Sad thing is their first remakes were decent because like Illumination, in their first rodeo they didn't realize they didn't have to try yet. Maleficent and Cinderella (remake) are both pretty decent especially the first Maleficent. And so was this one

There’s a 1988 stop motion movie directed by Jan Švankmajer that’s an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. But if you watch it or look it up, you’re gonna need a lot of therapy after that and it makes McGee’s Alice look like Dora the Explorer compared to it.

If Wonderland had to be real, I wish they could've handled it in a similar fashion to the Ni No Kuni games (if you've played/heard of them). It'd be more interesting if they played with Wonderland being a bizarre reflection of the real world.

My favorite Alice In Wonderland adaptation is the 1933 live-action one with Charlotte Henry. It was the reason why Walt Disney didn't make the Live-action Animated one he was planning for his first film. I do have nostalgic fondness for this one, but I know it's got flaws, and it started a big Disney Live-action dump. Loved the review 👏

This movie seems to have the effect that Schaffrillas calls “Phantom Menacing”, where a movie comes out that is objectively bad, but at the time, everybody was trying to convince themselves that it was a good movie, and tries to block out any problems that are in the movie. However, over time, they start to realize the movie’s true colors and shortcomings, and they now call it a bad movie, which was what it always was the moment it came out.

To be fair, this was amazing because it was a sequel. Most of the other films were terrible because they remade (relatively) recent films with too much changed or little to change, or were reimaginings that, while fine as standalones, took the bite out of the original characters.

What amazes me is the lack of imagination behind the very premise of the story. It is literally all about slaying a dragon. Why would you waste Wonderland on slaying a dragon? Considering all the madcap stuff you can do with Wonderland, you pick the most clichéd fantasy story. The fact there is no character arc for Alice nor does Alice really do much more than the most bare bones interaction with her environment just makes it all the worse. Really, it was successful because of the name, and many of the remakes were success because of their names. However, I do think we've reached the point of diminishing returns. The Little Mermaid might've made money, but not nearly as much as the others. We will see what happens with Snow White.

But the other live action remakes SUCKED! Beauty and The Beast (2017), Lion King (2019), Aladdin (2019), Mulan (2020), all these were TERRIBLE! They had no hearts or souls. The magic wasn't there. I really hated the Mulan remake. What's the point of this story if she's a strong and capable fighter from the start?!? All the songs are gone, and they cut out the funniest character, Mushu. I avoided the Lion King one entirely. That one should not even exist. The stage musical is so much more creative and stands on its own compared to the animated movie. Not gonna lie, even though I know they're not that good, I have a giant soft spot for the two live-action AIW movies. I saw the first one in theaters with my family, it was one of the first 3D movies I saw, and I watched it all the time when having sleepovers with my cousin. The second one is the same, as I also watched it with my family. I can't bring myself to dislike these movies, they have a special place in my heart. Plus, they do the one thing modern live-action remakes don't: it actually tries to be different and stand out in its own way as opposed to recreating iconic scenes from the original and screaming "REMEMBER THIS?!?!?!"

Both this movie and the sequel feel more like deep cut remakes of the Adventures in Wonderland show from the 1990s. The series basically follows the same formula of Alice dealing with a problem in the real world before going into Wonderland where she partakes in strange adventures with its inhabitants that revolve around the situation that she is dealing with at home and then uses what she learns there to solve her issues in real life.

So this is what you meant when you said Walt made a remake. Yeah, I don’t think I’d count that in the same regard as the remakes we’re getting now. I don’t even know if those old Alice films were made when Disney (company) was a thing. All you have in the terms of a remake is that they’re based on the same thing. So I wouldn’t say Walt made a remake and would agree with current Disney’s plans, based on that at least. But this stuff about the strike does seem more believable in terms of evidence (more so than a certain other thing Walt is accused of) and even though I still do believe that Disney was better paying than other animation studios at the time, clearly that just means others had to be worse. Either that or we’re just so used to hating on corporate leaders that we ignore all other details. (Hopefully joking here)

While I am in no way going to defend Walt Disney for his business practices and stance on Unions and how he treated his workers, I will at least say that what puts him above Iger and other modern CEO's (if only slightly) is his actual ambition and risk taking nature. You'll never see Iger use the profits of these billion dollar successes to fund an arthouse film like "Fantasia," or try developing an entire city that was intended to become an advancement on civilization. I do think Walt would be smart enough to take advantage of these products, using them as a foundation for financial stability while using their excessive profits to fund more creative and ambitious films he was passionate about and his more "out there" ideas. Love him or hate him, he got things done, and didn't just sit around on his money pile.

Remakes are only justified when they need to be reintroduced to the public consciousness. The problem with the Disney remakes is that their source materials are classics that still remain relevant to modern audience. Cinderella managed to somewhat justify its existence by being less emotion-driven and more character-driven than the original. The Jungle Book remake was essentially just the original but with a longer plot and a darker tone, but it didn't really do the story justice or do anything clever. The wolves are given more screen time, but they don't really do anything. They wanted Mowgli's struggle to be external rather than internal like it was in the original, but in doing so they removed his complex and sympathetic character. So that remake failed to justify itself. But after that, the remakes pretty much just stopped trying.
