I feel like each man in the story saw her as a different trope or stereotype if that makes any sense? Like her husband saw her as a trophy wife. Tom saw her as a woman in need of a man to save her. Her attacker saw her as a bitch who relished fucking up his life. His brother saw her as a victim. Meanwhile, no one saw her as a whole woman with her own personality, desires, fears, and dreams. She was just an empty vessel for whatever they decided she must want and need.

@Dina Choudhury I feel part of what you're saying a bit, but I think it's also definitely cathartic for a lot of women to see! :) I know my gf, mom and sister all enjoy seeing shitty men get beat by women some times. Like how my black friend and his parents felt empowered when they saw Django Unchained.
@NotAnotherKuromi
@NotAnotherKuromi 3 жыл бұрын
@Dina Choudhury No that isn't what everyone would see. Not everyone oversimplifies people or situations. It is possible to aknowledge one aspect of a person while not reducing the person down to that alone. Similarly you can see somone as a victim but also a multidimensional person, strengths included. Sure it could have been a sister instead of a brother, or a female attacker as well as a man but they would still be ignorantly skimming the surface of the main characters full, deep, rich, multifaceted personality.
@kiram.3619
@kiram.3619 3 жыл бұрын
@Dina Choudhury They are not wrong in seeing that aspect of her, they are wrong in reducing her to it. The brother sees her as a victim, sure, but what would stop him for also seeing her as a bad*ss person? She did escape them & fight them off for quite some time. The affair partner wants to "save" her, but he could instead want to "help" her. There is a subtle but very important difference there & she seemed quite calm, collected and way more rational than him in that situation. The attacker could take accountability for his own actions?! He could see her as a person, could see her trauma, her problematic relationship with her husband, since he knows the husband arranged this. He could accept his own mistakes, thereby perceive them both as people, who collided in circumstances that ended bad for him. Or way simpler, he could acknowledge her fighting capability as more than her being a b*tch, could acknowledge her fear, her scars, her perseverance. It's so easy. Plus: Men aren't mindless animals like bulls who charge without a thought, whenever they see their "red cloth" that aggravates them. They can, think, they ca choose. It's not usual that they come out of prison and run to their victim whose case got them in. That would be so stupid. They either try to life their life (still criminal or reformed) or go after police, judges, the lawyers etc.. Only the weirdest obsessed once would go after their previous victims with no plans and an obvious connection. Now the husband: he has the least right to reduce her to any role or stereotype. He knew her for years, knew her trauma, her dreams, etc.. Still he only saw her as a trophy and when she cheated he didn't consider his own affairs, didn't consider her a person, only thought about how to hurt & harm her the most. -> So all the men had ample opportunity to see her, instead of seeing only themselves and what role she had in their narration of their own story. And it's not *because* they are men. They just are men. And it makes sense for them to be men. Most couples are heterosexual, most violent criminals are men. It would be weird to forcefully shove another woman into that, just to appease some people. (On the contrary: if the attacker had a sister, the same people complaining about the depiction of men in this movie now, would call the sisters actions compassion & fear driven, instead of rational & self preserving. Therefor starting the complaint that 'of course it is only the woman who sees the other woman as a person worth rescuing, not just reducing her'. Even though that need not be true, it's the same actions as brother as as sister. It's just that how we look into the world, we will perceive it.) She is not just a victim, a damsel, a b*tch or a trophy. And it's not necessary to see her as that. The commenter brings this point of the movie up quite well..

I never understood why Megan Fox wasn't glamorized like Angelina Jollie. I want a movie where is a badass assassin, spy or straight up a superhero or hero enemy like Poison Ivy! OMG!! Morgan Fox &Margot Robbie! straight up goals!!
@khaxjc1
@khaxjc1 3 жыл бұрын
My worry with a superhero type thing especially a character like poison ivy is that I think it would just pull in too many of the assholes who just want to sexualize her and have her fit a mold, both in front of screens and behind the scenes. Id much rather have her play a character that tempted someone with a kiss but bashed them on the head before they could, instead of one with so many years being portrayed a temptress who uses drug laced kisses. But maybe like a deadpool superhero kind of role where its mostly comedy and not serious? Where characters are first and foremost expected to be funny? Maybe I could see her making that work. Weirdly specifically I kind of want her to be the glamorous big sister who travels the world and is resented for being "perfect" then break the mold and expectations as she turns out to be an unremorseful assassin or spy or thief who brings trouble home. I think she could rock that. Pair her with the right actress for a sister, have some action, some dark comedy, some female banter and complicated relationships, play around with breaking some tropes. It could be a lot of fun. Also wouldnt mind seeing her do something that involves twisting the lone female survivor trope.
@sockgoblin2942
@sockgoblin2942 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe instead of poison ivy, she could be Andrea Beaumont, if the character ever gets a live action interpretation. I think she would be a great poison ivy, but poison ivy has been noted in past to be mostly sex appeal…. Maybe she could be an original character!

