Tile Gasketing To Improve Spoilboard Vacuum Hold On CNC Routers

Tile Gasketing is a newer product that provides a great option for Nested Base and short-run and custom parts. These tiles will cover an entire porous MDF surface, creating thousands of mini suction cups to hold parts. When customers are doing Nested Base Manufacturing, but want to the benefit of vacuum clamping, these tiles are the solution. Not only will they create vacuum clamps to hold the sheets, but it prevents vacuum leak from occurring through the channels of an exposed spoilboard. An improved vacuum hold-down system in an ever-changing job environment is why the users of this item make it a part of their Nested Base Manufacturing process. The product, just like all of the gasketing products, can vary in both thickness and density, to fit each customer’s unique set of variables. Not all users are attempting to hold the same substrates.

Hi Mike - so does the gasket deal with inevitable shallow cuts - I find the MDF compresses and expands due to moisture over time leading to a need to relevel the bed (though I am using Ultralite MDF - which may be worse). Will it tolerate that a little bit. I mean I know its a consumable at the end of the day but just wondering how consumable.

Graham- Yes, at the end of the day, this is a consumable product. Just like a spoilboard would be. So the inevitable shallow cuts into the Tile Gasketing will happen. But these shallow cuts will still produce vacuum seal as long as the gasketing that remains still creates a defined edge from which we can draw the air from. This creates the vacuum clamp, the sealed edge. But when one tile gets to the point it is no longer creates proper seal, we replace the one tile with another. This prevents the need to fly-cut the spoilboard and/or reset the Z depth after fly cutting. Any questions please feel free to reach out.

Would you expect similar performance with this to a phenolic table top? I assume with the advantage that you're product is a consumable and a phenolic top isn't meant to be due to cost.

The Tile Gasket product sits on top of the spoilboard that sits atop of the vacuum bed. Users should never be cutting directly on a phenolic bed, that's what the spoilboard is intended for - to be carved into and "spoiled".

How come they didn't cut through the tiles?

Ziyad- The Z depth is adjusted slightly to just kiss the gasket. It does chew it up over time. It depends on the operator. The gasket still performs as it should be it is chewed up a bit. What about the air leakage from the sides?

We recommend sealing the edge. It's small leakage, but every area can count. We have a product known as "Edge Tape"to help seal rather than using caulking or other liquid based sealants and having to wait to dry.
