I’ve watched a lot of presidential campaigns, and I can’t remember one in which the contest for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination has played out quite so publicly. One breakthrough voice has been Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota. Before last week, he didn’t have much of a national profile. But then he went on “Morning Joe” and said of Donald Trump and JD Vance, “These guys are just weird.”
That one line has transformed the Democratic Party’s messaging, with everyone from Vice President Kamala Harris to Senator Joe Manchin using similar language.
But it’s the kind of criticism that risks coming off as condescending to those who support Trump and Vance, similar to Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables” comment in 2016. But what has stood out to me about Walz’s political ethos is his confidence in speaking on behalf of everyday Americans - a confidence his track record backs up. Walz comes from a very small town and repeatedly won House races in a district that heavily favored Trump.
So I invited him on the show to talk about how he walks this line between attacking Republican politicians without alienating Republican voters and how he thinks Democrats can control the narrative of this election and start winning some of those voters back.

I’m a MN public school teacher. I can’t emphasize enough how much universal breakfast/lunch is a slam-dunk policy that has multiple benefits while ensuring kids are fed. I’ve had many middle-class parents tell me how much free breakfast/lunch has helped their budgets. Also, my district has been renovating all the cafeterias to have commercial kitchens (started way prior to the legislation), so all of our meals are made in-house, and many of those meals are directly sourced from local farms, meaning farmers are also getting a cut of those state funds. I’m constantly sending pictures to my non-teacher friends of my school lunches because they are so good.

We need to replicate this nationwide. Kids cannot learn when they are hungry. Taught in K-12 for 3O + years. Everyone should have decent meals at school. Stigmatizing kids who are on "free lunch" is wrong.

As a special education teacher in a public school i LOVE how Tim Walz talks about schools. The students i serve don't have the luxury of private school or homeschool. Their needs are too great and their parents are too overwhelmed to have the option of having their kids educated in any other way. Public schools aren't perfect but the fact that any student, regardless of race, gender, religion or disability has the OPPORTUNITY to gain an education is the most powerful equalizer in the history of humanity. I am so glad Harris picked a VP who understands the power of a public education.

“He-man women haters” Honestly, that perfectly resonates. As a woman, I’m intimidated by the chest beating, get a truck w big wheels, brandish your gun everywhere, license to be a jerk movement. It’s not attractive. It aligns more w possibly abusive. I don’t see that as manly. My husband is the epitome of manliness to me & does none of that. He’s a leader, business owner, father, he happens to be strong physically & mentally, & he’s quiet about his strength. He rarely raises his voice, keeps his calm, doesn’t need to show bravado to feel manly. It exudes from inside. Those men need to step forward as role models for the young generation being distracted by these loud alpha male types.

This reminds me of when I had an argument with my girlfriend’s youngest brother, a kid of about 17 who had developed a fascination with Andrew Tate and was going around treating girls his age like crap, which I was not happy with. When we argued he called me a "castrated half-woman who hates men", which made me burst into laughter. I am like 6’3" (about a foot taller than this kid), very hairy and both look like and dress the part of a Canadian lumberjack because I work as a researcher out on the frontier most of the year. Being called feminine was so bizarre. These "alpha male" types aren’t teaching anyone to be good men, just massive a-holes. I’ve been to some truly remote places, way out of cell range or any reasonable expectation of rescue, and out there you have no time for this stupid culture war bull or false masculinity crap. I’ve shimmied along cliff faces with women, and crossed the top of waterfalls tightrope with gay men. I’d take anyone of them with me into a situation, whether dangerous or everyday, than one of these alpha male types. A good man works hard for and stands up for his family and community, and that’s all there’s to it. Having money, fame and lovers is just window dressing, even the poorest and loneliest man can still live a fulfilled life and be a good masculine role model. And same for women, for that matter, this obsession with beauty, youth and sexuality we push on young girls is no more healthy, when you can be a good woman without any of those things, or have those and still be bad.

I admired Walz's leadership through covid and the BLM protests in 2020. He seemed authentic, down-to-earth, and like someone who genuinely wants the best for everyone in the state he governs. Hold my beer - Tim Walz Financial Disclosure . Tim released financial disclosures between 2008 and 2017 when he was serving in the US house of Representatives. Over the years his net worth estimate was as high as $250,000 (2010) and as low as $13,500 (2017). According to a financial disclosure his 2017, out of 435 members of the House of Representatives, he ranked as the 365th richest. Tim's disclosure reported assets worth between $200,000 and $500,000. His asset values were canceled out by liabilities valued exactly the same range. His primary asset AND liability was a home in the city of Mankato, Minnesota which is worth around $250,000 and has two mortgages. He also owns a modest two-bedroom rental property in Mankato, a stake in a family farm worth $15,000 to $50,000, some mutual funds and pensions thanks both his military and teaching careers. Salary & Treasury Donation The Governor of Minnesota earns an annual salary of $127,629. Tim's wife Gwen makes around $59,000 per year working for Mankato Area Public Schools. During his time as a member of congress, Tim was entitled to an annual salary of $174,000, an increase from $149,690 that was allowed after congress granted itself various cost of living wage increases. Tim refused to accept the cost of living wage increases, seeing them as hypocritical. He literally returned the differences to the US Treasury. During his time in Congress, which began in early 2007 and ended in late 2017, Tim returned $81,684 to the US Treasury. According to a letter that was made public, the US Treasury informed Walz: "To date you have returned funds to the U.S. Treasury reducing the national debt by the amount of $81,684.00."
