Neil, I love you and Andrews channel so much, my friends, Fabian and Yahir, who I play guitar with, all aspire to be as good as you guys someday, Your bass playing is influential in the way you describe it, normally I wouldn't sit here and watch a guy with a bass talk for 12 minutes, but since you're so entertaining to watch, I was able to, I don't have any questions but, I just wanted to let you know how influential you guys are to us, and I wanted to thank you.

Very cool. I love it when I learn something new, or hear something new in a Beatles song I've heard a thousand times. I never knew about Paul's "D over G" or "C over F" or whatever it was during the solo, then I went back and listened to the song, and, sure enough, there it was. I've heard that song a thousand times, and I've hummed that bassline hundreds of times, but I never noticed those two cool notes being played at the same time. GREAT analysis, great information, really, really as in depth as you can get with this stuff, stuff I bet Paul himself wouldn't even remember he did, like when he started plucking, then went to the pick during the opening of the song. I love this stuff! Great job, man!

Great video, Neil! You know I love you and Andrew, and I appreciate the knowledge and enthusiasm you guys have for this music. But...Question! You talk about raising the action on the Hofner to get that "Paul" sound. So do we think that Paul was that advanced in his playing at that point in the development of The Beatles? In other words, did he raise the action deliberately? He'd been playing bass in the band for, what, four or five years?
@neilcandeloramusic
@neilcandeloramusic 4 жыл бұрын
I would say after their Hamburg schedule they were pretty advanced in their playing. Even their daily schedule in 63 was insane - they were playing multiple shows a day almost every day of the year. I’m not sure if it was deliberate or if the action slowly rose and he just liked it. I would say this is more than likely, his Rick action is pretty low when he first gets it and seems to slowly raise over the years.

Hey your strings insert was for long scale bass strings. Is that what you are using on that and just cutting them short or was that a generic drop in?

@neilcandeloramusic

Ignitions sound more like German hofners than contemporaries do, but contemporaries look more like the real thing (and sound good too, it’s like a blend of a hofner and a rick). Regardless you should always put flats on them IMO
@counterfeit1148
@counterfeit1148 3 жыл бұрын
@@neilcandeloramusic About the flatwounds, is there anything I should worry about with the size of the nut?
@neilcandeloramusic
@neilcandeloramusic 3 жыл бұрын
Counterfeit325 no, the only thing you need to be worried about is the length. Hofners technically aren’t actually “short scale”, they are sort of “medium scale” short scale strings will work, just the the clothed part of the strings will stretch slightly into the first fret. If you put long scale strings on, they will eventually unwind as tension is applied and can break your tuners. Labella, pyramid and thomastik make hofner sized strings and d’addario make “medium scale” strings that will fit

Another great job. Not seen anybody do this better. Here is a question where the Beatles guitars tuned down a half step on that first Sullivan show? I have seen some replays where its definitely sounding lower,. Thanks.
@AblyHouse
@AblyHouse 4 жыл бұрын
I believe The Beatles actually tuned down for this performance. I'm not sure why and haven't read much about it. Two days later, they played Washington Colosseum and they were still tuned in Eb, this seems to confirm its their tuning and note the tape speed. My best would have been it's because they were sick and didn't want to risk cracking, maybe tuning down relaxed them.
@1rwjwith
@1rwjwith 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that fact is amazing because I don't think there is any other time or at least I never heardof any other time when they actually tuned down to Eb . I wonder if somehow it was an accident! Because they did not have tuners and tuned to something set to that a piano or maybe a old scope tuner that was set wrong?I mean it is really weird how that worked out! Thanks for your reply and stay safe.
@AblyHouse
@AblyHouse 4 жыл бұрын
@@1rwjwith - I was thinking the same thing! My only problem with the theory, is the Beatles are quite competent musicians/singers obviously. Surely they'd notice the songs they wrote, and had been constantly singing, were in a different part of their voice. There are certain Beatles Tribute bands that play in Eb. When I play with those bands, I have trouble nailing my pitch because certain notes can feel different a half step down. I think because of this, they practiced a half step down intentionally and kept it that way for a few days to keep it consistent
@neilcandeloramusic
@neilcandeloramusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@1rwjwith it would have been a conscious choice. George was also sick that week too, I think they just wanted to a guarantee a good live stress free performance. They probably kept them tuned down until he felt fully recovered after Washington.
