Tim Price: Transitioning From A Collapsing Currency

Tom welcomes Tim Price from Price Value Partners to the show. Tim argues that markets are completely irrational and central bankers are clueless. Bonds have become the enormous red-headed step-child of the markets. What happens with bonds affects every asset on the planet. Even the concept of interest rates at or below zero is completely extraordinary.

Ninety percent of those in finance today have no real understanding of what money is or its importance. The current money system doesn't share any of the key characteristics of sound money.
There are three possible ways out of the debt problem but politicians always choose the inflation route because that's where the political incentives align.
He is concerned about the possibility of a crack-up boom because that could result in messy high inflation. We had several major shocks in the 1970s which ended with all sorts of civil tensions, not unlike today.
The Repo market crisis of 20198 may have been far more serious than the Fed admitted.
He explains their approach to protecting wealth in this environment. One approach is utilizing trend following while looking for value. They try to balance their portfolio against risk.
Western economies are hyper financialized and most consider gold to be a product of a bygone era. People have lost touch with the source code of what is real money. Money today is an abstraction of an abstraction and gold is the one tangible form.
Crypto to an extent has grabbed the media limelight rather than gold.
It makes no sense to value gold in dollars if the dollar itself is not worth anything. There is no definition for the worth of a dollar. The gold rally will take off when gold finds new highs in every currency in the world.

The one thing that March 2020 has taught me is that when panic grips the market, EVERYTHING gets sold off. Stocks, regardless of whether the company is undervalued or overvalued, gets sold off. Precious metals also got sold off. Cash was King in the midst of the 2020 crash.

Great interview when you have to take notes! 🤔👍 Gold is insurance against a bad/debauched currency. The premium paid on the insurance is the fiat interest not received on holding that bad/debauched currency. At nominal interest rates near -0- % and real inflated rates near -15%, the insurance policy premium for holding gold is negative as well. Wealth Insurance! 😊👍

Oh, now I get it. The market has just been waiting for Tim's book to come out before it can crash! Jokes aside, even as an inexperienced investor myself, most things are just not making any sense in the market right now and can only be explained by human behaviour, which is volatile and in which extremes never last a lifetime. Eventually, there will have to be a major shift in market psychology and my best guess would be that's when gold and silver start moving. Tom, thank you for the work you do. Not many interviewers prepare as well as you do.

@@taylorcollins615 Hi Taylor, these days it takes me two days on my bicycle to reach the Swiss Alps. Used to be one day some 30 years ago. The scenery is breathtaking, every single time. One can combine the trip with a nice ferry ride. They do have a nice network of bike paths, though. Usually I ride there twice a year to this small independent never invaded (and never will be invaded) country). There are certain things one doesn't want to keep here in the Socialist Caliphate Alemanistan anymore as they may be confiscated one of these days. The voting public is already for confiscating rental apartmets and the EU is working on a registry of our wealth/possessions (How do you finance rising interest rates?). Our politics are leaning to the extreme left, more and more, unfortunately. Best,

To help bring all currencies more stability, would it be advisable to set the gold price at a level that is large enough to back those dollars and other currencies by 50% or more? Then the politicians and governments would have to have more discipline and everyone would or should have more confidence in the system. Just a thought.

Did you see what the FOIA revealed the other day, about the bailout back in 2010? What we were told by the end of that flop, was 5 Trillion, but instead of the 5 Trillion that we were told that it cost, it wound up being 29 Trillion, with close to 2 Trillion going to each of the large banks, some got more, but they didn't stop there, they gave out money to other contries central banks, Japan alone got 3.5 Trillion, but also Germany, Switzerland, China, UK, France, many others as well, and they fought like hell all the way to the Supreme Court, which took them all the way up to 2012, to cover that up for 10 years, but it ran out of time, so it was discovered in the FOIA, the ones investigating already knew, but couldn't bring it into the light until now, it should be on every news channel 24/7 but nothing at all has been mentioned. There should be no poor, no homeless, no starving children, the list goes on and on. The problem with private western central banks is that every time they get caught doing nefarious activities, they never change their behavior, they just change out players, and have always printed their way out of it, which goes against every moral concept. It's a slave contruct, that they have created and we are the serfs. It is fixing to come apart, and many will loose everything. Have you noticed going back in time that right before a financial situation, some sort of global infection comes into play, just about every 100 years going back down the line.

One thing that's often missing from these conversations is the role of the USD as the primary reserve currency. Over 60% of world reserves held in US dollars. I think there are several implications when talking about topics, such as how the EU and Japan were able to go to negative nominal rates. The Fed has a unique position as the world reserve currency. This has always been a huge advantage to the debtor nation US, but could eventually become a double-edged sword that takes out the US. Wish somebody smarter than me would take on this topic/angle.

@@Timothy_Pitt I think there are four main reasons: 1) Poland is bigger market so there is more competition in it, so a lot of stuff was cheaper there to begin with, 2) tax cuts in Poland (VAT on food, fuel, energy and essential items was reduced or set to 0 altogether for half a year), 3) Poland has its currency (PLN) which was not printed to oblivion like EUR and USD, but for some strange reason is still weak compared to my currency (EUR). In addition to that Bank of Poland is buying gold, it added about 200 tons in 2021. And finally 4) Poland has much better relations with China, Belarus (our neighbor) and Russia. Our government completely screwed relations with Belarus and China, so that might be one of reasons for inflation. And as a result protesters are requiring two things: retirement of the government (inflation, screwed foreign policy and relations, vax mandates, other political failures) and ending vax mandates. But they are smeared as pro-Russia and anti-vax.

Since it is bogus to value gold in dollars, what should it be valued in? A toga, belt, and sandals? I can value a small house today at 100 oz of gold. When the dollar becomes irrelevant, is that a valid valuation?
@life_of_riley88
@life_of_riley88 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. Gold is scarce and it is mined at about 2-3% more added per year. I'd say maybe 1 or 2 ounces will buy a house when the paper dollar finally dies. Remember the "Dollar" is 477+/- grains of fine silver. So, really in constitutional dollars, we don't know what a house costs? Only in Federal Reserve notes. Make sense?

these people are minimizing the potential for gold, in the face of a new gold standard, (literally on a gold bullion sales site) and advising you keep your money in the stock market. others will try to sell you silver or bitcoin. Trust yourself.

Gold relative to things we need, staples - there are some good charts that show the value of a barrel of oil, a cow etc v gold, over many decades, it's shocking and illuminating at the same time. The dollar has lost over 95% of its original value, which is why Tim likens the dollar to an elastic band, except that the dollar shrinks over a longer period of time, and may go to zero eventually, like all fiat currencies historically.

@warpathy6511 2 жыл бұрын
@@desertdog8006 because gold and silver specie are described in the Constitution as real money and silver is at the very tip of Exter’s pyramid. It is a mean reversion that reshuffles the banker’s power in money creation and gives the power over people’s wealth back to the people- until the bankers are green lighted to destroy public power once again. It always happens that way throughout history 🤷‍♂️.
