Tim Howard conceded a similar goal to his opposite number, Floyd Croll (Wiigan), while playing for the Man U reserves several years earlier. he said that the experience scarred him and i'm sure that played a huge part in his decision not to celebrate.

I tried at any chance I was given, when it finally happened I just remember feeling awful about it and apologizing to the opposing keeper afterwards, a few years after that I had a keeper score on me; his celebration was running over too shake my hand and console me, It was an overwhelming show of respect and sportsmanship. No keeper with any level of decency wants too score, it’s a shitty feeling

Remember going from the bizarre high of Tim Howard’s goal to defeat. Bolton were bottom of the table going into this game too, honestly thought we’d beat them, alas, it wasn’t to be. Remember this game like it was yesterday, will be 11 years ago in January.

I think Howard felt rather guilty that there was a fairly strong gust of wind that helped the ball along. I don't think he would have felt very good if he were on the other end of that one. He would have been livid at himself and the weather. In any event: a great, powerful kick + a huge bounce + well-timed wind = epic goal
