I've had a Tilley Airflo for about 10 years now. 100% agree with you Bryan--the best hat I've ever had! I don't think since getting it I've ever even thought of wanting another hat. I've taken it kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, to spectator sports, whatever. Best hat in the world.

Can’t agree more! I have 2 Tilley Hats I bought the Air Flo LTM6 in light Khaki as the 2nd hat and it’s the only Tilley I wear now. I’ve worn it every where from fishing to hunting, kayaking, vacationing, and yes the straps do work in high winds. I got caught in a bad storm fishing off the coast of Carolina and was in some serious high seas and winds. The Tilley never moved from my head. These are the best hats on the market. And they Dry very quick when they get wet when you get caught in rain. Can’t say enough good things about Tilley Hats.

I agree, sort of. I know that they have been bought once or twice and I have heard that the Quality and Customer Service are not what they were under the original owners, that’s just hearsay. I don’t know for sure.

I have this model in a light khaki color. I originally bought it for sun protection on canoeing trip. This hat is very well made and works perfectly to keep your head protected. I also wear it when playing golf, fishing, hiking, and while doing yard work. The vent really does keep your head cooler. Much cooler than a ball cap. Yes it costs more than a lot of hats but it's a lifelong purchase and very high quality.

Great review. Tilley hats are a Canadian product. I bought my first 15 years ago. I now have seven of them. That's the only problem with them. They are like potato chips... bet you can't have just one;)

You really need to go to a reputable store with an experienced salesperson before buying a Tilley LTM6 hat. I went to Orvis in Chicago to buy my hat. The salesperson was experienced and advised me on the sizing. If I had bought it online I would have bought the size 1/4inch larger. He said if you are on a boat with wind blowing you want slight head tightness without resorting to the loops. He also told me about various ways to do the looping. Including turning the hat into the Australian style. His answer to my final question on how to store the hat while traveling won the deal. He said just pancake it flat in your travel bag or if you are walking, just roll it up like a burrito and put it in your pocket. Best advise ever. Now on in the tropics SEA, I am one of the few ones to get complementary looks for my hat.

According to Tilley themselves it should fit loose for comfort. I got one 2 years ago and I’m glad I got it loose fitting because it is very comfortable that way. I do have to be careful to tighten the string behind my head like a troopers hat when it is windy so it doesn’t blow off, but it’s not ussually windy enough to worry.

I've had mine for over 10 years, and it is one of the best investments I have ever made. It performs as advertised, feels good, looks good, and will last forever. They are also over priced, but mine was worth it. Thanks for the vid, and enjoy the hat. You will still have it years from now, and will probably still like it.

It really was nothing but dumb luck that I saw this hat on your other video. I was LITERALLY about 10 minutes from buying an Outdoor Research hat on Amazon. I'm so glad I watched that video! You have now helped me to spend about 125$ on 2 pks of the tarp buddys & this hat. I went & tried one on and it's seriously the best fitting hat I have ever had! That's the Best hat I've ever owned, I have the Safari in Tan and use it for fly fishing here on #VancouverIsland #BC. Canadian craftsman ship at its Best! I bought mine in the '80's & its still water repellent like it was just bought. I paid about $39.95 in the '80's so $79.95 today is worth it! Mr.Tilly passed away a few months back maybe that's why the change in Marketing.

Hey Bryan, Things are not the same at Tilley. No more Alex Tilley, the company is on it's 3rd owner, it is $20 to get a new one, you have to send pictures of the destroyed hat that is guaranteed for life even though you have sent the rquired shots of the damage the hat suffered in order to qualify for the guarantee. I have had a Tilley hat since '90 and currently own 3 of them. However, as George Harrison said "All Things Must Pass." By the way, that hat on you looks good and the fit on a Tilley is really good when its right. Good luck!

I checked these out and they are very well made. I found a knock off of similar quality at Bass pro for 29. No lifetime warranty but it would still be cheaper to replace. Unfortunately it is not finely crafted in Canada... a bit farther away than that. Nice job Bryan.

The best hat review ever. I'll definitely be looking into these. I had a nice oilskin style job that my friend from Japan to a liking to. Great hat but.....heavy. Which is why even though he's got my hat, I still like him. Features from this I liked were - The guarantee, the light weight, that amazing chord and not a bad style either. I own 3; airflow, tec wool, and hemp hat. The hemp hat seems to fit a little more snug than the others. Wish I would have gotten one size larger for the hemp hat. I absolutely love these hats. I would have to say the tec wool is my favorite with the airflow coming in second. Nice review I think you hit all the high points. Only added comment would be the fact you can point out other Tilley fans really easy and it's kind of a brother and sister hood.

I own three and my wife owns one. Recently I noticed some material separating from one of the grommets and sent it back. With in 6 days of dropping it off at the post office a new one was on my door step. I bought my first one in 2001 and it is still in great condition minus a couple of small stains. All of mine are made of the duck cotton.

The Tillley "insurance policy" is simply another way to sell a second hat to you. Make no mistake, Tilley still generate a profit on the half price theyre selling it to you. No middle men to pay. Secondly, the hats DONT last a lifetime if used normally - certainly the T3s dont. Im on my 3rd generation now. I use 2 T3's and both have worn down. Having said that, Tillley do swap out, no quibble, and the hats are nice to wear.

good overview - you recall that I wear the classic T3 which is now entering it's 12th year. You do have to wash it a few times per season but durability is unmatched. I haven't needed to buy another one but some of the newer styles are looking pretty good. But you needed to have worm the hat on a few trips or weekends with the scouts to fully appreciate what the hat can do instead of the out of the box review. Next time you got a stiff breeze, go outside with the hat. The back strap is good up to 50km/h ;)

They also make a 100% hemp hat too, the TH5 & the TH4. The TH4 is a broader brimmed hat. This hemp hat is water resistant, mildew resistant, & salt water resistant. Plus hemp is a more durable fabric than cotton. And don't worry if it catches fire you won't get high on the hemp. Lol! All the THC is gone out of it, which there wasn't very much in the first place. And yes I am a hemp advocate, not a pot advocate, (that's my brother not me), there is a difference. Of course, according to the DEA they can't tell the difference, and I thought the DEA agents were like trained professionals, so much for that idea...

