I am Chinese, currently residing in Shenzhen. Life is generally not as bad as Western Media makes it out. In fact, i live relatively comfortably here, cheap products and technology which works better than those of Apple, and very nice infrastructure. I honestly found it amusing when Americans discovered that China wasn’t as bad as it was when on Rednote. On the matter of child labour, i believe this problem is very prevalent everywhere, and cannot be solely placed on China. This includes the United States, which if I am also not mistaken, allows children in some areas as young as 12 to work. My point? Problems everywhere, and cannot be solely pinned on China.

the problem with banning tiktok to me isn't a "Freedom of speech" issue but that it's not a tiktok specific problem...i don't know if americans understand the difference in society..any chinese company will be obliged to give user data if the ccp tells them to hand it over. in the usa a company can fight it in the courts, but with the ccp it's just common sense to comply. so not sure what banning one app will do to protect a population.

These 'refugee runs' tend to be so very temporary and they always seem to collapse into a mini-disaster. 'Mastadon' gets rampaged and then they're gone. Then 'bluesky' but then that gets wrecked badly and forgotten etc. This one is weird because I don't think China's government foreign relations or Great Firewall people EVER expected this to happen and are surely freaked out and trying to figure out what to do besides selling some 'Americans confess China is superior and now grovel and beg to be taken in by China'. I dunno. On the upside, IF Red Note can grab this '15 minutes of fame' and do something then maybe they can translate it into some kind of a longer-lasting boost?
