THE STORY
"ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, A SHOW COMES OUT BLAZING AND RESTORES YOUR FAITH IN BROADWAY. MATILDA IS THAT SHOW."
New York Post
MATILDA THE MUSICAL is more than a show, it's a phenomenon. Based on the beloved novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl, MATILDA is the story of an extraordinary girl who dreams of a better life. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, Matilda dares to take a stand and change her destiny.
This celebrated smash hit is presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company, one of the most acclaimed theater companies in the world, and the Dodgers, Tony Award®-winning producers of hits like Jersey Boys. Tony Award-winning director MATTHEW WARCHUS (God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests) helms this exhilarating and ingenious new musical The New York Times says is, "even more glorious than we were promised."

@timminchin, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I was a small girl being very abused when the first movie came out. I had also already read the book by then, mid-90s. I’m now nearly 40, and I have to say the book and original movie meant so much to me, as a neurodivergent girl in an extremely toxic environment. It meant so much to me back then, and I returned to both the book and movie over and over during my childhood. Watching the musical on Netflix now, I’m stuck by how much I’ve grown up. I’m also struck by how much your work on the musical means so much to me now. Thank you.

I was crying so much during this song and during the closing of the show that the girl sitting beside me asked me if I was the mom of the girl who was playing Matilda. The nostalgia of it all clearly didn't strike her like it was supposed to. Anyway, it's one of the best musicals I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing.

Our local children's musical theater is putting this show on this summer. This song is not written for the kids, it's for you and me - the adults who haven't forgotten what it's like to be an innocent kid. My oldest son is too old to be in the musicals anymore - he's off to college "growing up." My oldest daughter and younger son are both in the musical. She is the Acrobat and he is Nigel. My youngest daughter didn't make the audition cut, but she knows all the words to all the songs anyway. And this summer she found a boyfriend and is growing up fast before my eyes. So, yeah, this song hits pretty close to home and me and my wife get teary-eyed every time we hear it (and since we are both working back stage, its been like 50 times now!). I remember thinking to myself about my oldest son, "He's going to be in the 5th grade! Where has the time gone?" Seems like yesterday. We just have to keep remembering "These are the good old days." Thanks for letting me ramble.

"And when I grow up, when I grow up I will be brave enough to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed each night to be a grown-up!" This line always tears me up! It's so true, you discover the courage you never had as a kid and you're finally facing all your fears.

Look up Tim Minchin Friday Night Crack Up on KZbin and enjoy HIS rendition of “My House” from Matilda. There’s about 1 min 45 sec of talking before the song gets going. It’s sublime and so much better than the musical version in the female voice.

Its both! Life is both. I'm 25 responding to this 8 yr old comment, I feel like a baby yet like an old woman at the same time. You gotta stop and smell the flowers and see what your life is up to. This random guy once said, "if you don't stop and look around once and a while, you could miss it." He missed some school but i trust him

Saw the show in London about a year ago -- have had this song in my head ever since. I love the way the choreography goes with the song so well, so the older children take up the swgs from the younger ones and fly up and out with the chorus. Love Tim singing this too -- very different feelng, very lighthearted and goofy. I like it!

What is it about this song that puts a lump in my throat? There's nothing dark or sad in the lyrics at all. Maybe it's the nostalgia?

There's an interview where Tim says, more eloquently than I can, it addresses kids thinking how wonderful being grown up will be, and grownups are wistfully remembering all the hopes they had, maybe wondering if it's still possible to recover that sense.

"And I will wake up When the sun comes up and I will spend all day just lying in the sun And I won't burn because I'll be all grown up" It definitely hits hard to adults; the line above I thought especially beautiful, since when you are a child you think adults are the best and being one solves all your problems: to the point of thinking that nothing will faze you (not even the sun). Yet, as an adult you have a better comprehension of the problems, the sun does burn you, even if you only stepped outside for a couple of minutes. Sometimes we haven't really grown up.

I think this song is the saddest in the whole musical. While songs like I'm Here and My House are more conventionally sad in subject matter, this song perfectly captures the youthful exuberance that makes Matilda so meaningful. And the fact that it is performed by kids, to adults, is heartbreaking. They really seem hopeful that their lives will become easier as adults, while we know that isn't true. When I saw this song in the West End, i was still only a kid so I didn't doubt their statements,. Now that I'm older, and looking back on it, I can see the unrecognised hopelessness which makes it so sad.
