I used moldboard plowing for mainly turning under green manure crops and or rice stubble directly after harvest stubble usally still green.

You got to do tillage when fertilizer is applied so those nutrients get mixed into the soil where the roots are. What is the best way to move those nutrients when you are trying to notill?

There has been years where subsidies kept farmers out of bankruptcy. However, if you till you are not allowed to participate in subsidy programs. I would prefer about a 6" till. However, if the crop I grew that year had serious problems due to some type of trade dispute then I would be left out of the $1.50 or so per bushel to make up the difference. That is a huge risk for most farmers.

Understandable that it depends on the growers situation and equipment but there really should be no reason for such intensive tillage anymore. Leaving crop residue on the field has too many benefits not do it. If it’s weeds you’re worried about, you’re only tilling dormant weed seeds to the surface as the soil is flipped over. Residue makes it harder for weeds to germinate and breakthrough. Growers should have a proper rotation to break up pest and weed cycles anyways.

yes, but you have no way of doing no-till without herbicides and fungicide
