some stable basics. Like a cleanser, a moisturizer, a beard and hairline filler, eye cream, concealer, a skin adjusting face tint, brow gel a face mask and more. And I found it not only a great idea but a good line to get people interested and started. Some people hate the idea of makeup for men. But in my personal opinion, if "for men" is included in black boring packaging will make men try this stuff and get interested then more power to them. I feel like we all associate makeup with women needing to be proper and good looking at all times. Or bright drag makeup on men. The thing is I use makeup as a form of art. Some teenage boy might want to use makeup to hide imperfections or make their skin look nicer. Or fill in that patch in their beard that isn't growing for some reason. Why not? Why do people need to complain about this? I bet that if half of those men went to a professional makeup counter they'd leave feeling so self concius about what they have said. They'd look at themselves wishing they could look like like that everyday. Or maybe they'll appreciate the work women do to look like that. And not disrespect them the way they always do. And I'm not saying they need a full face of makeup experience. But some corrective makeup. A tinted moisturizer, some concealer, a bit of bronzer/contour, a slight luminosity, some brow gel and a hint of a defining brown mascara with a dash of lip balm. It'll send them running to the makeup counter for sure.

Robert you’re a fuckin legend. Been watching you for a couple of months now and there was a recent vid where you mentioned how nice brown shadows and liner is with blue eyes for weddings. Well I’m a bridesmaid for a very small wedding in one month’s time, so no professional makeup for me. I’m 37 and have blue eyes. I bought the elf mini palette and a natural collection liner (ikr?! tbh I only got it cos I had points to use up but it’s honestly lovely) I still need to practise my blending a little but I’m not horrible at it and growing in confidence everyday. I’m confident I’ll feel great on the day so thank you so much. And the liner by its self for everyday wear is a fucking game changer.

EXACTLY. And it's so funny when men say that they don't like women who wear makeup because most of them expect bare-faced women to look like photoshopped models with a full face of "no makeup" makeup and think that women who actually don't wear any makeup/don't do beauty procedures are ugly/masculine/unkempt. They don't want natural women, they just want to have 24/7 unconditional access to flawless beauty, and makeup threatens that because "b-but what if she's fugly underneath" 🫠

I only really wear the "Full Maquillage" when I'm going to a family party, or when I'm getting over a migraine. I get massive dark circles after a migraine, so I correct that, then "cheer my face up". because it looks so miserable. We never know why anyone paints their face, so we should just appreciate the artistry!💌

Not sure if anyone's suggested this before but would you ever make a video recommending some books for people who are super into makeup? When you brought up pretty boys my ears perked up and I started wondering what other makeup books you might have (whether they're about makeup history, look books, teach makeup techniques etc.). I think that'd be a really interesting video!

But I would really like to see what you think about clinique foundations mostly. I've migrated toward Lancome mascara now, as it's gentler on my eyes, so I'm rethinking everything, but don't want to waste money trying things out. ❤❤

I really wish ppl would stop messing with their lips so haphazardly. I had an inflamed tissue growth in my lower lip as a 12 year old from something as simple as playing clarinet in school band. It impacted my self-esteem extremely negatively. My only option was to get it surgically removed, which I did, but it was a very negative experience in my youth and wouldn't wish the experience on anyone else.

As someone who wear’s make up everyday whether I leave the house to be creative with my look thank you for appreciating me. It has nothing to do with vanity and everything to do with my creativity and I’ve still been called a narcissist. I am not physically well and make up makes me happy. If I can at least look a little bit pretty then that’s something. Then I usually try to create something else pretty too. So thank you. It’s nice to know someone else understands.
