The difference in audio level between you and Mia is making it really hard to listen to this. Because when I bump the volume up to comfortably hear you, Mia is way too loud and when I adjust the volume so Mia is on a reasonable level, I can barely even hear your voice.

I was going to say the same thing. Also the difference between the interview and the ad-reads is harsh.

Survivor bias also plays a big part in the "old things used to be better" stuff. We don't have the millions (probably more) of wattle and daub buildings from history, but they served their purposes for the time and were cheap enough for some guy's family to build on their own, just weren't built to last because the didn't need to be.

This is a great format loving the first 2 episodes. I have found that the audio feels unbalanced like sometimes too loud or sometimes too quiet but I'm sure you'll work that out. Looking forward to the not just bikes episode!

If you are gonna post clips from these podcasts, please put them on a separate channel. Makes it easier to find the full episodes

Or at least post them as shorts - it can clutter/get lost in very busy subscription feeds.

In the southwest US there are really old Native American structures, often referred to as cliff dwellings, since they were usually built under a cliff overhang to provide natural shelter. These are a perfect example of just building up, and on top of already existing structures. Often they would get up to 3 or 4 stories, and potentially with another below the main floor that was used as a trash receptacle. During excavations they'd find these trash receptacles and they were basically archaeological gold mines, since they could find out a lot more about the civilization from the trash they produced. Things like broken pots, baskets, tools, etc. These structures are often hundreds of years old, made of stone, so it's really interesting to see that people haven't really changed all that much over time quite as significantly as we might've previously thought.

Awesome to see Mia! As always she was fascinating but as someone who'd watched her Tartaria vid already I would've liked to have heard a bit more about TikTok (or a different video title). Seconding the call someone else made about signposting the cut out clips more clearly - having watched the full eps, I was very confused when I clicked on the first one. But have really enjoyed both first episodes, and am looking forward to seeing what comes next!

There were some weird sound quality issues. Are you both recording your sound locally then bring them together to get the higher fidelity for the video itself?

This one is pretty okay, I wish you guys would have focused more on the TikTok part of it. Mia’s tartaria video is her own thing! I feel like you should have more of a focus on what your topic for the podcast is about. Love Mia! Love you! Just a little sad about where the focus of this one went

Love the concept! Glad to see this take off. However, I'll echo the sentiment from a few others: Tom you might want to train yourself to make sure you're speaking into the microphone because it gives a big different in volume between the speakers for the the podcast which can literally hurt your ears.

Needs playlists. One for full length episodes, and one or more (each episode getting its' own playlist of clips, or just one massive playlist with all clips), for clips. Edit: oh yeah, It's The Free One!

There's a tiktoker by the name miniminute man who does a really good job debunking archaology misinformation on tiktok by condensing academia into quick soundbites that work on the platform. I don't know how convincing a believer of these theories would find it but it might stop some people from falling down this rabbit hole in the first place

Repost with corrected audio, a bus compression or auto leveling etc. Mia is fine you are silent to the point that I will wait for update which I'm sure people are clicking away for. Great stuff though.

this is my conclusion now: every person that identifies with any group can become obsessive and unhinged under the wrong circumstances. TikTok has developed the perfect virtual environment to replicate those circumstances to either enable or cause those more prone to obsessive behavior to become unhinged. That's how they make engagement happen in their site for the most part, and that's why people get pushed to those weird rabbit holes from tik tok rather quickly.

I spent about three minutes on TikTok. I got about two minutes of really lame "relatable Irish humor" because I guess all it had to go on was my country, and then immediately I started getting a bunch of local far-right thugs ranting about immigrants and quickly deleted the app

I actually think the algorithm is pretty clunky. At least on an individual level. Also, this double down on the way a story is presented is why I can't stay on it very long. The energy almost feels like a shot of energy. It's interesting. But It makes me very viscerally uncomfortable. I post, stay on maybe 5 minutes, and then go. It used to show me new stuff but doesn't anymore.

Man, this could really use a bit more polish. I would love a small introduction of the guest aswell as guiding the conversation through some open ended questions maybe? I will stay subbed & try again in like 10 episodes. For the moment, it feels too much like random bar chatter.

I am really enjoying this show. However I am somehow unable to subscribe to the channel. I tried three times but whenever i go back to the channel i am unsubscribed again... idk if this is a problem on my side or with the channel. Also: i'd love to subscribe to nebula but last i checked you needed a credit card to sign up - which i don't have. Though I suppose creators don't have a say in that.

Enjoying so far Tom thanks - BUT .. I 'section off' about an hour a day (usually lunch) to catch-up on 'useful' or fun vids .. 5mins to 20mins are ideal - on x2 I can pretty much watch most stuff - and fill in over weekend as needed (like homework !! sad but true) ... 1hr13mins was GREAT for your infrequent major stuff but is going to be REALLY tough for these (thankfully) more regular vids - or will you 'always' section them up like this mia one? praps give such 'sectioned' ones same name but 'pt1, pt2' etc - plus the 'omnibus' - like east enders 🙂

I do have a strong resentment to Taylor Swift tho. But I think it comes solely from the fact that it reminds me of neoliberalism. It's technically well produced, but soulless. It's like marvel, or other blockbuster films. It's like triple A games. I have the broadest taste in music, DJed for 10 years, produced for 5. There must be a reason I have such an adverse reaction to a fucking pop artist. But I think it reminds me of capitalism... I don't like capitalism.

I like your regular videos and I like the concept of this but the execution is very much lacking. Clipping and very poorly balanced audio feel pretty insulting alongside ad breaks and patreon pitch. A podcast is very low effort content compared to your usual high production value, tightly scripted videos. I'd like you to put a little more effort into the podcast before making sure it's monetised.

Thanks for the note about the audio. Undertaking any new project is always a learning process and so we're working on fixing these things going forward! Unfortunately, both these podcasts and the main channel videos cost quite a bit of money to make and so monetising them in some way is necessary. We've managed to do so in a way that doesn't stop anyone from accessing any of the episodes but does allow folks who are super keen to support if they wish.
