The US Senate has approved a controversial landmark bill that could see TikTok banned in America.
It gives TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, nine months to sell its stake or the app will be blocked in the United States.
The bill will now be handed over to US President Joe Biden, who has said he will sign it into law as soon as it reaches his desk. ByteDance has told the BBC that it did not have an immediate response to the move.

Instagram is owned by an American company, and is therefore beholden to American/Western advertisers who essentially fund it. This allows companies, and to a certain extent the government to pressure Instagram to adopt certain stances on issues. Look at what happened to Twitter to see the power advertisers hold over these companies. Tiktok doesn't have this problem, it's a Chinese app and is funded differently. All this bullshit about Tiktok's algorithm being harmful, the app being harmful etc is a distraction. Every modern social media app uses similar patterns and algorithms to hook users. The only thing that the US cares about is exerting control over the app.
