First we see Tim in the #27 being hounded by earnhardt's 3 at Bristol, then a little shtick by Tim......then the announcement of his death and some remembrance of an incredible talent. An athlete dying young. Had life treated him a little differently his talent would have been talked about today in the same breath as the best in the world. Who ran faster? Holberts 962 Porsche or Richmonds nascar Chevie? Listen to Rick Hendrick.
Oh yeah. Chip the hypocrite Williams shows up. Not surprising he was representing nascar.

I remember his phenomenal year in 1986 and coming back to get a couple of wins in 87. I also remember the debacle at Daytona the following year and thinking that something just wasn’t right. The next year, he was dead and when the cause was finally disclosed I understood. NASCAR really did him dirty
@scottwolf497
@scottwolf497 3 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I'm an old-school fan,too, and the first to rip the NASCAR sanctioning body, but they most certainly did not do him dirty. Tim was cleared to race again, but WOULD NOT turn over medical records from his stay in the Cleveland clinic. Wanna know why? Because he had AIDS. Not HIV, full-blown AIDS. NASCAR has a right to know if one of their drivers has a fatal disease. He ducked and dodged the "real issue" about his health the entire time at the 1988 Daytona speedweeks. Yes, NASCAR could have handled the whole thing better, no doubt, but it was Tim hiding the seriousness of his disease that is the issue here. They are not mind readers. If Tim was 100% honest with NASCAR from the beginning, none of this drama occurs as he would have been immediately prevented from racing in NASCAR, to say nothing of the fact that no car owner would put him in a ride sick as he was. A tragedy no matter how you look at it.

@@scottwolf497 the drug testing was dirty. The dr they used got fired over this. There was no illegal opiates or amphetamines just advil and Sudafed. But nascar held a press conference and said he was using pills and meth. That’s dirty, that’s why they got sued and had to pay Richmond’s estate. Then they completely erased him from nascar. Pretty dirty

@@stevenwalker9013 That's great. He already was HIV positive if not outright full blown AIDS. That's a tiny, little fact everybody chooses to ignore. If he releases his medical tests from his time in the Cleveland clinic all that other nonsense goes away because then his disease is exposed. He hid that he had AIDS. HE won two races as the disease slowly killed him.
@stevenwalker9013
@stevenwalker9013 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottwolf9275 I agree he hid the aids from nascar. It doesn’t change the fact they lied about his drug test. One guy that was involved with the testing testified nascar gave instructions to say he failed the test. Funny that’s all sealed and settled out of court. Both had fault.

That wasn’t the issue. The issue was Tim lied to everyone outside his doctor about why he was sick. NASCAR asked to see his medical records. When a judge ruled they had the right to see his records he settled. What if he’d come clean at the time?

They did not rig anything. He took two tests then they said “we need to see your medical records.” The idea they wouldn’t have let him race having AIDS was refuted by the universal suppprt for Magic Johnson barely three-four years later. If Tim has come clean chances are he could have gotten better treatment and there is no possibility he wouldn’t have been allowed to race. None.

Product of the time. AIDS had a very distinct public image at that time, and no one wanted to be anywhere near it. Today, if someone in NASCAR had AIDS and the root causes were sought out, the sanctioning body would be a lot more forgiving.

NASCAR was known for being very corrupt in the 80's. Mark Martin actually won a championship but was penalized for having the wrong screw in a carb and lost all points for a race he won. He lost the championship by less than 30 points. I believe it was either 87 or 89. Tim only came into his own in 87. It takes awhile to get acclamated in Cup. It took Hendrick several years to become a power. They were a low buck team for the first few years.

At this time in our culture if you would have known he had HIV he would have got no sympathy. Three ways you can contrac5 HIV none of them when you live like a moral individual. All three causes of this disease are self-inflicted. So you didn't dare tell anyone. He knew better. Rest in peace Tim Richmond I miss you NASCAR of that day and Society of that day in general

Stupid comment. Back in the day you could get it through a blood transfusion in the Hospital. How is that self inflicted. Back then blood wasn't tested like it is now. Ask the guy who was the actor who played the The Predator in 1987. He was in a car wreck. Had to get a blood transfusion. He got Aids from the transfusion and died in 1989. How's that self inflicted? I hate incompetent people.