May have to upgrade to one of these hats from Sportsman's Warehouse store ! Have a Bonnie Hat (first one wore out) and the brim offers protection from glare on my glasses. In the Albuquerque area we have sometimes a seventy MPH gentle breeze and the strap is needed ! And the Mollie Head Band can be used durning Christmas holidays to hold some Missiletoes... tjl

Great review. I'm going to Africa next year and the company that is putting the tour together has recommended Tilly hats for the trip. We can't have camo though because camo is illegal in some of the African countries (due to its association with poachers).

I sprayed mine with DEET as part of my tick protection ritual when on walkabout (the 30% DEET goes on any exposed skin, the 100% DEET goes on my hat/boots. Wonder if that affects the warranty....

Nice Tilley Brian. I have been after the Tilley Hemp TH5 in brown for about 4yrs now. The TH5 seems like the perfect multi-season canoeing hat to me. I currently have a Filson Packer hat in waxed canvas, but it is too warm for hot weather. It is more of a spring/fall rainy day canoe/bush hat.

Nice review! If they would have made the brim 3" in the front & back instead of 3 1/2" I would have been interested. Longer brims are just too floppy in windy areas plus it would have looked better IMO. They also should have made the brim shapeable with the wire in it. Don't like floppy, wavy looking brims. Other solid color choices (not everyone want to look like a hunter) like coyote brown with the sturdier Cordura nylon like these have (not the softer Nylamtium) fabric would have been nice too as well as a more reasonable price. Compared to similar hats these are obviously way overpriced - hence why they can afford the great warranty. Close but no cigar for me.

And as far as being obviously overpriced compared to similar hats, it's really hard to make a comparison until you have worn one for a little while. There are similar looking hats and I have tried several in my life but this is absolutely the most comfortable, lightweight, easy to care for hat I have ever worn. Period. So it's not obvious to me. I have bought several "similar" hats in the $30 price range and there is a definite difference.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tilley actually manufactures these.

You'd probably like the LTM5 with the smaller brim. They also come in different (solid) colors. Mine is khaki. Also comes in brown, olive green, black, and "natural" (off white).

You do it by hand after you take it out of the washing machine while it's still damp. Smooth and reshape brim. Then set somewhere to air dry.

Brian, does the hat have a drop down neck shade, and drop down mosquito head netting? I have these with a boonie (including the pocket and neck strap), a drop down face shade (for winter), and a separate bandana. If they have this, then I am in.

Yet in that super heat, we have Monsoon storms, Which can drop the temps by 30 degrees in 30 minutes. Was the hat sizing true??? That' the big risk in ordering hats online.

The Tilley company has been sold twice since this review was uploaded. Now (2019) the hats are changed. As is true whenever a company is sold, the new owners want to cut costs and Tilley is no exception. Also the country of manufacture (originally Canada) may have changed, I don’t know. But the quality has certainly changed. The brim of the LTM series hats is no longer straight and well-formed but is now thinner and floppy like many of the other Tilley hats-and other brand hats. If the style of the hat, the look, is important to you, you may want to consider a different maker. I personally went with a Sunday Afternoons Charter hat. +Wildwood Prepper As I said in the video, Tilley sent me this to review, I can tell you I have been saving my REI dividend waiting for the next discount coupon so I could buy one because I have heard nothing but great things about them. I have tried several other very similar looking hats over the years and was never really satisfied with them. Maybe it's because they usually come in S,M, L type sizing instead of actual hat sizing and maybe my head doesn't fit one of those choices as well. All I can say for sure is this is absolutely the most comfortable hat I have ever worn in 55 years of sucking in oxygen.

You're right about the sizing I checked my Lowes hat and it was a M, so that is true.

Serious comment tho this time brian... I think this is a great review but i cant even imagine spending like 90 bucks on a boonie... Ive had one from a flea market that i paid a whopping 2 dollars for that is everything i need in a hat... I just cant justify the difference in price...

I hear you but apparently a lot of people don't agree. I have met quite a few folks with Tilley hats and they pretty much said they were more than satisfied. All I can say is it is the most comfortable hat I have ever worn and it sheds rain pretty good too.

Your hat may not be water repellent. Your hat sure won't float. Your hat doesn't have a super secret pouch inside to hide stuff. And you'll live the rest of your life getting sub-par punanni because you wear a $2 flea market hat.... and not a Tilley.

Now Tilly want you to destroy your old hat and send photos along with $20 can plus taxes before they send a new hat. My hat developed stains from the stiching leeching into the fabric, it looks like a permanent sweat stain :-( I would like to keep the old hat as it was a gift from a departed friend.

I think the company was sold a while back. Maybe the new owners are not as trusting or maybe they don’t understand why the original owners were successful enough to make the company an attractive purchase. Maybe they never heard “it it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. But they are still great hats.

Tilley sold out recently and the new owners have started to have their famous hats MADE IN CHINA in addition to Canada where the hat was invented. I feel this is a trend that I, as a Tilley fan, will not support. I refuse to buy a MADE IN CHINA Tilley anything! I can only imagine the reason for doing this is to maximize what profit they can from the company in as short a time as possible. Very, very sad! :-(