If I remember correctly it took a long while for Hollywood to take Jolie seriously either (especially during the period where she was doing things like wearing her boyfriend's blood in a necklace to the Oscars). She has always dominated the screen, and directors did not like that when they wanted her to be deuteragonist or side character (especially to male costars), or or victim, or villain, where she honestly was regularly amazing IMO.) She was not a vulnerable presence onscreen,ever, early on, which was held against her when she was younger. Later she was allowed to explore more range, and her dad was Jon Voight, which gave her an advantage Fox didn't have, I don't think, but Jolie's early days were rocky and I don't think she was always well treated or well cast.

Sometimes, I think people think something “isn’t realistic behavior” in fictional women characters because it isn’t what they normally and consistently see in media and fiction. But what we typically see isn’t actually realistic behavior or motivations in women. I’ve spent most of my life as an actress trying to make sense out of plot choices and dialogue that is soooo NOT what most women I know would really do, and trying to justify and portray “authentically” this material that feels like someone put real women into the Google translate box multiple times. It almost makes sense, but just not quite? But when that weird translation of femininity is what’s seen over and OVER it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of what we expect, and something truly honest feels unfamiliar and phony instead.

It even won some award but no character is relatable or likeable in this movie. I also feel like...there's times when I'm stressed and emotionally at my limit and I just don't even quite recognize my own behavior? It's not like I'm out of control or anything. It's more like I'm at my limit, I'm in a situation I've never been in before, and I get that I'm not reacting typically or "how I should" act, but it doesn't really matter? Like I don't have time to process my feelings first before doing something. I just have to do it and deal with the fallout later and do the best to not do something I'll regret, even though it feels unreasonable as you do it. It's not exactly like you are unleashing your emotions... more like your mind is dissociated from your actions and emotions. So sometimes... it doesn't matter if it's not "realistic" or "authentic" to anyone because it doesn't feel like it's authentic to you when you are experiencing it yourself even in the moment of being a witness to your own actions. I can't imagine who could do that experience in film justice as well as Satoshj Kon but...well maybe it's in Paranoia Agent? Idk, Perfect Blue kinda touches on the possibility but then the ending shows a different reality. Anyways point is, sometimes you don't know what is an authentic reaction until you've truly lived that moment yourself and realize your instincts or emotions influence your behavior way differently than you thought.

Damn honestly given what Megan's character's going thru it feels to me mostly like she's not only done but she's also working through shock, like, her ex was abusive and controlling, then he literally blew his brains out infront of her after chaining her to himself, and she's fighting for her life. Not everyone reacts to threats the same way, and not everyone will be hysteric and crying when faced with their attacker. As someone who's been abused for years of my life physically and mentally and was even attacked when almost home, I get really numb when it gets too much for me and break down after. Megan Fox's performance really spoke to me that way, wether intentionally or not, and I think she's so much better than she's given credit for usually.

@Onyx Nite It seems that you’re ignoring the trauma and problems that come with being in an abusive relationship. Yes, in America it is easy to get a divorce. However, for many it’s hard to find the strength to actually get a divorce. Many people with long term abusive partners being to believe they deserve what is happening to them, some don’t have support systems that they can trust or talk to, some are afraid that their partner may harm someone they love, and plenty more other things that can occur in someone’s mind or life while in an abusive relationship. These situations aren’t easy. They are not black and white. If you are simply just miserable in your marriage and are in a position where all aspects of your life and the lives of the ones you care for are safe, yeah go ahead get that divorce. But we need to understand that isn’t a luxury every person has.

@Onyx Nite You have a very simplistic view of the issue, I am in a country with similar problems to the OP, maybe is the same country and here is simple to divorce in the legal sense too, the difficulties comes with abusive and violent partners (they exist in the US too), with societal expectations, economic or emotional dependency, abusive people tend to separate their partners from their friends and family , they tend to prey onto more vulnerable people with self steem issues or mental health problems, sometimes people have children and they are trying to do what they think is best, most of the time is complicated and leaving isn't so easy.

@Onyx Nite you must never of been married. It CAN be easy to get divorced but more often than not it isn’t. If people are getting divorced they’re not really working together and agreeing on things. For an easy divorce in America both people have to agree. If you can’t agree then it’s a long drawn out and expensive situation. One many can’t actually afford. And someone can force you to remain married to them simply by not signing the divorce agreement. You may think it’s easy to get divorced but it really isn’t. And that’s not even counting mental trauma.

