Growing Tillandsia or 'Air Plants' is all about light and water, we look at a collection of Tillandsia from the Bromeliad Society of Victoria annual show, a few of our own and also discuss basic care and cultivation. Light, Watering, Mounting and Fertilizer (YES Fertilizer).
Mesic and Xeric types are examined and we give our thoughts on soaking and dunking.

For me, spraying does nothing but create problems, even in my extremely dry mediterranean climate during the summer. I instead found that soaking gives them the time to absorb water, so that they can be left dry for days, without worrying about dehydration or sprayng all the time.

Hello Savvas and thanks for the comment. Once you are experienced, dunking and soaking can work well, however it really does depend on your climate and other factors, so for beginners, to read soak for anything between 30 mins and 24 hours, without talking about climate, species etc is not helpful., We are looking at doing a video solely on watering Tillandsia. So would be interested to know more about your climate, what species you grow, how long you soak and how you dry them. Watering does depend on the climate, how you actually do it, when you do it the species. We find as a General Rule, spraying is best for those who are beginners,.

Great video, I have a question about the Spanish moss, Do they require the same growing conditions as the tillandsias that grow up in the trees in direct sunlight? I want to try and grow some Spanish moss but I don't understand their growing conditions. Thanks for all the knowledge of the different tillandsia plants and their growing conditions 💚🌿💯

Hello Joey We are working on a video on Spanish Moss right now. Bot of a long term project as we are demonstrating growing from a small cutting. HOWEVER ..... Here are the basics. It depends on your climate zone. But Generally Dappled shade, not full sun. Hang from timber or rope (Not Copper or Galvanised Wire) Mist spray during hot weather. Outdoors, once established you can use a hose on light spray. Add some liquid fertiliser to the mist spray every 3 - 4 week from spring through summer. Only soak it if it gets very dehydrated. You will read that it needs mist spraying every day. This depends on the climate, hot and dry means more watering. Outdoors, in the shade, in a temperate or tropical climate, not so often. Hope this helps
