I can see why Tim likes them, there's something so mesmerizing about the magnets. There's some instinctive desire to apply a sense of agency to all the things in those toys, even though you *know* it's just magnets and batteries.

I made something like the ball on the stick one as a kid and put some xylophone keys around the ball. I called it the Chaos Charms. (was a pencil with a strong magnet on the bottom on a string tied above the repelling magnet below it.)

I remember I saw the last magnetic toy in a shop in Italy around '94-'95. They had a lot of similar ones with structure and shape's variations, I spent a lot of time watching those. Time ago it was more interesting with RCs, miniature, modelling, artisans and other type of shops around. Now there are none, even the Game rooms disappeared since ages. Interned did its part but smart phone messed up everything pretty nicely, it was enough a generation or two of parents that gave that to small kids to ends it all.