@@bluester7177 people THINK it’s easy to get divorced in the United States because we have what’s called no-fault divorce. Where one person doesn’t have to have done something horrific to cause a divorce. But what people don’t seem to understand is that no-fault divorce means that the two people don’t like each other anymore. And for a no-fault divorce to go easily that you actually have to agree on the divorce terms. That’s why it seems like American divorce is so easy. Because if the two people can write up a contract that they agree on it is easy. But most divorcing people can’t do that. Because they’re angry with each other and don’t want to work on things. "if this had been the style of work she received early in her career, she'd definitely have more notoriety." That's the problem though: she was not a good actress early in her career. She ruined her reputation early on and it wasnt because Hollywood was biased against her because "sex appeal". Because you have to AUDITION for roles, it's more likely that she was often rejected OR she chose the "sexy exposition lady" roles on her own accord (Jennifer's Body is the exception...the marketing was pretty misleading). Btw, ever heard of Scarlett Johansson? She was once a runner up for Maxim's Sexiest woman of the year. Obviously she has "sex appeal"; perhaps even more than Megan. Not to mention she's only a year older than Megan, both had been acting since they were children, hell, ScarJo's only an inch shorter. Yet, somehow, Scarett has starred in movies like Her, A Marriage Story, and Lost in Translation. So why is it that ScarJo always got all the good roles? Maybeee it's because Megan was never "pretty damn good" until recently??

Like I'm gonna be real, the character Emma is bland as hell, so it was like actually amazing that she lives by Fox's performance alone. Like I so wish the script actually called for Emma to become more and more unbound -and like, the dialogue didn't do much- but this whole cold fury that only flashes through the movie on top of that initial almost dead on the inside really makes me appreciate how much Megan brought to the role. The movie itself is well constructed TBH, it's a tight limited setting/home invasion sort of deal, and consistent enough that I didn't feel the characters were dumb -safe for the "Emma there's a lot of glass around you can get creative" thing. For me it was the characterization all around what just wasn't really strong, but Fox's jaded and frustrated turn just made it work surprisingly well with the cold setting.

i guess from the perception that, "oh narcissists love themselves too much!" which am sure anyone who's had to deal with actual narcissists would know is only a small part of their, uhh, ""personality"" but anyone else might be clueless to it ig. my grandmother is potentially a narcissist and she's harmed herself multiple times solely to place the blame on us. no suicide threats or attempts yet but i also wouldn't be surprised if someday she'll escalate to that.

Agreed. I think part of it might be the stigma that people tend to think of a person as there "disease" and so don't consider there could be more than one issue. Depression or attention seeking aligns in there minds with suicide as a symptom. But narcissists are narcissists, and of course if someone has cancer they would be healthy otherwise, and so on and s forth. Probably doesnt help that if someone is shown to have a condition in fiction its usually that characters like THING defining them, is important to the plot, or the butt of the joke. Too often character aren't allowed to be complicated in those real messing ways that are hard for an outsider or casual viewer to understand. And mental health and disability portrayals are so often about the outsiders and not the reality.

“One of the obstacles to recognizing chronic mistreatment in relationships is that most abusive men simply don’t seem like abusers. They have many good qualities, including times of kindness, warmth, and humor, especially in the early period of a relationship. An abuser’s friends may think the world of him. He may have a successful work-life and have no problems with drugs or alcohol. He may simply not fit anyone’s image of a cruel or intimidating person. So when a woman feels her relationship spinning out of control, it is unlikely to occur to her that her partner is an abuser.” - Lundy Bancroft

I think its not entirely fair to say people just don't appreciate her case she's pretty. Plenty of people can see talent past looks. I think the real issue is the roles she's had that were most viewed by the public and the direction she's gotten on set for those roles, plus a splattering of people going into it thinks she's bad and bias making them only see at. People blame her for bad acting, and there are times she has given pretty lack luster performances, but she's proven she can act which means it's probably something with those roles. Either writing or direction. Plenty of other times we've seen know to be good actors do poorly in roles and its revealed to be because of what those behind the scenes wanted. We see it in tv alot. An actor has an ep where the character just feels wrong and it usually turns out they said as much but the director ignored them. People have it in their brains thinks to media pushing that idea that she is bad, so they dont think to look at it objectively that she can have had some bad roles without being a bad actress. Some of it is definitely a pretty issue though. Petty and close minded people are petty and close minded but they aren't the majority in this case.

"I feel like someone who's that narcissistic would never actually be able to end their life." Damn, you are a lucky human to have never heard of John Geddert.

Just started watching it, but a goof I’d like to point out is that when Emma is following the candles & flower petals, she secures the chain lock on the door, but in the next shot the chain is dangling & the door looks unlocked.

I was very confused by the trailers, thought her character was supposed to be some type of badass that hunts down sexual predators by seducing them then killing them. Don’t ask how I got that, I don’t think I paid enough attention to it. OHHHH HEYYY guess what, turns out that’s the other movie that she’s in that’s coming out, I’m stupid.

The part that makes me want to hunt thig down is where you said it was clear Megan Fox was enjoying herself in the role. I love movies where this is true. I think it absolutely comes through in the movies. My favorite example is "Clue". You can see they were having a ball making the movie.
