Using "super" for all windows operations - AMAZING!!!! Finally. I always wanted this to be the default for all Linux distros. And this is the first thing I do when on a fresh installation. It seems that most window manager authors do not use any other software except window manager itself so do not care about conflicts with application shortcuts.

As a veteran Windows "ricer" having recently made the plunge into Linux, I'm never going back unless I'm helping family or friends with their systems. That being said, I'm absolutely in love with how customizable and functional Linux is (running Arch on this machine and Debian on my other). I've spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with i3 and I'm always learning new things between configuration files and manual scripting. I don't understand at all why people don't think you can have a very visually appealing desktop and functionality at the same time. Thank you for the great video, and sharing what you've got, Keep it up. Easy sub from me

Not to sound condescending, but how exactly do you rice windows?
@joejett62346 жыл бұрын
It's incredibly easy, but not as resource friendly as linux. Rainmeter, StartIsBack, ObjectDock and BlackBox are my preferred programs, but there are loads out there and Chloe Chantelle has a great guide on other photo viewers, window managers, tiling programs, etc. www.ricing.chloechantelle.com/
@joejett62345 жыл бұрын
@Grey Fox Mishima I apologise, I didn't mean to throw complex non-elitist concepts your way and confuse you. Ricing isn't limited to Linux, and the term doesn't even come from desktop customizing, it originated in the street racing community. It is exactly as it sounds, I've been ricing Windows (an operating system) for very many years, long before I jumped into Linux. I love Linux much better and only use Windows to game with nowadays, but that doesn't mean there aren't countless ways to customize Windows. Even without Rocketdock and Rainmeter, you still have Gridview, Startisback, Vivaldi, Winaerotweaker, Blackbox and DirectoryOpus and that's just the beginning.

Hi Luke, just discovered your channel and your videos are super helpful! I've been using linux as my primary OS for about 8 years now, been using arch since 3 years. I always wanted to use a tiling windows manager since I've seen people's workflow become super fast, but your video actually helped me make the jump from cinnamon to i3. I'm still new to "everything-vim-based" but I'm definitely finding it interesting. After each update my HDD usage grows by a small percentage but I don't really do anything apart from clearing the package cache (pacman -Scc). Mainly I cannot distinguish what programs I need and which ones to -R. If possible, can you make a video on general-maintenance of an arch system? I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate that.

I agree ^ - also for anyone using LARBS always double check arch wiki/forums for any threads pertaining to your specific laptop. I have a Dell XPS 15 and had to do quite a bit of extra work to get everything working. Went from 5hrs battery life on Windows to ~11hrs with Arch+LARBS - undervolting the processor and disabling the discrete GPU. wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T420#Media_Keys If you're still stumped - I'm pretty sure you can just patch it and insert two new lines: bindsym $mod+whatever exec --no-startup-id xbacklight -dec 5 and that should work eh.
Why would you always want to see every window at the same time? How do you navigate webpages? Still got to grab your mouse I guess (or do a ridiculous amount of tabbing). So doesn't it end up being the same that a regular WM? If 90% of your work is done on a console fine, otherwise I don't see how it could improve workflow. I am a developer, and my day goes from IntelliJ, to Firefox, to Thunderbird (I get to answer emails), to console, to Postman, etc. I would be really annoying having to use a tiling window manager I guess.
@GAMasterMedo6 жыл бұрын
mouse? nope, navigating webpages: cvim (or alternatives), tabbing? nope, idk, even when using intelliJ, why use a built in shitty console when you can feel right at home with the one you customized. You can always let it take up a bottom 20% of the screen when you need it and full-screen over it. When using the browser you sometimes need to compare 2 websites/console output/uncloned repos so you pop up 2 browsers on the same workspace and tile them left-right or up-down depending on the layout

Congratulation for such a beautiful and efficient system! Although, as you've shown, you use the Super key as Mod for i3 as I do. However, I find it hard to press with my thumb in an efficient (without leaving the home row) and healthy way (without weirdly bending my thumb), but at the same time, I can't think of a better key since Super is so System focused. So here goes my question, how do you press that inconvenient key? Have you thought about using a keyboard with thumb clusters (Keyboardio, ErgoDoxEZ, Diverge)?

I don't really think about how I press it. Nowadays, I map Caps Lock to function as escape if pressed and super if held though, so that might make it easier. The program xcape will help you do that.
