This ain’t a major thing but thank you Ryan for that clarification. Mostly locals are the ones who understand this but not everyone in Hawaii are Hawaiian. It’s not the same as saying Californian or whatever because it’s an actual indigenous race. Here in Hawaii we identify as our own races and never say we’re Hawaiian unless we’re kanaka.

I'm no less Canadian than someone whose ancestors came here from Europe 50 years ago. It's also kind of different because Hawaiʻi was a kingdom before they became part of the U.S. The Indigenous groups and tribes throughout Canada were never unified under a single government before colonialism. So when talking about their cultural roots, at least in my reading, they tend to reference their specific culture and communties rather than talking about Canadian as a ethnic group, because it's not really.

My family is Korean/Filipino/Japanese who has been in Hawaii for generations, and while the majority of the culture we follow is Hawaiian, we’ve never called ourselves hawaiian.

I went to a Japanese restaurant once, ordered some kind of savoury pancake-like dish (can't remember name). The chef added some flakes to it. When it came out, the dish was hot and streaming, causing the light flakes on it to move.
