Another day of farming, back in the tractor to do some more tillage. Get a quick Look at the corn planter and finish up the fertilizer tank project.

I had Kennebeck potatoes left from last years garden in a wooden basket in my basement ! They had eyes about a foot long on some and some beautiful looking little new growth buds on them. So ,I trimmed them down and pieced them up to pretty small pieces and planted them yesterday . I put the piece about six inches deep and throw a couple handfuls of cow manure and compost on them before covering them! This is the latest I ever planted my patch and using only my own seed stock .We shall see!

Five truck loads of seed potatoes is a lot. Shows just how big of an operation it is that you have. Fixing the tank and mounting it was good, relatively simple. A good show and tell on that big corn planter would be nice. Much more industrial than I have ever seen. Those two tanks on each planter and the big tank on its own trailer.

Great insight into how you farm in this part of the US. The splitting of the seed potatoes is interesting. The practice in Europe is to kill off the potato crop early if you’re growing seed potatoes. They’re then small enough to be handled by the planter. As these crops are harvested earlier than eating potatoes there’s usually a follow on crop in the ground immediately after harvesting.
@BellsFarming

Yes! I have learned that from some other viewers too! I thought seed cutting was what everyone does! Thank you for commenting!

@@BellsFarmingIt’s an efficient way to use seed potatoes though. I’m in Ireland & in my early 60s. I remember when I was a boy, my granny & 2 old sisters of my grandfather sitting in a shed for days splitting seed potatoes by hand. These were put into long wooden boxes. They were then taken to the field & planted by hand. They grew most of their own food. Those were simpler times. All they knew was hard work 👍

Another great video Molly. It’s really nice to see someone who truly loves what they’re doing and is passionate about it. It sure makes the day go by a lot faster, such a sense of accomplishment in the process as well. Of course working side by side with your spouse doesn’t hurt either. Oh and I saw the other two videos on Averageshot I especially liked the “Battleship” challenge. Derricks wife Maranda knocked it out of the park!👍🏼👍🏼 I wanted to let Shane know I’ve been researching my fathers Korean military service and I have learned that he was in the 82nd Airborne (thank goodness they weren’t called into battle) but he qualified as expert marksman the gun they used was the M1E8 (M1D) was fitted with a M73 in a block mount sight, also known as the M81 sight (with crosswires) or the M82 (with post). Ancient compared to what y’all are using.

Couple of questions: What advantage is there in letting the potato seed dry for a couple of days? Also, what kind of fertilize do you add when planting the potato seed and do you add it directly in the trench with the seed? I really enjoy the video content that Shane and you share with us.
@BellsFarming
@BellsFarming 19 күн бұрын
It’s let the cuts heal up. We add the nitrogen mix 2 inches away from the seed. And the pop up fertilizer gets misted directly on the seed. Thank you so much for watching!

Interesting how irregularly shaped your fields are. Fields tend to be 80-150 acres around NE Nebraska. Kinda determined by how pivots fit.

Yeah our fields are fit between streams and land features. We do have. Some larger fields but most are not square

Awesome as always Molly. Great to see how much actually goes into this and the final product. Y'all take pride in your farm and it shows! What kind of "yellow potatoes" do you plant? Yukon Gold or?? Are they chip potatoes? Keep up the phenomenal job :)

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I was wondering why you don't grow your own seed potatoes? Is it because of a lack of acreage? Thank you for the great videos. God bless
@BellsFarming
@BellsFarming 23 күн бұрын
Don’t apologize! We don’t grow our own seed because we find it easier to just sell all of our potatoes and not have to store that many totes of dirty seed potatoes over the winter. When we buy seed it brings in new genetics! And helps support other farmers

Thank you so much! Yes we treat the seed with to help them dry, and a fungicide to keep them from rotting in the furrow.
