So let me get this strait. Someone objects to terms that are gendered or mischaracterize a group of people or over generalize. So they then create a new term to describe a group of people that really have almost nothing in common anyway. If you genuinely object to labels that simply don't fit well then stop trying to label groups. When there is systemic racism it may be necessary to label groups for the purposes of trying to deal with the issue, but in almost all other cases creating such groups just makes systemic divisions worse. You are essentially placing people in a group based on their appearance and judging them accordingly which is inherently racist and the very same thing as you appear to be fighting against when objecting to gendered terms which similarly put people into groups for the purpose of prejudgement.

People who made latinx have no conception of how Spanish works. Latino isn’t even gendered in actuality as it’s different from English. Latino can mean he or they while latina solely refers to wahmen. Spanish is an inherently “gendered” (words ending in a ‘masculine O’ or ‘feminine A”) language because it’s a Romance language and not Germanic. By implementing the “x”, something which may make sense in the English perspective, you are being inherently ignorant of Spanish’s roots and culture by trying to shove your culture onto another’s, thereby washing away that part of a language and replacing it with your own. Doing it is actually more ignorant than politically correct/‘woke’ in that case. Normally I would be classified somewhat as one of the ‘woke’ folk by others with my world views but even I see this as absolutely stupid as a person on the wrong side of twitter.

Both Latino and Hispanic are terms regarding language, not origin. Latinoamericano means that your from the American continent and you speak a Latin derived language, for instance, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. Hispanoamericano means you're from the American continent and you speak Spanish. So all Hispanic are Latinos, but not all Latinos are Hispanic. Now, if you speak Spanish, you know that while most of the times the last vowel determines the gender or nature of the word, this is not an absolute. For instance, AGUA (water) is a gender neutral word. In its singular form you add the male EL before it (el agua) in its plural for you add the female LAS before it (las aguas) Latinoamerica is the same, even though it ends with an a, the proper pronoun is EL, not LA. So Latino is actually a gender neutral term. Also, just like Latina is a female version of Latino, Latine would be a male version of Latino, so that term would not be ideal to use for a non-binary gender. In Spanish, if you want to use a genderless version and refuse to use Latino, then LATÍN, would be the best option.
@zepedro66663 жыл бұрын
Finally someone knows what Latino means. It means ONLY that: language origins, that's it. I'm Portuguese living in Portugal and in Europe we are referred to belong to the Latin people and everyone knows the reason for it, because of the language. In terms of races we in Europe, specially in south, have traces from various people like Greeks, Italians, North of Africa (Mahgreb), French, German, Scandinavian, a big melting pot. Americans tends to confuse everything. Latin people in Europe: Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Romenia.

Latine is as bad as latinx, it erases cultural diversity because the 3 romance languages in latino america would sound basically the same when changing every gendered word to end with e, it also would bring up a lot of new rules and exceptions of these rules making these languages inconsistent. And with the fact that the masculine gender already englobes the gender neutral words (ustedes, for example is technically a masculine word) i don't see any reason for this change Both the French and Spanish authorities on the language already denied the change and i, as a Brazilian, really hope that the Portuguese authority on the language do the same

Logical fallacy appeal to authority. Spain has no authority on how Latin Americans use Spanish. Just like how Americans flipped off the British by removing the u in “colour,” Latin American countries can just… ignore Spain. Also no one’s saying, “stop using gendered terms.” They literally just want a non gendered suffix to be added. I don’t see the problem with using another vowel to indicate gender neutrality. It's an odd one the way these terms have developed. I'm not 100% sure on this myself (so if I get anything wrong, feel free to correct me) but from what I understand the term Latino was popularised in America anyway, and in Latin American countries it's not as commonly used. As for Latino/Latina, from what I understand there's a difference between 'masculine' language and gender identity so the term Latino is applicable to men, women and anyone else to describe a person of Latin American origin anyway. It doesn't seem many Latinos use the term 'Latinx' (which I always seem to read as 'latex'... not sure if there's anything subconscious going on there, but ok) and many seem to be annoyed by it because it doesn't have much basis in the language, and it's not a good look for left wingers in general because of this...

The Filipine islands got that name bacause of Philip II (Felipe II) of Spain. If the conquerors made the same that they did in the "New World" and mixed marriages weren't explicitly prohibited, then "Las Filipinas" are full of "mestizos" just like all LatAm is. We are mixed Hispanic and Native, almost 95% our population, maybe in different proportions individually or other ethinities joint after the Conquest era, but it still the same origin for the last five centuries.
@ghostknight20112 жыл бұрын
By, the way, No, We don't "latinx" and the wrong term "latine" is just used by an arrogant and sectarian minority. If you investigate more deep you'll find that our language is indeed gendered, but we use male and female terms for many general concepts, and some neutrals even have gender because of female/male articles we put before them.

Silver lining is we are as a society able to identify as whatever we want no matter how ridiculous it is.... the great tragedy of our society is that we put way too much energy into trying to define how unique we are without actually trying to promote actual social change.

I love the “you’re a colonize!” stuff. Hey, do you know the Aztecs are not from central Mexico? That they migrated there, wiped the tribe who was already there from the face of the earth and then conquered the other tribes and ran a Auschwitz level death cult? Aren’t they “colonizers” as well?

I have asked dozens of latinos and hispanic people about this they hate it. They find the term raciist imperialism more or less. Latine makes more sense from a language perspective for non binary. However they should drive their culture not white english speakers forcing woke terminology on them. Respect other peoples culture.

I can hear the "murica, fock yeah" over the distance... The thing with "Latinx" or "Latine" is that by placing so much emphasis on being inclusive and trying not to be racist or transphobic or whatever, you end up being... kinda racist. It is kinda like entering a room with your friends, all of them are girls, except for James. So how do you greet them? Because if you go for the inclusive route and say "Oh hi girls, AND JAMES" You think you are including James and being such a good person... but you kinda just treated James like he is Really different and just WITH the group for just some time. Instead, if you just say "Oh hi girls." You end up actually making everyone comfortable because Even Though James isn't a girl and doesn't identify as one, he is PART of the group, of wich the majority are girls, so he isn't treated as different and you don't place emphasis on him. When you don't try so hard to be the better person that proves world wrong, then you are friendly, chill, and most importantly, actually treat people well.
