I know I've been promising this video for awhile now, but I finally got around to showing you all how I can keep my air plants (tillandsias) alive. This is a complete care guide on these air plants and everything I think you should know about air plant care.
Air plants are easy, but it wasn't such a easy path to success for me. These plants can be tricky, especially when it comes to watering. Hopefully this video can help shed some light on these guys and make you want to add them into your plant collection.

I have my collection for more than 10 years. Light is very important! I have orchids, and air plants like orchid lights (I use day light LEDs of different lumens.) Lights set for 12/12. Soaking is a KEY! You showed it right way! I use dish drying mat to dry plants. When they completely dry I stack them on my manzanita tree. No any kind of attacments. Plants are free! Air movement is important too, big deal! Many air plants will continue to leave after blooming and will grow pups! I keep pups together, they grow and survive better. Little ones can die easily if separated. I separating them when they are big. Some air plants are hardy and can tolerate low humidity (surprize for me!). Winter humidity in my house can reach unhealthy 23%. Oddly I found out that low humidity is better! Plants are drying faster, not rotting, just need some misting. I got that salon fine mist bottle, very fine mist doesn't have droplets, good for orchids too! Xerographica is amazing plant, still alive after 10 years, two pups! Stramineyas all died😢, absolutely love stricta's blooms! Thank you for your video!

I’m contemplating getting a gigantic xerographica that is purportedly 7-10 years old. She said that it’s life expectancy was less than that so I wonder if I buy it if it’s on its limited days.

I have one for several years flowered and produced seedlings. I would dunk my entire plant 15 minutes in diluted 20-20-20 fertilizer. Never had any problem. 🙋🏼‍♀️🪴🌿 It does get a lot of ventilation and dries any water within the layers.

I'm learning! Just got into these. I started turning these small pots out of beech wood, like little flower pots. I glue magnets too them so they can be used as fridge magnets? I was putting succulents in them, but little air plants are ideal ... and soil doesn't fall out if you drop them :-) Super informative video.

I don't know where you live. In Austin, TX where I live, they wouldn't survive the summer or the winter like that. The exception is "ball moss", T. recurvata, and I can keep that outside. It's not very pretty, though.

Thank you for all the information, I only now figured out two parts have already had a flower, and have red colour on the tips of the flowers, but two of them didn't have flowers yet, and are nice and green. So my question is do I need to separate the green ones from ones that flowerd, or they can stay until going r.i.p.?

Thank you for your excellent advice on caring for air plants. I have to change my ways for 3 of them, but now I know what to do. My husband bought me 6 for Christmas, including the Xerographica. I was watering it incorrectly. I share your love of these special plants, I try to make them happy, and they definitely make me happy. Thank you again for your advice, will check back more frequently.

This was so helpful, thank you! I had a set of three from the garden center, glued on a piece of wood and the two small ones died by root rot but the one in the middle which had thrived in the beginning just got some yellowing and a few brown spots and I was wondering if our hard water caused that. I have bought a water filter now so maybe that’ll improve. I like her a lot and hope she will survive 🥲 I have mostly misted them because they were glued on but now that I freed that one I will give it baths and let it dry upside down. I didn’t know that the water goes inside if I spray on the open tendrils so I won’t do that anymore too. Also so far it was very happy with fertiliser for orchids :)

I was wondering, Would liquid cactus fert. work? I live in Alaska. So, I melt snow to water my plants. It's nice to not have to wait for a rainy day. I let it set overnight and strain it out. We've had a lot of storms, so there is a lot of tree parts on it.

Aw hi & welcome! 😊 your air plant will love it outside! I don’t know your climate you’re in but air plants grow wild here in FL and love the warmer weather. Just make sure your plant doesn’t get too cold (below 40 degrees) in the fall/winter. Just follow the steps in this video or you can check out my blog (linked in the video description) and that should help you with your air plant care success! Good luck 😊👏🌿

Not sure what I'm doing wrong I've killed about 10 in a year I have them under grow lights I only spray once a week leaving them upside down to dry but they still rot
@milamilla1977
@milamilla1977 17 күн бұрын
Grow lights may not work. With my trial and errors I found out that mixed light is better, I use sun from the window, but I'm keeping plants 2-3 feets from window, and I use day spectrum LED flood type of big lumens. I found day spectrum (5000K) works better on orchids and air plants. I use timer for 12 hours. Air movement is important too. We set our air conditioner (we have heat pump, so its cools/heats), fans in house in a way that air moves through the rooms, no need for small fans in plant zone. But set up is different for each house. The key is not too much of draft. Soaking is good, I soak for several hours, but drying on dish mat is important. After that plants go to they display place under lights. Soak twice a month is reasonable, I watch if airplant is curly, I will soak it. And one more: I use reverse osmosis water. We have that Waterdrop unit for drinking water

I like this, and I like you,, but I think you are making it too complicated. I put airplants on a piece of bark or rock, using glue, and I drill a hole in the bark or hammer out a cavity in the rock. Sometimes I give them away, with an easy set of instructions: bright light, pour water over them once or twice a week (or use a sprayer), keep them at room temperature. I water mine with a sprayer, the same kind of sprayer/mister that hairdressers use, which you can get for about $10. They stay in one place and I go around and spray them twice a week. I don't move them around as you do. My problem is that the water here is so hard that it would clog up the sprayer after a while, so I have a water distiller (about $200). Now... about soaking them. I'm against it. It's not the way they live in nature, and it washes off all the dust, pollen and other stuff that settles on them and fertilizes them. You would not believe what is really in the dust floating through the air. You could look it up. The trichomes hold that stuff in place until it becomes fertilizer. It shouldn't be washed off by soaking. And if you really think it needs fertilizer and you've drank some beer, you know what to do. You mentioned it yourself. But not too often. I have about 30 plants, and after I build more shelves, I'll get more, I've never killed one and I've given quite a few away. People are really astonished at a strange-looking plant (T. bulbosa, for instance) on a piece of bark when they get it as a gift. Sometimes they kill it, but that's the breaks. One lady left it in the dark when she went on vacation, and I facepalmed when she told me.

I water my air plants with a fine mist sprayer using natural rain water. Soaking air plants does tend to cause rotting if it's not warm enough in the place they are the water they have been soaked in doesn't dry very well and air plants do need to be in a well ventilated area to dry out quickly or they will just turn black and rot.
