I'm hearing shingle prices are going up 10% overnight; a guy will give a quote, customer calls him back the next day and he can't get shingles for the same price he quoted. And they still pay the new price, no questions asked. Customers are desperate for tradies that can do the dirty jobs they consider "beneath" them. If you voted Liberal, you voted for higher gas prices and global supply chains. I see no problem with them paying a premium on everything to make up for it.

I ran a business for 10 years and I charged different prices for different reasons. Contracts, negotiations, etc. are job specific and sometimes client specific. I increased prices and then discounted preferred clients. It's a free market, privately owned businesses can charge what they want if the demand is there. Ask anyone who needs a plumber how much they will pay when they are in need, they'll pay .

As a retired Plumber, that ran my own company, this is very true. I had a logbook I called the "Shit List". In the logbook, I kept a list of difficult customers, deadbeats, and straight up pains in the ass. All of my employees knew, how to deal with these types, if they were on call for the weekend, when they weren't dispatched by the office. I was even in contact back and forth with owners that I knew of other Plumbing and Heating companies, warning each other about problematic customers. I'm pretty sure that this is, and always has been, a pretty common practice.

We’re experiencing a similar situation. I believe some in the high income are so insulated from what’s going on they’re difficult to reach. They haven’t hit a pain point yet. Im a contractor in Michigan and I routinely do this as well. Not because of politics exclusively, although sometimes that factors in. Anywone that has a designer involved, is wishy washy, needs thier hand held, has the porential to be a karen or is a super lefty - they get 20-30% added on. My dad retained the handy man skills acquired on the farm and I regret not spending more time with him to pick up the same skills. Please don’t generalize with regards to urban dwellers, I for one have the utmost respect for farmers and continue to work with them in the work I do now. Second, be careful what you wish for in terms of mortgage rates. 20% would devastate innocent families and creat opportunities for greedy individuals which you are referring to giving them more power...that’s the last thing we need.

I have been a Roofer for 15 years. We have not seen pay increases in all the years I have done the trade. Everyone else gets a salary, benefits, 15% pay increase yearly, cheap insurance and easy living. We get to work in the hot sun, be dirty all day, deal with physical pain, barely put a roof over our own heads, no benefits, no salary, no appreciation, usually receiving the opposite, disdain. This guy knows how the real world works and I'm glad he is starting to take more. Should have started a long time ago.

Actually corporation can rarely do what this guy is doing because we live (mostly) in a market economy. What corporation do do on a regular basis is passing the increase cost doing business to the the lower echelon that being the producer to the manufacturer or to the distributer the retailer and finally the consumer" So 10¢ increase at the producer is 15¢ increase at the manufacturer etc and the consumer end up paying 30¢ more. Increase in the retailer's rent? Passed down to the end-user. This why I try to climb on top of the ladder. This is just the society we live in, it is called capitalism.

I own a small manufacturing business in Canada and we have a pretty good, long time account with a company that has become openly woke over the past handful of years and we do intentionally charge them more for the same product than we charge any of our other accounts for the same product. I dont think this is rare and is possibly even becoming a trend for many capitalist small businesses. They can pay for the inflation and rapidly rising shipping costs for all the rest of my customers.

This price-fluidity has been going on forever. It's just that this roofer said "Jags belong to Libs" which may or may not be true. But a lot of services get marked up by 15% if the estimator sees a jag in the yard. It's what the market will allow, that's all. I live in a neighborhood with fancy cars and houses. But it is a conservative neighborhood. Even so, if I need a plumber, roofer, electrician, etc, it’s always been my gut feeling that I’m being charged more just because of the houses and cars that are here. We just accept it. Probably should pop a Pierre Poilievre sign in the ground the next time I need to get my driveway sealed; just to ensure that I don’t get any extra fees tacked on to the price.

I dont think you could even say its price gouging. They have the right to refise your offer, and find someone else. On top of that, people of a certian type tend to make construction projects more difficult, which leads to higher costs. Demand outweighs supply, so the price goes up. Not to mention there is widespread labor and material shortages, and every company has different overhead and labor rates. So good luck trying to get that to stick.
