To me this is just a classic case of an owner getting butthurt over a review. And maybe it’s just me, but one bad review isn’t enough to stop me from visiting a place of business (unless it’s extenuating circumstances of course) but an overly emotional and unprofessional response from an owner absolutely will. We all know negative reviews suck especially when you put your heart and soul into it only for some random person to take a sh*t all over it. But a good business owner will accept the feedback and strive to make improvements. Not argue about whether bread is stale or not and give us some random excuse about strawberries. The only time I’ve ever agreed with a company responding to a negative review is that famous response of a customer complaining about their order being taken on the phone and the person hanging up then when they showed up the food wasn’t ready. But the employee like literally had a seizure or something and when the customer showed up the ambulance was currently there taking care of the employee (or something like this, this is from awhile ago so my memory probably has details wrong). The customer still posted a shitty review completely omitting the medical emergency taking place and made it seem like shitty service and the owner basically was like “I still offered to make your order when you showed up while the ambulance was at our store but you refused, a medical emergency takes priority over an order” though much more professionally.

Queen of Afternoon Tea did a very fair review. I went through the videos on TikTok and it does look like Queen of Afternoon Tea did sell her tea house last year and it reopened this year under new ownership, the website most likely forgot to update the about us section. Looking at the mall floor map and learning what previous shops were in the location The Cupcake Cafe is at, it appears that there is no actual kitchen on site and lacks ventilation for an oven, meaning the food is not made on the premises. That receipt that was shown was clearly from a regular grocery store.

as a previous self employed cake decorator, an honest and true review was to me. a lot of people stay quiet when they receive bad service or products and that's not conducive to a good business. if someone says to me (they have) "the cake was a little dry but edible. it looked beautiful but something was a little off." i can avoid it in the future and improve. i told my client, I apologize and sincerely thank you for the truth. And then offer another cake for the honoree or future discount at least. people forget it's brave to push back on people who ain't doing you right. they deserve your respect.

'cuz if not, it makes the store owner's claim look sus. also, not a bread expert, but i used to help my mom's women's group do catering my mom took up break making during lockdown. that bread is dry. there's two reasons for it. reason one: it wasn't as fresh as the owner is saying. reason 2: they made everything morning of and then let it all sit out. this would also explain why the strawberries went bad over night, they weren't stored correctly. or checked when first brought in to make sure that they were all good

As for the comments left for her and the reviews, I think unless she can show proof... which wouldn't be hard to do, that likely it was a very small few going out on their own to do so. People online can be vicious. Do I think the Cafe owner over-reacted to try to call her out and claim she had anything to do with the negative backlash? Absolutely, it doesn't matter if she is an owner of a competitive tea shop. She's allowed to have an opinion. Whether you agree with it or not because it effects you... is YOUR problem.

I'd only seen one video on this before watching Markie's take, and it made no sense to me until now. Someone asked the owner of the bakery why they didn't substitute a cupcake for the strawberry instead of another savory item, and their response was basically "why would we give away something that we sell?" That speaks volumes to me, because you're not just giving it away for free...you're correcting a mistake that your shop made. If they were only offered another savory item and didn't want it after seeing the state of the ones they'd already been brought, why not offer something else?
