Of all Minchin’s stuff, at least of the pieces I’ve heard, this is the one that most strikes me as being most similar to Tom Lehrer’s work. A bit harsher or more direct perhaps-of course it’s the second decade of the 21st century rather than the 1950s or 60s-but still, to my ear at least, very reminiscent of (The Great) Tom Lehrer.

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park is a perfect Lehrer example when it comes to this song. The structure is so similar, and the extreme levels of wit too. Both songs do a massive 180 turn when the chorus starts. Lehrer loves spring, but fk pigeons let’s kill them with cyanide. Minchin finally accepts God lol joke cos logic and also fk God he’s a c-word.

The scale of the song's presentation is a big part of what makes this song so brilliant. Sorry that Tim had to censor "c*nt" in the original lyric for "creep" -- the shock value was perfectly acceptable as an expression of his comic rage. Plus, it doesn't rhyme with "stunt"! An unfortunate compromise -- especially in Australia where (from my understanding) the word is not as blunt as it is elsewhere.

@@shelbyvillerules9962 Most famous atheists (including Dawkins, who people seem to really take issue with) self-describe as agnostic purely in the technical sense. If presented with overwhelming evidence they would update their beliefs. This is just them conceding that any scientifically-minded person must be open to new evidence. But exceptional claims such as those pertaining to the existence of deities require exceptional evidence. That's the whole point of the song! Some people choose to simply use the word atheist to draw a line between themselves and the wishy-washy agnostic: "I don't believe in god per-se but I believe in something greater". I did not find this guy funny. Maybe it was just the way he looked. Grunge, Goth???? I thought it was sad when he said he did not believe in God, because "no one had offered him enough evidence to belay his doubts.” I have encountered people who said this to me before. That’s a cop out for not taking the initiative to search for one’s self. My question for this guy is, “How can a person expect to find something, if s/he is not looking for it?" I also thought it was sad that this guy thinks it is funny to make fun of, devalue and belittle people, especially a friend, who have taken the initiative to examine the evidence and who then do believe. Notice the faces of the professional musicians in the orchestra. I thought it was interesting to see they were not laughing at this guy either. In fact, some of them looked uncomfortable with what he was saying. Just not my style of humor.

More than half the world's population do not believe Jesus performed any miracles, including rising from the dead, because no one has offered any evidence.

"“How can a person expect to find something, if s/he is not looking for it?" - Is this a genuine question? Or is it merely a paraphrase of, "How can you convince yourself of something if you're not leading the evidence while simultaneously discarding evidence in the contrary?" People of all religious flavours use this same methodology to arrive at the conclusion that the particular god they've been indoctrinated to believe is the "true" god, while all others are false. So if you've "found god," then ask yourself why didn't you find the god that you *weren't* raised to believe?

Yeah, strikes me too. That some apostles tried to convince us about some god that we know better of. if u cant see the logical fallacy its another lost case.

Half of what he said isn't how he works and a lot of christians have a poor understanding of God. In a nutshell: Science and religion go hand in hand, if it doesn't "obey" the strict rules of science, it's not going to happen, prayer can help in some ways, it can be healthy to talk about things to anything, with that many people asking to heal and believing, there's nothing to say that the eye didn't heal via a miracle, which is collective belief in something this is a thing that does happen. God is in another dimension, yes he is powerful, but this dimension even demons can hardly do anything, heck you can see how the world is going, Satan doesn't have to do a thing. God cannot interfere with the sick, if that is your path, God cannot interfere with the starving in Africa because that's a man made problem, he's not here to serve us, if your son was in trouble you would help him how you can, but you wouldn't bail them out, interfering with this is voiding the laws of science that are in place to keep things structured. Here's a poor example: Think of it as like you're doing math, and you cheat and look up the answer but don't show any working , and that answer needed the calculations shown in order to operate, that's you interfering with something and it breaks. God is loving yes, but he is also wrathful, and if someone makes a choice to not feed a country then that's on them, God has nothing to do with saving all of them. Can you imagine if he did? and miracles were the norm? We'd be relying on him for -everything- and then people would be complaining about why is God interfering, I want to do it this way! Hope that answers some questions, I won't pretend to know everything here, this is just from my personal journey of trying to find answers.

@@ebmusicman84 Evil is something we made to interpret right from wrong. In china you can get dog meat on the street, that in itself isn't inherently bad or good, despite it being a dog. It's that type of thinking you must wrap your head around, that's how you become enlightened, there's might be poor reception to God in this day and age, doesn't mean you should dismiss the idea of him not existing.
