When my daughter was being born she wasn't breathing due to anesthesia that was given to my wife. The doctors had me leave the operating room, I cried out to God, "Please don't take the girl." A few minutes later I heard my daughter crying, praise the Lord,. 28 years later my wife had to undergo open heart surgery and it was worse than the doctors expected. After my wife was brought to ICU I was able to meet with the doctor as he told me "She's a very sick lady." I asked if she was going to survive and the doctor would not answer that question. He sent me down the hall away from the ICU room where my wife was. There again 28 years later I cried out to God, "Please don't take the girl". Praise God 11 days after being in the ICU she returned home. Tim, this song has so much meaning for me and my family. Thank you. May God continue to bless you.

My husband plays Johnny in this video. It was the first job he booked in LA when he was in college. We were blessed to meet Tim McGraw back stage after one of his concerts and he recognized my husband and got down on his knees (just like in the video). He was so gracious and kind. My husband is a high school math teacher and wrestling coach so this video gets around the school at least once a year. Brings back a lot of memories.

I heard the song on a cassette a long time ago. It made me Cry. Seeing the video, seeing the ending, with Johnny fishing with a little boy and "the wife" running to them....was answering the question I had when I first heard the song ......did she die!? 😥 Nope! Glad I finally got my answer! 😊👍 ( ps....how cool to know that your husband was in that video! And to know his history. That he became a Math Teacher and Wrestling Coach.) 😊 Blessings to you and your family!

This song always hits me hard. I know the kind of love this man has for his wife, an unselfish love for which he would give his own life to save hers. Shortly after I married my present wife of 18 years now, my wife had a severe allergic reaction and we rushed her to the hospital (myself, her (Christina), and my two sons, Benjamin(then 7) & Christopher(then 4). My wife was put on life support as she had passed away in the emergency room, and was revived by the staff. I had all the same feelings that the man in this song had. Not only did I not want to lose my wife, but I could not bear to have to tell my sons that their "Mommy" would not be coming home with us. I never prayed as hard, as I did that night. I praise God for every day that he gives me with my wife, I look forward to many more years with her, God willing. Thank you so much for posting this song!

This is what country these days lack, a story. Takes the listener on a journey with the singer and the song. You can mix and match beats and sounds but you can't beat a well sang country song with a good story to tell.

Tim Mcgraw came out with this song at the time that my youngest daughter was expecting her first baby. She struggled the entire time that she was carrying my granddaughter. We were told over and over for months that my daughter would most likely lose her baby. I heard this song for the first time about 2 or 3 months after it was released. I remember just being afraid that my granddaughter would not be born. But thanks to God my granddaughter was born healthy. This song is my favorite song. Tim Mcgraw thank you for such a beautiful song. It holds great meaning for me everytime I look at my granddaughter's picture or when I see her.

This song is the dearest song in the world to me. My son John was 17 years old in 1994, he was in a horrific auto accident , he And his sister, Amy were life flighted out to SLC. Two days later John died, his amazing spirit came to his unconscious little sister, and encouraged her to fight. And she did. The song was played at his funeral. My favorite photo is my son John fishing with his dad. I can never listen to this song with out shedding tears. My gratitude to Tim McGraw is overwhelming. I may never meet him but I so want him to see this message and feel the love and appreciation from the hearts of two parents and nine siblings who still cry whenever this song is sung. Our Amy is married and has 4 Beautiful children. Our John lives on in our hearts. Each year on his birthday and at Christmas time we give a special gift to someone in his honor. And his precious spirit guides us to know who the person is. Jonny’s daddy was taking him fishing when he was eight years old.

This beautiful song is just one of the reason's 1990's country music was undeniably in a class of it's own. I never even liked country music, but artists like Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, George Straight, Garth Brooks, The Judd's, Reba, Faith Hill, Diamond Rio, The Dixie Chicks, John Michael Montgomery & so many more made it easy to fall in love with the music & eventually I even found my own country boy who I fell head over boots for. Sadly our love story did not have a happily ever after.. but I was lucky enough to have his son. His dad was one of the great loves of my life & I am SO grateful for our time together. My sweet son, the light of my life, passed away tragically & unexpectedly in 2019. He was just 25, just finished college, owned his own home.. had a great job, had a beautiful girl, he planned to propose to.. so needless to say this song hits a little extra these days. Through it all though, my country boy & I have remained friends. 🥰

The third verse happened to me. My wife lost 17 units of blood in the 24 hours after our second son was born. Doctor told me that she wasn't going to make it and then went back in try one last ditch effort to stop the bleeding, I hit the floor of the hospital and laid there wondering how I was gonna raise two boys without her. They already sent down a social worker from the hospital to help cope with the loss when shortly after the doctor came out and said that they were able to stop the bleeding and she had a small chance to recover. 17 total blood transfusions and a week in the Critical care Unit and she recovered. Doctor could not believe the strength. So yeah...this song PS Give Blood!

