Wonder if they use, or could use, something like the first toy set up of magnets to detect earth quakes. Larger scale and would it be better.

An interesting idea, I'd imagine it'd be possible to detect vibrations in the ground by setting up something like a laser, and measuring small movements in the level of the laser, as for magnetism I'm not sure if it's precise enough though I could be wrong.

You would still need to measure the movement of the magnets. You can use laser interferometry to measure the movement of the ground more directly and to a far greater precision.
