It's a folk song, oral history- it gets passed on from person to person, and everyone remembers it differently and sings different versions. The oldest version that I know of seems to be about a trip to Canada, not the American southwest... but it's changed over the years. In some versions, the boss gets killed, and some the cowboys take the buffalo skins as payment. There are about a million different variations on the lyrics- just because one version of the song doesn't match the version you know, doesn't mean one is right and one is wrong. This one is just as valid as any other.

On Spotify Jim Kweskin Buffalo Skinners the best version of this song, better than Arlo and Woody's. Perfect tone and tells and sings this classic story. If your going to sing this song, at least get the right tone, and know the story, don't just make up your own lyrics, and call it Buffalo Skinners. Tim O' Brien just does not understand this classic cowboy song. When you hunted Buffalo the labors used bow and arrow, to prevent stampede, and they had to be in stealth mode, to avoid the natives.

Jim Kweskin is only singer, who gets that this song is about getting screwed on the Job. Tim O'Brien destroys this song, has the wrong tone. It maybe a cowboy song classic, but it's more! And I am clueless where he got his lyrics, Indians waited to pick us off. And they left Creekos bones to bleach. B/C He left the skinners wondering if they drank a extra cup of coffee or a extra scoopful of beans. Jim Kweskin version is the only way to sing this song, Even better than Arlo or Woody's.

might I also recommend lonesome ace stringboards "Hills of Mexico." It's not exactly buffalo, skinners, but similar.