Sadly, God doesn't give a damn most of the time. It's almost like gods aren't real. I prayed hard a few times to take me instead of someone I loved. They died. Even my eight year old. And I prayed harder to let my mother die but my sister had the power of attorney. She fought the doctors who said it was hopeless. Ten months those damned machines kept her "alive". Ten Months! Then the insurance ran out and she had to pay. When she learned that she immediately told them to shut it down. The kicker? Mom had a LIVING WILL. And never wanted to be placed on the machines. Then sis refused to attend the burial. I kept changing the times, she wouldn't/couldn't make it. She lived 18 miles from the graveyard! I was 180+ miles away. In the end it was just me and two grave diggers. In a sleet/snow storm. 18 wheelers ran me off the road twice. Make a Living Will and make damn sure EVERYONE in the family knows about it!!! Then she sued over the will.... Oh, the autopsy revealed a disease called CJD*. No one survives it. Ever. Even rabies has a few survivors. *google

I try listening to it a few times during the years, but I couldn't, I would change it or walk away (if it's with a group of my friends). I could never complete the song. Tonight was the first time I've listened to it completely & a flood of painful memories came at me at once, & I lost it! 🥺 But I'm glad I did it cos I needed to release the tears I've been holding on for the past few months. A simple yet powerful ballad about three stages in a young man’s life, this song topped the Country Billboard charts for two weeks in 1994 and was Tim McGraw’s second ever song to reach that height. The song captures all the various emotions of a young boy, a teenager, and a young adult about to start a family - all told from the perspective of his relationship with a girl. Note that the end of each verse has a hook with a similar theme but different words. In each case he’s begging a man (well, God - whose image man was created in - in the third case) to not take this girl. In each case, the word “take” has a different meaning. All in all a very well conceived song from writers Larry Johnson and Craig Martin and beautifully performed by one of country’s legendary singers.

You know, I never get sappy, not a very "sensitive guy" but my wife is 33 weeks pregnant with our first (my Son), and I missed our last ultrasound (the last chance for me to see him before he is born) due to a training mission I got sent on to Ft. Bragg, I woke up this morning with this song in my head for some reason, just sat down to watch it... cried like a little baby. Big tough Soldier sitting in a hotel room alone crying over a song. Hahaha oohh man he is already changing me. UPDATE: Wow, this comment blew up over the 6 years haha I feel I owed an update to those inquiring. I was there for his birth and the birth of his future brother. Deployed twice, the second deployment I was evacuated from theater and subsequently retired from. My retrospect now calls it an arduous blessing in disguise to be honest. Now doing to school and living the slow sweet life with the boys and the wife back in AZ. Thanks for all the words guys, stay safe in this crazy 2020 we are living in. Have compassion in this time, let's not leave ruin for my boys, (all our children) let's leave them a better place than we were given by our parents.

Son was fine, but wife was having complications and may not make it. I'm very sorry for the pain you went through. Being human is rough, being a Christian is ten times harder. Once anyone picks up the old rugged cross, the devil notices immidiately. I hope through the years you've acquared faith. That's when you'll be able to take a sigh of relief from our God.

I hope you two have a long and good marriage. I've been married 35 years and sometimes I want to choke her but I always love her. I can tell you God's up there. I've almost died about a dozen times in the last eight years. Lungs filled with fluid (flash pulmonary edema) and I woke up in ICU as right as rain. Have had sepsis 5 times, but I also recovered from sepsis 5 times. Have had blood pressure as high as 247 over 18 and even higher when the machine provided to me by a medical monitoring group would only say "High" when I knew it would go to 247/187. Have had low blood pressure as low as 60/30 and the hospital was pretty sure I was dying, but I didn't. And had a heart rate that went over 200 Beats Per Minute and stayed there - until the hospital stopped my heart and then restarded it. I'm not afraid to die but it seems strange that I haven't already. God must have something in store for me but I sure don't know what it is. I retired from teaching Computer Science at a too program in the country, so I'm not just some dufus. I know more math than at least 96 percent of the population of the world and the probability that I can almost die that many times, but come out alive is extremely low. Yes. God's up there and down here as well. You should listen to Mark Shultz, Walking Her Home or I've Been There. Great songs that will tug at your heart. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmevkHmehNmDq80 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmevkHmehNmDq80

Man, this song always choked me up as a boy. Gets me every time when it’s comes to the childbirth part and “Johnny hit his knees”. It also instantly transports me back to ‘94 or ‘95 riding around with dad in the rain in his beat up pickup that we spray painted.

This song brings back memories of my mom driving me to school. This was always on the radio. Unlike most comments here, I’m not asking for pity, she’s still alive, it’s just a happy memory.

The sad-ass little girl holding the fishing pole really hits me hard. I can't explain it. Like, yeah, the whole video is sad and all, but something about the little girl on the verge of tears, that look of previous excitement that shifted rapidly into dejection and sadness, really hits me right in the soul.

Makes me cry every time... In my 20's I wound up in prison for a spell...A guy from Oildale, close to Bakersfield, California could sing this song spot on! Hearing him sing made me admire the song and it's been a part of me ever since.

currently listening and crying because i realized the deeper meaning of this song. to me its meant to project that over time feelings change and get stronger the more you love somebody. you may not love somebody a first but they will become a big part of your life. then they may be in your life and you really care about them. so much so that you would do anything to protect them from harm. In the end, you love them so much that your willing to give your life to save them. the sad part is in my life i have felt this way towards many people and and i was wrong to think they felt the same way about me. i cant take back the way i felt about people or the things i did because the feelings i had wee genuine but what i do wish i could do was find this song alot sooner than i did.

I hand it to Johnny. Nothing changed within him. From 8 years old, to 18, to 23 ... He never wanted anyone or anything to "Take The Girl." What a great story. What a great song.

This was literally the first song I ever remembered hearing when I was little. Now 24 or so years later with a daughter of my own and having experienced the love I have for her and the love I will always have for my ex/her father I can't listen to it without crying. Love this song.

Wow! Loved it when it first came out. Our little family was growing. We had powerful relatable life events. Learned what a life for life exchange prayer is in my my life with my “the girl”. One heck of a song. It relates so powerful for me still. We’ve been married 44 years in 2022 have eight grandkids. And in this song with Tim’s delivery I can travel back to when I first met her (she 17 me 18) and knew I never met anyone like her and I could not live without her. And 44 years later I love her even more. Thank You, Tim for this song and all your work! Keep writing. Keep singing. God bless you and your beautiful family.
