I don’t know, I’ve seen a family restaurant suddenly get business bc the daughter posted a video of her mom sitting alone waiting for customers; some now-famous musicians used the app to gain an audience. I think the jury is still out on social media in general, bc it provides what the news does not - ordinary people doing great and positive things. Of course there’s a lot of not-so-great content too, but yeah

The problem isn’t in the individual, it’s in society. A parent can easily prevent their kid from having a phone and watching tik tok. But it’s much more difficult to stop their kid from interacting with all the other kids who do look at it, and who show it to this kid. Because of things like tik tok, we live in a world where you either need to be a super controlling helicopter parent, or your kids gonna get corrupted pretty fast, because that’s the society the government has allowed

Yeah, my parents were like this, except they never gave me a reason beyond ‘you’re too young and the internet is a bad place’. They were tech savvy or interested in learning either, so I happily used whatever site or app I wanted ever since I was 10. Oh the other hand I have friends whose parents also were strict about SM in varying degrees but openly spoke to their kids as to why, and while not all of them abstained from SM, they were definitely more cautious and stayed much safer than me.

@@jazlyn2721 that's your opinion. He/she was raised differently and appreciates it. I had my son at 17, didn't much about hoe to raise a child since I was child myself but when he turned 5 I started playing chess with him and slowly introduced him to drawing, math, football (soccer) and basketball. I grew up speaking french, so I took him to w french speaking school, in east africa many people also speak swahili, so I introduced him to it. I'm 33 now and he just turned 16 last month and will graduate high school in September. He perfectly speaks french, swahili, kinyarwanda (my mother tongue),english and a bit of japanese cause I made him love mangas and japanese anime. He is the best under 18, basketball player in the country, a black belt, one of the best chess players and is graduating in a combination of math, physics, chemistry and biology. He likes reading books more than social media, i've always made sure he makes his own life experiences instead of having to take other people's opinions, to make sure he has his own critical thinking about life. In africa, we highly respect elders, because they are wise. Age is a sign of wisdom, it's very important to humble your kids when they are still young and make sure they hold the family values, country, cultures and traditions.

It's one thing to deny your kid a smartphone (they could still make perfect use of a regular cellphone to make calls and text), which could effectively hinder them access to the brian demage app at home. My child is 10 and it's our responsibility to monitor her device and what apps she's using. She's not allowed on TikTok because we want to keep her from being exposed to something she's not ready for. Same thing with Instagram. Parents become responsible for their children's internet usage the minute they buy them a phone, tablet, or computer. This whole banning situation is not about protecting and caring for children. If it were then school shootings, child poverty, underfunded schools, foster system reform, free breakfast/lunch programs, etc would be a priority.

Totally agree with everyone here, stating that it's the parents' job to raise their kids. But let's not forget the massive social responsibility tech companies have - and often ignore. Looking after your children does not negate the responsibility of tech companies to not make platforms accessible, which can exploit a child or be harmful to it through its own systems. Regulation is not a substitute for parenting, but it still needs to happen in addition to it.

Lmao what? You as a parent have full control of what your 8 year old does. My daughter doesnt go on tiktok, she has a ipad without any parental restrictions. But all her accounts are my accounts, i monitor everything she watches and does on that thing Saying its the platforms problem is downright avoiding responcibility.

I have 2 kids, 7yo and 10yo. I monitor their Tiktok usage with the family pairing tool and restrict them to 1 hr screen time on weekdays, and more on weekends -- subject to whether they have been on their best behavior. I also give them additional screen time if they can show me something educational or useful they have seen. This incentivizes them to watch more than just inane content and it works. Ultimately, parents shouldn't be expecting private companies to do the parenting for them or expect the government to ban all the new techie stuff they don't understand or dislike. That's not going to work in the era of technology.

I see where you’re coming from, but I dislike the idea that rewards and punishments are needs to guide children’s education. I believe that unless the outcome is fatal or life changing, one should just let kids be wrong and embrace the consequences. If I watch educational documentaries for the sake of reporting to parents in exchange for screen time, then it’s like a bounty rather than a self motivated cause. Same for punishments. If kids like inappropriate vids, they’ll find ways to get around the grey areas of punishment. They should realise from the bottom of their heart that good things are good and bad things are bad.

Let’s not forget these apps will still track your child’s development based on their app usage. Sure, the company says that you, as the parent, have the freedom to choose what your children have in the way of electronics and app usage, but the social media platforms will always be the middleman between you and your child’s app usage, which they gladly assume.

Reading through the comments, it really surprises me no one actually listened to what he says? He says Tiktok is COPPA compliant, and they have to provide a child version Tictok as a result of that. So it the US law that requires them to do that, not a choice they can make even if they perhaps want to.

@@PlayshotKalothey might have not been paid, but many of them have shares in Meta & Alphabet Inc. It's all public information eg Crenshaw has massive shares in both. If TikTok was to be banned in the US, stocks for Meta & Google would rise like crazy making these politicians very rich. So Mark Zuckerberg doesn't even have to try & convince them, their shares will do it for them Plus showing a firm stance against CCP builds their political image in the US. Unfortunate reality is, children's welfare & US data ranks really low on what they really care about

Drugs aren't as powerful on your citizens as the control of information is. If you can basically control all the information that children are viewing and shape it to fill their agenda, you can influence all their actions and decisions. They can take all your data and misuse it however they'd like too. There's also at least 30 Chinese state media employees working for ByteDance/TikTok, which are part of the same corporal web as the CEO admitted. 😊
