Yeah, I am not installing that. I understand the dangers of this short content. It is designed to hijack your dopamine and keep you scrolling for hours with your brain turned off. Like once every 20 videos you see something actually interesting. I much rather choose the content I watch, see the length of a video and know the time commitment required to watch it. These Tik Tok kids just scroll through algorithm generated content 12 hours a day.

Checking their kid's social media? Too much work. From time to time getting involved in the online games their kid plays to see the people they interact with? Too much work, and the list could go on. I've seen even housewives that don't have a job say this things. Every era has different challenges for parenthood and the online space is the one in 2023, but we can't expect everyone to be concerned about kids that aren't theirs, its not fair. And that's not even to mention child predation on the platform. Upper Echelon covered this a while ago, but you'd have streams hosted by underaged girls where predators use coded or indirect language to get them to go off platform, and/or perform suggestive acts for them. I've also heard of plenty of TikTok trends where people splice in illegal content to what they're doing, like gore videos, child porn, or the like. Due to TikTok's nature, you're bound to get pretty screwed up stuff. And unlike KZbin, TikTok is designed to funnel you through short-form content quickly that's usually just for humor or some other general purpose. I can watch a long-form gaming video on KZbin, and get recommended other long-form gaming videos in the same subject space. However, what do you get recommended when you watch some short-form joke or meme? Even on KZbin, if you watch meme content not tied to a specific franchise (e.g., memes about a new game or something) you're going to go down a rabbit hole where you get random videos that are hard to search for, yet somehow get quite a few views.

That probably because of all the rules and regulations when children are involved. For instance if you say you are advertising to children there's a ton more red tape compared to saying you advertise to adults. And then there's issue of collecting data on children. Legally sites like KZbin or tiktok aren't suppose to collect data from children. So showing a graph with that data can get them in hot water. In short, THINK OF THE CHILDREN. joke aside it's a very murky area that effectively force these companies to basically pretend children don't exist on their site.

@DarthDragmire
@DarthDragmire Жыл бұрын
In some ways it may be harder, but being a good parent is being an active parent. In their younger years it’s not hard to be a part of their social life and maintain some sort of control over what content they’re allowed to consume. As they approach adolescence parental controls on their devices are easy to set up, and imo if they have the intelligence to figure their way around that, they probably have the maturity to consume certain content. The problem is a lot of parents just hand their children smartphones or tablets and let them entertain themselves without taking an active role in their kids’ leisure time.

@8:00, I agree to an extent with you that parents far too often don't take accountability for overseeing what theirs kids interact with or how they act. But I don't think this absolves platforms of any responsibility. If you don't have some top-down rules enforced by these platforms, you're punishing the kids who don't have good parents/don't have parents at all.

@@whenimmanicimgodly4228 I guess we can agree to disagree on what ‘punishing the world’ means. I think given how toxic social media in general has been for the world, proper regulation of the content on it is pretty important and has widespread benefits for everyone. What exactly do you think the big benefit for society is from having kids be exposed to sexual content, red-pill bullshit and divisive liberal and conservative propaganda constantly? And how do you see things going in the future? Do you want the platforms to have no obligation to limit deepfakes, hateful and sexual content, especially when it’s being shown to children? The parents aren’t being punished for their lack of oversight, it’s the kid who’s being influenced by the content. It will disproportionally affect kids who arent lucky enough to have parents who actually supervise the content they’re consuming. Really don’t understand your point. My solution is not punishing the world. I’m fairly pro most content being allowed on these platforms, but I’m not pro it being shown to kids.

what shorts does for youtube is essentially bring over people that only really like shorts as well as expose people that like longform to see shorts. The shorts people come to like certain creators for their shorts and might consider watching a few of their longer videos sometimes as a kind of easement into the ad cycle. What it does for the longform people is to expose them to as many creators in a short amount of time, giving them more options for viewing. All in all win win, and i know that i discovered a lot of creators through this. It's not profitable, but its kind of worth having.

As an advertising professional, I can add a few thoughts here: 1. Some advertisers do actually ignore TikTok because of concerns about their brand image, but I see more and more companies adopting the platform every year, so you can‘t really say that „companies just don‘t want to advertise there“. 2. The fact that the Chinese TikTok is bringing in more revenue has nothing to do with the narrowness of the audience; I can specifically target any country I want on the worldwide version of TikTok. I am not sure about this, but I believe the data protection policies are way less strict in China, making the targeting of ads much more reliable and effective to get more $$$ out of the same amount of ads delivered. 3. TikTok ads being limited to 60 sec and under is not really different from other, well-established advertising platforms. Like FB & IG Reels & Stories. Making ads for that format is super normal.

The problem for large companies is that they are publicly traded and have shareholders. Any "bad" representation of the brand have the opportunity to bring the stock down and respectively lead to a loss to the shareholders. The deal after all is: "We have that brand that has products that do this and that. Give us loads of money and in return you'll be able to make loads of money + 3% yearly". Guess what, nobody will give their money if they know they're loosing it.
